Well, I like my Dell laptop. My Compaq laptop has had numerous issues, but it still works. It's now a toy for my 7 month old son.
As far as desktop computers, I have an emachines handling all our phone calls (runs linux and asterisk). Other than that, all my PCs and servers are custom built.
My very first computer was an HP, long before the HP/Compaq merger. I think it's still chugging along, it's something like a 233MHz, not sure who has it now.
Anyways, if I had to buy a pre-built, it'd probably be Dell, HP/Compaq, then Emachines/Gateway, in that order. Man, there used to be so much choice...not so much anymore.

HP is good, Toshiba you get more for the money though, so I like both HP and Toshiba.

I would say :
DELL for PC
TOSIBA for NoteBook
-
hp

if your gonna get a prebuilt i soy completely dell. rather laptop or desktop.... dell. BUT, i wouldnt prefer a prebuilt one anywayz. custom ones... if you choose them to be can be alot faster and are lots of fun to put together =D

it depends on what u want it for...i had 2 comps for the longest time, but i just sold my custom comp for $4000 last year cuz im getting ready to buy my first car...now im working with a pre-built dell laptop (piece of sh1t, just sent it in to dell because my CCFL backlight burned out)
if ur worried about price, then go for a prebuilt, in my opinion HP is the best, followed by IBM...dell is last ftw
if price isnt a factor...then go custom
i built mine completely off eBay...bought everything seperate from all over the place...bought a case with LED's all over the place with a see through side and an easy access interior...video card alone cost me over $700 (Dual NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX SLI with 2 768MB GDDR3 video memory...da shizznit baby!!! got it off a guy that collected alienware comps for parts)...my only problem was that most of the stuff i bought wasnt all that compatible with other stuff and kinda made things a little messed up...so i ended up buying and sellign different things b4 i got the right stuff...had 4gigs of memory and 4 DIFFERENT HARDDRIVES!!! that my friend at fry's help me jackup together into 1 single harddrive (took 4 external 120gig HD's and took em apart and made it into what looked like a single internal HD (liquid cooling ftw)...total 480gig...i miss my old comp now...motherboard i got brand new from an IBM store on eBay...i got stuff from all over the place...i even added a special touch by changing the floppy drive into an ipod hookup that i stole from my friends car...
overall it cost me about 5k to finish it off...and i sold it for 4k

Id have a Dell because you choose the parts and they put it together for you, but I have my computers custom built
