Operating system?
Make and model of Mic?

Any problems in Device manager?
It sounds as if your sound drivers are not stalled properly or corrupt

Sounds, like when you were hooking it up you might of unplugged, your speakers, plugging your mic in,
Try unplugging, and plugging back in the speaks, and on the back of the speakers, unplugg the wire, and pulg it back in,
also if you have any dust try to clean it.

Actually, first check what Scott suggested, I've seen others plug into wrong port and have things go wrong
Look at the color in the back of the port you plug into
It should be a light red color
