Title: Bad e-mail, I think I'm infected
Post by: Heather on July 04, 2007, 12:18:19 AM
I recieved an e-mail today saying there was a 4th of July e-card waiting for me and I didn't recognize the address but one of the words made me think it might be an update about a dog I rescued a while back.
I clicked on the link and there was an empty page. I got really suspicious and tried to close the page but it wouldn't close so I hard booted to get rid of it. nothing else was working. since then I am having problems with logging onto windows when puter goes to dormant, and the internet explorer icon likes to disappear among other weird things. log to follow, thanks for any help you may be able to offer.

AV probably hasn't updated to this virus yet, probably fairly new

If you have a copy of combofix, please delete it

Download this file - Combofix.exe (http://\"http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe\") and save it ONLY to your desktop
Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Post the log from combofix
Let's see if it unveils anything

I may not see it tonight, as I'm off to bed soon, but I'll take a look tomorrow

I'm not seeing nothing running in your processes that looks suspicious
Are you getting notifications or warnings from either SpySweeper or Active Virus shield?

I would ensure both are updated
Reboot into safe mode and run a complete system scan with both

Reboot back to normal windows and see how things are running
Let me know how it goes

ok did the scans in safe mode, AVS is current, spysweep is a tad outdated but I cannot re-purchase for a couple more weeks.
getting harder to stay functional, pc is not recognizing keyboard much of the time and I have to keep re-booting.
AVS does have one repetative alert

If SpySweeper is outdated, you may want to uninstall it for now, this way it won't interfere with any fixes we try

Can I have you run a couple scans for me

Post by: guestolo on July 06, 2007, 07:21:45 PM
Could you run another scanner for me please Heather
This won't take near as long as Dr.Web, I want to check for a hidden service that catchme may have not found

Download and save too your desktop
fsbl.exe (http://\"https://europe.f-secure.com/exclude/blacklight/fsbl.exe\")
(F-Secure Blacklight)

Double click to run fsbl.exe
    * Accept the user agreement.
    * Click Scan.
    * After the scan finishes, click on Next, then Exit.
Do not rename any files if found by blacklight, I need to see the log

BlackLight will create a log on your desktop with the name "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log".
Can you post the contents of that log please

still getting the suspected trojan alert through AVS.
I do remember getting the e-bay fake e-mail and my AV kicking it out but like I said earlier, I didn't notice any problems till the 4th of July thing came through. wonder if the one activated the other or if it's just coincidence.
awaiting further instructions.
many thanks, Heather

Let's try another route

Can you do the following
Print the rest of these instructions or save them too a text file on desktop

Download SDFix (http://\"http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe\") and save this to your desktop
We will need it in a bit

Download ATF-Cleaner (http://\"http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1\") by Atribune.
Save it to your desktop
We'll need this later

I need you to boot to safe mode, but first please Shut down the computer
After you have shut down,
Physically disconnect the Network cable from your modem to the back of the computer
Leave this disconnected until instructed please

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :In safe mode
============================================
==Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
      Under Main choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser

Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
==================================================

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)
Go to START>>My Computer>>Double click to open the C:\ folder I'll need to see that report later

Do the next step:
Go to START>>RUN>>Type in
cmd
Then hit OK

In the command prompt type the following exactly, include the space between the (g and /)
ipconfig /flushdns
Then hit ENTER on your keyboard
Exit

Open AVS(Active Virus Shield)
Under the main Window under Summary
Take note of the date of Signatures released
Then click the "ALL Protection Services Running "
Under the "Quarantine" tab, do you see the following
suspected trojan
Quote
File [From:"Ebay"<[email protected]>][subject:TKO NOTICE:suspicious activity.][Time:2007/06/25 07:00:36]\text/html:
If so, left click to Highlight it and then Delete it

Shut down your computer
Reconnect your network cable

Boot back up to normal Windows

Come back here and post a fresh hijackthis log
Let's make sure it still looks good, however the last one did

Also, Post the report from SDFix
and let me know the date of AVS signatures released please

I was unsure wether the first reboot was to be in safe mode or regular mode. Since you made no distinction I re-booted in regular mode. If I need to run it again just say the word. otherwise report below

signatures released 7/7/2007 1:57:59 am.
there was nothing under the quarantine tab
I will post HJT log in next post
thank you, Heather

Title: Bad e-mail, I think I'm infected
Post by: guestolo on July 07, 2007, 08:15:00 AM
I'm not seeing anything suspicious
If your email client is OE
Delete any mail from Inbox you don't recognize
Also, empty the contents of the Delete and Sent folders you don't need anymore

Everything else appears normal?

Can you also do the following
Save Silent Runners.vbs (http://\"http://silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.vbs\") to your desktop
Right click on that link and choose Save Link As
Double click on it to run.
If prompted by your AV, please let this script run, we are just collecting information

This will create a text file on your desktop
Open the text file and copy and paste the contents back here

NOTE: let silentrunners completely finish, it WILL prompt when it is done

I still see remnants of Norton's (Symantec's) in your logs
Did you totally uninstall the whole program?

EDIT>>
I don't know what you mean by this
Quote
I was unsure wether the first reboot was to be in safe mode or regular mode. Since you made no distinction I re-booted in regular mode. If I need to run it again just say the word. otherwise report below

Are you talking about where I ask you to be in Safe mode to run ATF-Cleaner and SDFix????
Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)
Go to START>>My Computer>>Double click to open the C:\ folder http://www.silentrunners.org/ (http://\"http://www.silentrunners.org/\")

Title: Bad e-mail, I think I'm infected
Post by: Heather on July 07, 2007, 08:13:15 PM
ok, I spoke too soon.
I just attempted to go on and check mail after about 2 hours dormant,
first the sign in was a box that sais computer locked, I've seen this type of sign in but it's not how I have mine set. I signed in and clicked on OE, OE icon disappeared and this alert came up

outlook express could not be started because MSOERES.DLL could not be found

then this popped up

explorer exe-Application error
Application failed to initialize properly (0xc000012d). click on ok to terminate the application

I clicked ok, nothing happened.
on the taskbar there were several firewall shields when I hovered over them they went black and then disappeared
then everything I hovered over on the taskbar disappeared.
I tried to take a screenshot and open paint, the icon disappeared.
I clicked start to see if I could reboot, all icons disappeared including entire taskbar.

hardboot and here I am.
boy this is annoying. (the issues not the process)

I'm not sure what version of Norton's you had
But ensure to run the uninstaller they have posted

Only do Step 2 of the procedure
Click Here (http://\"http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039\")

Be sure to follow the exact instructions
Quote
1
Download the Norton Removal Tool for your version of Windows.
        * I use Windows Vista/XP/2000. DOWNLOAD
        * I use Windows Me/98. DOWNLOAD
Save the file to the Windows desktop.
2
On the Windows desktop, double-click the Norton Removal tool icon.
3
    Follow the on-screen instructions.
Your computer may be restarted more than once, and you may be asked to repeat some steps after the computer restarts.

Back in Windows
Have your XP CD ready
Go to START>>RUN>>type in
sfc /scannow
Let this scan finish and insert your CD if prompted

Reboot afterwards

Post back and let me know how things are running

ok, did all that you asked and I am still having problems
intrusion alerts like crazy. really goofy behavior upon logon after sitting in sleep for any amount of time.
my desktop continues to change, from the logon screen to icons disappearing to black spots and freezing up is becoming the norm where a week ago it never happened.
sure wish we could identify this one. I'm with you, I think it's just so new it may not have an antidote yet.
I'll sure hang in and do whatever you suggest as long as you are willing.

None of the scans are finding anything however

Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad)
Hit OK
Copy the contents of the CODE box, not including the word "code"
Paste it to the empty Notepad file
In Notepad click FILE>>SAVE AS
IMPORTANT>>>Change the Save as Type to All Files.
Name the file as fix.reg

Save this file on the desktop
Ensure to copy from REGEDIT4 and down in the code box

Code: [Select]
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager]
"BootExecute"=hex(7):61,00,75,00,74,00,6f,00,63,00,68,00,65,00,63,00,6b,00,20,\
  00,61,00,75,00,74,00,6f,00,63,00,68,00,6b,00,20,00,2a,00,00,00,00,00

Double click on fix.reg and allow to add/merge to the registry at the prompt

Back in Windows

Delete the log from silentrunners.vbs
Run it again and post it's new log

intrusion alerts like crazy
Does Kerio give any indication of the intruders?
Any folder/filename?
Is it inbound or outbound traffic

You may have to uninstall Kerio and then reinstall>>Reinstall in Simple mode

Kerio does give info, I will get a screenshot for you on the next alert and post it. shouldn't take long. /dry.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'<_<\' />
I'll try the un-re-install as well.

Did you uninstall SpySweeper as I asked earlier?

That registry import I had you do didn't work
Can you do the following

Go to START>>RUN>>type in
regedit
Hit OK

Navigate to the following key, ensure you do everything exactly as posted
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager

So do the following
Expand (+) on each of the following
+ HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
+SYSTEM
+CurrentControlSet
+Control

Look for Session Manager on the left hand side
Left click to Highlight it
On the RIGHT hand side look for BootExecute
Right click on BootExecute and select Modify
You should see Value Name>>BootExecute
and you should some text also see under Value data:

In the white box, I need you to modify it to read EXACTLY as posted in bold below, include the asterik
You can delete everything in the white box and copy>>Paste the bold below to it

autocheck autochk *

After that is entered select OK and you can exit the registry editor

If you have not uninstalled SpySweeper yet, do so now
Also, I would like to update Ewido
Can you uninstall Ewido Anti-Malware from add/remove

Reboot the computer

Back in Windows
==Download AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 (http://\"http://www.ewido.net/en/download/\")An AVG icon will be placed in your system tray next to your clock, can you right on it and uncheck
"Resident Shield" , "Automatic updates" and "Start with Windows"
Come back here and post a fresh hijackthis log along with the report from AVG Anti-spyware

Title: Bad e-mail, I think I'm infected
Post by: guestolo on July 09, 2007, 07:07:02 PM
Can you do the following, access your add/remove programs and remove the following
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2

It is way out of date and malware can use it to infect your system
Don't reboot yet after you remove it

Also, I would suggest that you remove
Viewpoint Media Player
It usually get's unknowing installed

Reboot your computer afterwards
Back in Windows
run the installer from desktop
You can delete the installer after successfully installed

Do you know what version of SpySweeper you had installed, it didn't uninstall totally and could be giving you problems
I would think that installing the newest trial version and uninstalling may help
I would try that route, ensure to reboot afterwards

Also, can you do the following, I want to check on something

Navigate to Hijackthis.exe in this folder
C:\Program Files\HijackThis

RIGHT click on Hijackthis.exe and rename it too Heather.exe
Do another fresh scan with Heather.exe(Hijackthis) and  post it's fresh log

I'm working on those things above however a couple of new things.
Kerio will not start at all, I've tried rebooting and running it as many ways as I know how.
2nd thing, my browser bar os rolling away when my moise is not on it, when I hover on it it comes back and my task bar is gone but the windows button on the keyboard will bring it up. This only seems to happen when I am on the first page but when I open a second IE page it is normal.
will post again when I finish with all instructions.

One note: I'm not sure what this is related too in the uninstall list from Hijackthis
WIRELESS
Do you know what it's related too?

Are you on wireless broadband connection or direct connection?
Do you have wireless mouse or keyboard?

Can you do me a favor
Open hijackthis>>Misc tools section>>Uninstall manager
Hightlight Wireless on the left hand side
Can you copy>>paste back here the uninstall command on the right hand side
I'm not familiar with this entry, let's ensure it's not ISP related

Also, I need you to do this exactly
Navigate to this file
C:\Program Files\Heather.exe\HijackThis.exe

I didn't want you to rename the folder that hijackthis is in
I want you to rename Hijackthis.exe to Heather.exe then post a fresh log

I'm posting this first as I think it may be helpful to us, I was looking online for any virus alert info and found this site
http://www.techworld.com/security/news/ind...amp;pagtype=all (http://\"http://www.techworld.com/security/news/index.cfm?newsID=9370&pagtype=all\")
it tells that my lovely 4th of july e-card is the storm trojan in disguise.
shall I continue with the latest set of instructions or do you want me to do something else?
thanks, H

DOH!!! /rolleyes.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />
I wonder about myself sometimes. Thank you for your patience with me.
I reinstalled and uninstalled the spysweep as instructed

the sunbelt is not giving intrusion alerts since I brought it up, (my car never acts up in front of the mechanic either)
interesting thing, when the spysweep was in, the Kerio started right up, now that it's gone Kerio won't load again.

Title: Bad e-mail, I think I'm infected
Post by: guestolo on July 10, 2007, 07:06:38 PM
I didn't think renaming Hijackthis would produce anything, but I wanted to double check

I don't like using registry cleaners, but in your case I think we should
It appears that SpySweeper uninstall properly, that's good

Can you do the following
Can you once again uninstall Kerio firewall
Reboot the computer

Back in Windows ensure that the XP firewall is enabled

Create a new system restore point
Go to START>>All Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>System Restore
Create a New restore point
Give it a name>>(Any name)  and click Create
Let it prompt that restore point was successfully create
Exit

You have CCleaner installed
Open CCleaner
Next: click Options click the Advanced button
Uncheck: "Only delete files in Windows temp folders older than 48 hrs."
NEXT: Click the Cleaner
Then click Run Cleaner (bottom right)
OK the prompt>>Let it finish it scan

Afterwards click the Issues button>>Then click Scan for Issues
Let it finish it's scan, ensure all entries are checked
Click Fix Selected Issues
At the prompt to create backup select Yes
and Save the backup in a spot you will remember, by default it should save to My Documents
That will do
Click Save
Click Fix All Selected Issues>>OK>>>Close
Let it finish cleaning and exit CCleaner

Reboot the computer and come back here and post one last hijackthis log
See if things are running better

I don't know if this makes any difference but we did a restore point back in June, will this new restore point void that one or would going back to that one help fix this? it was before the problems started.
also were you able to check on that storm trojan?
I'll go do the firewall fix and wait on the rest for your reply.
thanks, H

Umm, I'm not sure how to reply to this

Are you planning on restoring to that point?
If you are, I advise to uninstall any programs you installed after that point
You will probably have to reinstall them anyways as they will not work properly

This is your choice, you could try the restore point if you want, as of now I don't see problems
But we may have to clean again as you may restore to an infected restore point
This is your options

I was only going to restore to that point if you thought it best.

I don't know exactly how all this works and I assumed that creating a restore point means that you can back the computer up to a point where there were no problems (or fewer problems) and consequently creating a restore point when there are problems would then cause you to restore to a bad time should you choose that point sometime in the future? like I said, I don't claim to have an understanding of it.
I just wanted to make sure you knew that we created a restore point in June before I had issues. I had come in and had you check to see if I was running ok and then not 2 weeks later I got that goofy e-mail.

I don't want to do anything other than what you advise as I do trust your judgement.
I'll be out of town till saturday so I'll post back then
thanks, H

I would like you to try the instructions in Post #34
Then post back the results
We will still have that restore point you made earlier if needed

so sorry for the delay, things have been insane around here lately.

things are better but there is still something going on, my icon's like to travel on me, going dormant is still giving me problems, sometimes an alert window will pop up but it is distorted or empty, IE is still a bit goofy.

just little things but they all add up to the fact that I'm still not where I was before that blasted e-mail.

There is too much of delay in response times
I will need to see new logs please

But first, can you do the following
I need you to update Hijackthis
Download Hijackthis 2.0.2 from my signature below
SAVE it to your desktop

Double click on HJTInstall.exe to run it
Choose Install

Hijackthis v2.0.2 will open

Under Main Menu, Select

Title: Bad e-mail, I think I'm infected
Post by: Heather on September 14, 2007, 03:01:36 AM
Please forgive the extensive delay, tonight I attempted to restore to a point previous to the origonal issue and things were immediately faster however the AVS would not start up and I was having problems with a couple of other programs. I attempted to un-re-install AVS and upon re-install was instructed to disable firewall to complete installation. I tried to disable firewall, and recieved this "Due to an unidentified problem, Windows cannot display Windows firewall settings"
I then tried to uninstall Kerio so as to load AVS and install a new firewall, recieved this

clicked ok and got this
and this

I tried to download latest version from kerio and recieved same results yet my system is saying I am running Kerio.

posting HJT and Combo in following post.

I appreciate any time you can give.
thank you, Heather
