Scammers don't even have to register which makes the truly legit people vunerable to scamming. I think if josetann set it so that only registered members can view the forums then outsiders can't browse for msn names to contact you and fake as Elites. And people who have scammed allanon would be able to look up their ip and see which scammers have registered multiple accounts

It's a suggestion, pertaining to RuneScape, in the RuneScape/Suggestions forum. I think it most definitely does NOT qualify as spam.
Now, to address the topic:
This wouldn't work like you think for two reasons.
#1. If guests can't see the forums, then pretty soon no one will come here. You may not see a drastic decline at first, but give it a few weeks, then months, and post count will drop dramatically. Most of the people that find this place do so through Google. Even if one of your friends told you about this site, they probably found it through Google, or whoever told them originally found it through Google. Private forums can't be seen by search engines. The RuneScape section would die a slow death.
#2. All someone would have to do is sign up for an account, then they'd see the RuneScape forums. They don't have to post or say anything at all in order to see someone's MSN info and try to make a similar looking MSN screen name (which is what you're saying is the problem). So, we've just made these particular scammers spend an extra 3-5 minutes...about how long it'd take to make an MSN screen name...it's not going to stop them.
An alternative would be to not make your MSN (or whatever IM client you use) screen name publicly viewable. Make someone PM you to get it. Now, if a scammer is targeting you it won't delay them much (have to register, then have to PM which would take all of a minute, but they'd have to wait for your reply, and if they seem fishy then don't give out your info), but they'd have to do this for every MSN screen name they want to take a look at, which can add up.
Perhaps a better suggestion would be to re-enable the chat feature we used to have.

I see your point and thanks for atleast looking man. But my point is if someone scams you over msn you can grab their ip and give it to allanon to give to you
/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' /> that away you can look up which registered account it belongs too. and they would be ip and not able to view the forums.
You made a good point about posts declining I never thought about that but atleast just the for/sale wanted should be locked for members only but not the whole runescape section.

I voted no joseph is right.
And if allanon Did I.P ban them (which he can't only admins can) all they do is have to go to a proxy site if there not already.
