Title: Dell InspironB130 Factory restore! HELP URGENT
Post by: collegestudent on July 28, 2007, 08:52:45 AM
Today I tried to reistinall windowsXP to clear everything off of my laptop for the upcoming college semester.
I have a Dell Inspiron B130. During the installation it said some things could not be installed. After all was complete I noticed that in my start menu, the option: Connections(to connect wirlessly or using a local connection) was not there. Also, there was only the recycle bin icon on my desktop. My latop has  a built in wireless system. I called Dell and they said something about installing drivers. I have no idea how to do that.
I need extreme help. With step by step instructions that will help me regain the essential components my laptop came with. Security(mine came with mcafee), start menu options and programs, just everything. My stomach is in nots. Can someone give me instructions so I can start from the beginning and end up with everything installed. I do  have  a Dell/Windows XP service Pack 2 CD.

If possible: Is there something I can do with the CD now to regain what was lost without starting over?

PLEASE HELP ANYONE! /ohmy.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':o\' />

Do you still have the drivers and software disc supplied by Dell?
If not
Check out this link
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/...tid=&impid= (http://\"http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=INSPIRON1300/B130&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=\")

You don't need all the drivers and updates, only ones that match your hardware installed
To help match hardware components download a tool such as SIW.exe
From HERE (http://\"http://www.download3k.com/DownloadLink1-SIW.html\")

As far as McAfee, it would only be trial anyways, we can get you a more permanent solution for free

Thank you so much for the assistance. It's all taken care of now. However, I have another problem that should be a lot easier to fix. Whenever I turn on my computer I get to a screen that says choose operating system. Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Setup. If I click the setup it will say could not start properly please reinstall <windows root>\system32\hal.dll. I went online and searched that and I was told at many websites including the microsoft one to boot the XP service pack CD at startup(which I did.) I got to the recovery console and got to the part where I have to enter: bootcfg/list and then press enter. Whenever I do that it says command not recognized. I'm not sure what is going on? I want to reinstall that and just have windows start normally without asking me to choose an operating system. Thanks again!

I'm a bit confused at what your doing
bootcfg/list should read bootcfg /list
Notice the space after the "g"
When you boot up can you choose
Windows XP Home Edition?

OK, I'll post my responses here. Sorry.

I'll try bootcfg /list

Yes I can choose Windows XP Home Edition. But, isn't there a way for it to just load up without asking? I'm going to try the recovery console again. Thanks for all your help.
