Title: Its all about ... Vista
Post by: AndreL on January 04, 2007, 11:25:43 AM
I know Vista 25 Days 12 Hours

What I want to know is when it comes out will it be on back order when it comes for instance, when the stores start selling it (and people go wild) trying to get it will they sell out like that (snaping fingers quickly). Or how about where to get, it, will it be only online for the first few weeks and then come out to stores like Best Buy and Circuit City. I just don't want it to do a Sony PS3 or NintendoWii thing.

So post your views of what gonna happend.

What version are you wanting to get?  Will it be the full version or upgrade?  Plan on getting Office 2007 too?  There might be a cheaper alternative.

Is Vista free? All you do is download it in updates? Or do you have to pay for it?

There are a couple of things to remember about upgrading to Vista possibly the most important one being that hardware needs to be up to date to use all the new features - imagine my shock with a 4 month old video card not being able to run the "aero glass" desktop in vista RC1.  Also as soon as it hits the streets there are going to be people writing viruses etc for it (if they havent started already) and there is wailing and gnashing of teeth from 3rd party AV companies about how their programmes are going to integrate with vista.
Also although Microsoft claim 512MB of ram and a P3 (800?Mhz) processor will work fine, I am sure they are talking about Home Basic edition as with a overclocked 3.0 and 1 gig ram it is proving to be a resource hog with all the Vista Ultimate features turned on.
Having said that I do find it is a worthwhile upgrade and am waiting to be able to get a version running that wont expire in July

you can get anything for free, you just have to know how to get it... /rolleyes.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />  /ph34r.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

Yeah, just like that 07 Mercedes you've been looking at, it's free if you know how to get it.

I don't know of any way to get it free legally, but I do know some ways to get it cheaper.  Depends on your situation.  BTW, mine was purchased directly from Microsoft.  Not one of those shady sites that sell back-up software.  Completely legit.

I suggest waiting a year to get vista because if you get it now it will be filled with bugs and all that good stuff

if you want it now you can get it free if you subscribe to MSDN (http://\"http://msdn.microsoft.com\")

yeah, i agree with everlasting...wait about a year...or if you just wanna test it, put it on a test PC...keep XP on ur good comp until its been confirmed to work perfectly...

also, ive heard rumors that Vista makes it easier to have dual OS's, some1 said it has an option in the "tun off computer" screen that would switch it...cuz right now i got problems when i run XP and Linux on the same comp...can anyone confirm an upgrade in this area?

not opnly will vista not have that option but it will also block data between them making it difficult to share data between the linux and windows vista partitions..can be done however but not out of the box

a small insite on one persons findings... http://linux.slashdot.org/linux/06/04/27/2219258.shtml (http://\"http://linux.slashdot.org/linux/06/04/27/2219258.shtml\")

I havent had a problem dual booting vista - running XP on one disk and Vista on second hard disk seems to work well, so I cant see why partioning a drive wouldnt work the same way with Linux as well. At boot presents usual type of screen for what you want to boot to and just select it, however it does make Vista the default option

The only way you get free (legit anyway) is if you bought a PC with XP between Oct-06 and Mar-07 IIRC.  And... I really don't know if they give you a version for version upgrade or just a Vista upgrade which is supposedly missing many of the neat features.

I never did try the beta... most of my stuff runs W2K, except for one machine that has XPPro on it.  I think the advice that it'll be targeted for worms and viruses would keep me away for a year.

Apparently easy to dual boot vista and linux if you install vista first, or set linux partitions to inactive. See www.apcmag.com/dualboot for more info
