Title: Problems with DVD rom
Post by: Mirrorboy on September 10, 2007, 10:41:27 AM: So I got this new laptop. And I thought that I'd install XP again. But when entered the disc, nothing happened. It doesn't read ANY disc i give it. My DVDrom is HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GCA-4080N . Any help appreciated. And the laptop is Acer aspire 3k .

I worked with another user who had the same drive and similiar problems
Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad)
Hit OK
Copy the contents of the CODE box, not including the word "code"
Paste it to the empty Notepad file
In Notepad click FILE>>SAVE AS
Change the Save as Type to All Files.
Name the file as export.bat

Save this file on the desktop

You may want to go into device manager and uninstall the DVD device
Reboot, Windows should autodetect it and reinstall

Sometimes when i enter the disc, the cd icon at the mouse pointer blinks a few times but still nothing /sad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' />. Also when I click the rom icon, it enters it like a folder thats empty and on the sidebar there are cdburning options. Doesn't matter if CD in or not.

Download [color=\"#008000\"]Deckard's System Scanner (dss.exe)[/color] (http://\"http://deckard.geekstogo.com/dss.exe\") to your desktop.
Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open; main.txt, which will be maximized and extra.txt, which will be minimized.

Post the contents of main.txt and extra.txt

Have your tried a CD lens cleaner?

Anything you recently installed just before this problem started?

Have you tried a music CD>>Manufactured, not a burnt copy to see if you can get it to start
You may have to go thru MyComputer to get it to run

I see entries related to Nero 7 and InCD, did you recently have it installed and then uninstalled

Is this a new computer to you or a New computer from Acer? Is it still under warranty?

Back in Windows
Download this tool

Unzip to desktop
Run InCD CleanTool by double-clicking it. The program will then remove all InCD files and entries from your system.
Reboot the computer

Any luck with DVD drive?
Still no luck, uninstall it again from ~~Add/remove programs~~ device manager and reboot
Let it autodetect
See if it's any help

About nero and incd i don't know, they were here when i got them.I uninstalled a lot of programs after the last log file. And I' going to try the incd and nero removers you posted atm. Edit-didn't work, Im beginning to think that this cdrom is really broken.

It looks like you have been adding more software such as Daemon tools
Are you able to create CD's with it?

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {840105D1-D1F1-4337-AFAF-10F23178AB31} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [au] C:\Program Files\Dealio\DealioAU.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WhenUSave] "C:\Program Files\Save\Save.exe"

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - AutorunsDisabled - (no file)

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Access your add/remove programs and remove
WhenU Save

Also remove the older version of Java
Javaâ„¢ SE Runtime Environment 6

But don't remove Java 6 update 2

Reboot the computer
Back in Windows

Update Avg Antispyware 7,5
run a complete system scan and clean what it finds, save a report later and post it's contents back here with a fresh hijackthis log

Also it seems that after I inserted the cleaner-dvd alot, it started doing some sounds,like it was spinning the disc around, but till doesn't work.
Also I tried googling something and I came up with a question from someone and saw that I had the same problem. The problem is that my hard drive and dvd-rom drive are on the same location (0) when I look at them in the device manager.

Now, possibly in computer management if your drive letter changed that could cause problems
What letter is your cd drive set to?

Also I think that when I first got this laptop, the name of the rom was like Lost 3 or something. Edit- I think it was the share name or something because that couldn't be it. Although, when I opened My Computer there was Lost 3 or something similar instead of D .

Sounds like just a name given' to the drive, you can right click on it and select Properties
and blank out or change the name

Try changing the drive letter of your DVD rom
Right click MyComputer>>select MANAGE>>Disk Management
On the right hand side right click on your DVD ROM
and select Change drive letter and paths....

Click Change..
From the drop down menu assign a new letter, as eg.. make it one that may not conflict, such as X

OK your way out of there
Reboot the computer and see if the Rom is recognized as X in MyComputer afterwards

You could go that route, but would probably involve pulling the harddrive
Or even possibly using a pcmcia or usb cd
Many have troubles that route, XP won't see it before installation, afterwards no problems
But if USB legacy drivers are enabled in bios you may have a chance

Best luck, pull the harddrive and format with another computer
Minimal price also, just may need an adapter
It will be some work, but may solve your problems
