My Windows XP system has two administrator type accounts. One for me and one for my wife. Mine has no problems - that I know of. But my wife's is obviously not working well. She can't print her emails from Outlook Express and she cannot print from IE. When she does she gets a dialog box that opens up and says:
Internet Explorer Script Error
An error has occurred in the script on this page
Line:
Char:
Error:
Code:
URL:
Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?
Yes/No
No information is given line, char, error, code, or URL.
I just tried creating a new account - from things I read on the Internet I came to believe her registry was corrupt - but it is experiencing similar problems. On a brand new administrator account that I just created, the first time I start IE, IE7 that is, it got the same problem.
When this happens, you seem to have to start Task Manager and kill the task. You can click either the yes or no buttons under the "Do you want to continue ..." question and it has no affect.
Your help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Dale
Note - the hijack this log file below was created from my ID, the one that works. Not my wifes, the one with issues, nor the new one I created and subsequently deleted since it had the same issues.

Not seeing much wrong
I don't see any AntiVirus software installed, how come?
Don't run out and purchase one, I'm just enquiring
Can you sign into the wifes account
Run Hijackthis, save the log to your C:\ folder
Reboot back into your account than paste it back here
Also, can you do the following
supply an uninstall list from Hijackthis
Open Hijackthis>>Open MISC TOOLS SECTION>>Open UNINSTALL MANAGER
Click the SAVE LIST... button
Save the list to your desktop then copy>>Paste back here the Whole contents

No good reason for not having AntiVirus software installed. In fact, AT&T has a suite I could download and install as part of my DSL package. I just don't like the CPU cycles virus software take and I'm very very careful when it comes to opening attachments and going to strange web sites so I don't think I need it. After running in to this problem, and thinking that it may be virus related, I may need to rethink my stance against antivirus software.
Anyway, I got the hijack this log from my wifes account and I got the uninstall list from my account. If I need to get the uninstall list from her account just let me know.
Also, I do know of one issue with my account. Windows update. It doesn't. Unless I run through a series of steps I found in some post on the internet, which I'll tell what they are in a moment. When I run update I always get an error in the browser that says "The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem." That's what I get when I manually try to do an update. The automatic update stopped working months ago.
To get the update to work one time I follow all of the following "suggestions":
==================================================================
Suggestion 1: Re-register the relevant XML components.
This issue can occur when the XML component is not working properly. Let's
refer to the following steps to get this issue resolved:
1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter.
2. In the opened window, run the following command:
regsvr32 Msxml3.dll
regsvr32 Msxml2.dll
regsvr32 Msxml.dll
3. Please also install MSXML 3.0 SP5 from the following link:
Microsoft XML Parser (MSXML) 3.0 Service Pack 5 (SP5):
http://download.microsoft.com/download/a/5...91d8/msxml3.msi (http://\"http://download.microsoft.com/download/a/5/e/a5e03798-2454-4d4b-89a3-4a47579891d8/msxml3.msi\")
Suggestion 2: Clear the Windows Update temporary folder and reset Internet
Explorer settings.
This error can occur if the temporary folder of Windows Update has been
corrupted. I suggest we delete this folder to test the issue:
1. Click Start, Run, type: %windir%\system32 and press Enter.
2. In the opened folder, find a folder named CatRoot2 and delete it.
Please also clear the Internet Explorer cache, and reset the Internet
Explorer options:
1. Click Start, Run, type: inetcpl.cpl and press Enter to open the Internet
options window.
2. Click "Delete Cookies" and select Yes to confirm.
3. Click "Delete Files" and select Yes to confirm.
4. Click Settings, click "View Objects". Delete all the objects in this
folder. If some objects cannot be deleted, please restart the computer and
try again.
5. Switch to the Security tab, select Internet and click "Default Level".
6. Switch to the Privacy tab, and click "Default" button.
=========================================================================
I don't want to muddy the waters with this issue but maybe it's related to what's going on with my wifes account. I certainly don't know.
Anyway, here are the logs, hijack this and highjack this uninstall, you requested:

Hi,
I attached the Dr. Web report. The scan took a while but turned up no files that couldn't be deleted it appeared, and it only found two things to delete.
After running the report, and rebooting, I checked my wife's account. Both entries for "Disable Script Debugging" where checked. So was "Display a notification about every script error". Note that even after I unchecked it, I managed to get a couple of those script error dialogs to appear.
Dale
Well, I wasn't allowed to attach a csv file. Below are the contents of the report:

Let's see if we can narrow this down
In your wife's account
Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:
ALL the 018 entries
The ones that look like the following
O18 - Protocol: bwf0s - {FC07E24D-225B-4E3E-8455-045B3133AA99} - C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\BWPlugProtocol-8876480.dll
After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis
Reboot the computer
Sign back in With the wife's account
Don't open a browser window yet
Instead, access Internet options via Control Panel
Under the Advanced tab, ensure that you have those options set
2 entries are Checked
1 entry UNChecked
Apply it if you have to change it
Under the General tab
Can you manually change the Start page
Change it to something like
http://www.google.com/ (http://\"http://www.google.com/\")
Apply and Ok it
Exit internet options
Try starting IE, any script errors?
Do you have any problems with Firefox?

I followed all your instructions to the letter and was able to successfully start IE with no script errors. Firefox worked/is working fine too.
After starting IE with no errors - which it has been doing with her account, but not the new account I created prior to working with you - I tried printing the current web page. As soon as I did I got the "empty" script error dialog. :-( Note I did check the IE Advanced tab entries per your instructions and they were still set properly - disables set, tell me about errors not set, from my previous update. But despite the fact I did not want to hear about script errors I did anyway.
Now what sir?

If I understand correctly
Your account works fine
The wife's account now works fine?
Do you need the new account?
You only get script errors when you try and print in IE?
What about Firefox? Any errors trying to Print?

Her account is not fine. The IE Script error seems to pop up quite easily still. She likes to print her emails and it happens without fail when she does so. (We both use Outlook Express as our email client. It prints fine for me.) When I was doing things on her account, I noticed you can't print from IE7 either. Also, there was some Dell program in her tool tray. I thought I'd shut it down and stop it from running for her. When I did, I got the IE script error. I have no idea why. What does it have to do with IE or script?
I do not need a new account on the system. Before requesting your assistance I had the brainstorm of just trying to create a new account for her. Thinking maybe she had a messed up registry entry in her account, so I'd create a new account for her to use and delete/disable her old account. After all, my account doesn't seem to be exhibiting such bad behavior. So I tried it. As soon as I started IE7 on the new account though, before any web page would display, the darn IE Script error dialog appeared and that was all she wrote. All I could do was start task manager and kill IE. At least on her account, IE displays web pages, or at least her home page, without getting the IE Script error. The new account was worthless as far as being able to use IE. So I gave up on that idea.
Anyway, I created the bat file as you suggested on her account. Shut all the windows down and ran it. Two errors occurred. And by the way, after I rebooted, I tried IE on her account, and while it started and displayed the Google web page I configured it for, as soon as I tried to try and print, the IE Script error dialog appeared. And with all of the diagnostic information completely blank as always. (I didn't even try to open OE and print from it.)
I wrote down the 2 errors that appeared and here they are (they all said RegSvr32 in their title bar):
1) LoadLibrary ("Msjava.dll") failed. The specified module could not be found.
2) Mshtml.dll was loaded, but the Dll Register Server entry point was not found. This file can not be registered.
I ran the IE.bat on her account only. Not mine. Would it hurt to do so? Should I?

Try printing in OE and see if you get any errors in her account
In IE7, try printing
But try the following first
Find a page you want to print in IE
Click on FILE>>PRINT PREVIEW
Turn OFF>>Headers and footers>>(It should be the 5th button from the left
Then click the Printer button>>(First on the left)
Still error messages?
EDIT>>Can you also verify your version of IE7
In the wife's account
In IE7, click HELP>>About Internet Explorer
Post back Version no please

That was fun.
I tried printing in OE. Got the script error.
I tried FILE>>PRINT PREVIEW and before I could turn off anything, I got the script error
I even got the script error after I clicked Help and as soon as I clicked on About Internet Explorer.
I signed off her account, signed on to mine and started IE and got to About no problem. The version is 7.0.5730.11 Update Versions was 0.

That's interesting, do you know what it's related too?
Besides Dell?
Can you post a fresh hijackthis log from the wife's account

I do not know what the Dell thing is related to. The icon says it's "Dell Support".

I do see Dell Support running, not sure why it would be the cause of the problem, or if it is?
I think the best route is to try disabling everything for now on startup and try printing, see if the error box is still generated
Try a Clean boot as described by Microsoft
Method 2 at the link
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353 (http://\"http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353\")
Let's see if we can narrow this down

Hi,
Didn't mean to imply the Dell Support thing was the culprit. Just that it was odd that messing with it too causes the script error to occur.
Did the clean boot. Evidently it's not something running that's causing the problem because after restarting and signing back on to her account. I started OE, opened an email, clicked on the print icon and boom, there was the IE script error dialog again.
You didn't ask but here's a hijackthis log I created after I killed OE to get control back after that IE script error occurred:

Let's try reregistering some files one more time and see if it helps
Download Dial-a-fix-v0.60.0.24.zip (http://\"http://djlizard.net.nyud.net:8080/software/Dial-a-fix-v0.60.0.24.zip\") DAF by DjLizard
Alternate download location (http://\"http://djlizard.net/software/Dial-a-fix-v0.60.0.24.zip\")
Unzip it to the wife's desktop
Open the folder and double click on dial-a-fix.exe
Put a tick in Empty Temp folders
Also, put a tick in "Explorer/IE/OE/shell/WMP
close down all IE/OE windows
Then click the GO button
Let this finish
See if that helps

No more script errors! Yeah!
I ran the dial a fix app. It had several issues at first though. Some were errors the app had evidently not seen before as it gave no suggestion on how to fix them and simply asked to send the log that was created to them and some having to do with access being denied and it said to run repair permissions. So I did. Then I reran the dial fix app and it had no problems whatsoever. I rebooted and tried printing an email and tried printing from IE and all worked no problem. I could even see the about box in IE now. ;-)
What else might I need do before we're "done" with this issue?
Change what gets started via msconfig? Any recommendations as to what to leave off and on? Seems like everything's off now.
What about virus protection? You questioned why I had none at the start of this discussion. Did you notice any viruses on my system from all the logs you looked at?
I'd like to tackle why Windows update is not working next if that's okay. If so, I'd be happy to start a new post in the forum if that's the right thing to do.
Thanks for all your help and sticking with me on this. My wife asked if you ever slept. You must enjoy doing this to be online so much.

That's good to know, thanks for posting that back
Yes, go back to msconfig, under the General tab select Normal startup
Apply and Close>>restart
Boot into wife's account and ensure there are no problems
I know your trying to save resources with No Antivirus installed, but that's not to safe
I have a link to a free AV, post back and let me know if you want to go this route
We can disable other entries to save resources

FYI the Windows update issue is that whenver I run it, the browser opens up, allows me to select either the express or custom update, it "thinks" for a while and after "checking for updates" for a moment it I get a web page with the following information on it:
[Error number: 0x80244030]
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.
I showed you a whole bunch of steps in a previous post, that if I run through them all, windows update works just fine. Once.

I forgot about this also

Are you manually trying to visit Windows updates
Are you set to Automatic in Automatic updates in Control Panel?

I showed you a whole bunch of steps in a previous post, that if I run through them all, windows update works just fine. Once.
I forgot all about that too, sorry, was at a Wedding yesterday, my heads still a bit fuzzy
Can you try the following
Open back up Dial-a-fix.exe
Select Adjust time/date
under Prep
Also tick Fix Windows Update
This will additionally select other entries, leave them selected
Close all IE/OE windows
Select GO
Ensure time and date are correct
Let DAF finish
Reboot the computer and see if Windows updates now work

1) I ran msconfig as you suggested. Tested a couple of things and all seems well on the wife's account.
2) I'm willing to run antivirus software on this system if you'd send me the directions.
3) I am manually trying to run windows updates. Start > All Programs > Windows Update. I do have Automatic Updates set in Control Panel. It doesn't seem to matter as I haven't been prompted to install updates in months.
Let's go after the Windows update stuff before installing AV software if that's okay. I'd go either way or do both if you like.
Thanks,

I followed your instructions in post #22 and Windows update, at least manually, is working just fine again! I have no idea how it, or what went on with my wife's account occurred. If you know something I should done to avoid either issue, please let me know.
Thank you so much.

Actually, it's one we rented, the wife and I both fell asleep while watching it

What I did see looks good>>"The Number 23" so we'll watch the rest later, only got a half hour into it
I'm not sure what happened on her account to have the problems she experienced
But repairing permissions and registering files have sure helped restore functionality
As far as Automatic Windows updates, they usually come out with new updates
on or after the second Tuesday of every month
So you may not see any till on or after that day, which should be the 14th this month
So anytime after that date
Let's get you a free AV, this one is fairly low on resources too
Go to this link

Download and install AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 7.5.476
Ensure it is updated and run a complete scan
Reboot afterwards, come back here and post a fresh hijackthis log and we'll see what we can
disable on startup

Hi,
I got the AV installed. Ran a full scan from my account and nothing was found.
/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />
I signed on to my wifes account next. The AV asked me to check for updates, run a scan, tell it when to run, etc. I chose not to scan or try to update again. At least not yet.
I did run hijack this. I'll paste the log below.
I saw that movie at Blockbuster last weekend. It's got Jim Carrey? Kind of looked like a "dark" movie so I chose to not rent it. Maybe I will now. Of course it didn't keep you interested enough to stay awake. ;-) Tell me what you thought after you watched it please.
Here's the log.
Thanks,
Dale

No issues other than the performance dip since installing the Antivirus software.

Last we spoke you were going to look over the HiJackthis log files I'd posted and let me know if there were any apps I could disable from starting automatically.
Plus, if you have any advice as far as maybe making the AV software a little less intrusive performance wise I'd sure appreciate hearing it.
Thanks,
Dale

EXCLUDING the entries related to AVG antivirus
Decide what you need running on startup, you can disable some of them
None are malicious but you may not need them running on startup, this can save startup time and resources
Check with a program itself to disable it from running on startup, then afterwards
Instead of using msconfig to disable an entry from running
Try a small tool called
Codestuff's STARTER (http://\"http://www.snapfiles.com/get/starter.html\")
Disable what you don't need on startup
To help track down entries use this link
http://www.castlecops.com/modules.php?name=StartupList (http://\"http://www.castlecops.com/modules.php?name=StartupList\")
Here's an eg...
This entry
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE
Copy>paste to the search field at Castlecops the following
OSA.EXE
I come up with the following
Application which launches common MS Office components to help speed up the launch of Office programs. It's somewhat of a resource hog and some users claim there's no difference with or without it but it usually isn't required - Note: if you make use of the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar outside an office program this application will need to be enabled for it to show.
I would definitely disable from running on startup
Do NOT disable AVG, but you can disable AVG's scheduled scan, but run a scan manually every once in awhile
Double click the AVG icon by the clock
Right click on SCHEDULER and select "Scheduled Tasks"
Highlight "Test plan in basic mode" and select "Edit Schedule"
Untick "periodically start scheduled......."
Ok out of there
hope that helps
