Since im a late person to hardware news im sure you\'ve heard of the Balistic Magnetoresistance device developed in New York State college. Anyhow how long, being that they have successfully got the density to 1500x, will it take to trickle down to us, or will it?
I was thinking, wait to clear it up if you don\'t know what that device does is take 1gig and turn it into 1,500 gigs (1.5 Terabyts). Anyways I was thinking this ok...if you can follow me here. They know it works at 1500x, there trying and you know they will get it to work at there project 3000x, they could probably go higher too. Now with this in mind wtf could they sell that for being if you read the production cost\'s it could easily...easily be sold for 300 USD. Now that would totaly kill the HDD market of today right? Well if all the current companies like WD, Seagate, Maxtor, IBM, etc... got a patent it would EXPLODE ALL OVER THE WORLD...but if they don\'t?
To sum up if the current manufacture\'s of this technology can\'t license/buy it then we will never see it. Also when a college invent\'s something you know it takes forever to get the motion in the ocean...not to mention who does the technology really belong to in this case (The students with there protected intellecutal laws?, the college for supply materials?, the public for funding the college? etc...)
To sum up...the greatest thing in the world of permanent storage might pass us right by in fear of killing the current market. Will it? Could it? Well if you look into history about all the things, not even IT related (i.e. AUTOMOBLIE INDUSTRY is one and probably the biggest to kill advancement\'s), you will see how much has gone by in fear of universal profit loss.
