Title: CD-ROM Missing in WIN XP
Post by: ricdiculous on August 24, 2007, 09:01:41 PM
I have a Sony VAIO PCG-Z1VA laptop and the CD-Rom drive has gone missing from MY COMPUTER as well as Device Manager.  I used the recovery DVD supplied by Sony to recover my system and the drive is still missing, though it read the recovery disk from start up.  I am seriously going insane trying to figure this out.  Please, please help.  Here is my Hijack This log:

Can you do the following
Download Hijackthis 2.0.2 from my signature below
SAVE it to your desktop

Double click on HJTInstall.exe to run it
Choose Install

Hijackthis v2.0.2 will open

Under Main Menu,
Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Come back here and post a fresh hijackthis log

Also,
Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad)
Hit OK
Copy the contents of the CODE box, not including the word "code"
Paste it to the empty Notepad file
In Notepad click FILE>>SAVE AS
Change the Save as Type to All Files.
Name the file as Export.bat

Save this file on the desktop

Code: [Select]
regedit /e Export.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}"

Double click on Export.bat
A file call export.txt will produce on the desktop, can you copy>>paste back here it's contents too please

That registry export looks ok
Can you try the following
I'm not sure what recording software you use

Try the following
Install CDBurnerXP pro
from here
http://www.cdburnerxp.se/download.php?latest (http://\"http://www.cdburnerxp.se/download.php?latest\")
After installation,
Restart the computer, do the CD drive show?

The E:/ drive is back for the time being, sometimes it goes away and comes back while I am looking at the My Computer screen, but all programs are recognizing it now and it appears stable for the time being.  Thank you very much for the help.  I will repost and let you know whether the problem rears its ugly head again.  By the way, can you explain to me what you think may have caused this glitch, or what usually causes this kind of glitch?
Regards,

Ok, the cd-rom drive was back and working, then Windows update installed XP SP2 (because I recovered the system, updates are being installed left and right) and upon restart the drive is gone again.  Also, as of late, Norton Internet Security has been alerting URL Directory Traversal attacks from the IP address 127.0.0.1 which is the Loopback address, used by the host computer to send a message back to itself. It is commonly used for troubleshooting and network testing.  I wonder if the problems are related.

I will download and install the cd burning software you suggested.  Currently I have DIVX player and Windows Media Player software.

Again, thank you for your time.

I thought you already installed CDBurnerpro, then read on to find you haven't
So I'm a bit confused at what steps your doing

Install ALL the Windows updates
Ensure to reboot the computer afterwards

Back in Windows
Delete export.txt on your desktop, double click on Export.bat again, post the contents of the new export.txt

What version of DivX do you have installed, did you reinstall it immediately after restoring your computer?

I have followed all of your steps completely to this point, other than installing CDBurnerPro.  I waited on that one to see if the other fixes worked because I had read that installing CD burning software can lead to a loss of the CD-ROM drive.  I have, however, since installed the software.  It seems to be hit and miss with my E:/ drive.  Earlier today it was available and worked fine, then I left for a while and when I got back my laptop was hibernating and when I brought it out of hibernation the E:/ drive disappeared on me.

The new Export.txt follows:

Do you have any other periphials hooked to the computer
Eg.. External harddrive, USB thumbdrive, etc....??

Does it only disappear after it comes out of hibernation?
Does the drive disappear from Device manager?
   1. Click the Start button, then click Control Panel.
The Pick a Category window appears.
   2. Click Performance and Maintenance.
   3. Click the icon named System.
      The System Properties window appears.
   4. Click the Hardware tab.
   5. Click the Device Manager button.
      The Device Manager window appears.
   6. Click the plus (+) symbol next to the category DVD/CD-ROM drives.
The CD drive or drives are listed.

Can you also try the following
==Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad)
Hit OK
Copy the contents of the CODE box, not including the word "code"
Paste it to the empty Notepad file
In Notepad click FILE>>SAVE AS
IMPORTANT>>>Change the Save as Type to All Files.
Name the file as Look.bat

Save this file on the desktop

Code: [Select]
regedit /e peek1.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}"
regedit /e peek2.txt "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer"
type peek1.txt >> look.txt
type peek2.txt >> look.txt
del peek*.txt
start notepad look.txt

Double click on Look.bat, a text file will open, copy>>paste back the contents
If it closes, there should be a file called look.txt on desktop with the same info

I have no other peripherals connected to the computer.

It disappears/ reappears at random, upon restart, upon coming out of hibernation, or in the middle of browsing the web.  There seems to be no apparent pattern.

The drive definitely disappears from device manager.

I'm not seeing anything wrong, it may be a problem with a piece of software and the CD rom itself
What is the Exact model of CD/DVD do you have?
You can find that info in device manager

Can you also
supply an uninstall list from Hijackthis
Open Hijackthis>>Open MISC TOOLS SECTION>>Open UNINSTALL MANAGER
Click the SAVE LIST... button
Save the list to your desktop then copy>>Paste back here the Whole contents

and another check
Download this file - Combofix.exe (http://\"http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/Beta/ComboFix.exe\") and save it ONLY to your desktop
Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Post the log from Combofix
