Title: Computer running extremely slow
Post by: bthrupp on October 08, 2007, 07:09:19 AM
Hi I have a Dell dimension e521 with 2 gigs of ram and an AMD X2 4400+ processor. Up until a couple of days ago it was running fine and fast but all of a sudden its running really slow and i dont know why. I ran a full McAffee virus scan twice (fully updated) and it detects no viruses. When I try and play a game it runs extremely slow and when I try and exit it it takes 10-15 minutes! Trying to do anything on this computer seems to be a stuggle! please help!!

Download Hijackthis Installer from HERE (http://\"http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe\")
For an alternate download location, you can try HERE  (http://\"http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/HijackThis/1071179190/1\")
SAVE it to your desktop
Double click on HJTInstall.exe to run it
Choose Install

Hijackthis v2.0.2 will open

Under Main Menu, Select
Do a system scan and save a Log file
A log will open in Notepad
Copy and Paste the Whole log back here to the forum

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O16 - DPF: {00000005-0000-0000-0000-100011000004} - http://c.imputati.com/l/2314702baaf9f5776f...c8ac70b8_35.exe (http://\"http://c.imputati.com/l/2314702baaf9f5776f...c8ac70b8_35.exe\")

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Download Deckard's System Scanner (dss.exe) (http://\"http://deckard.geekstogo.com/dss.exe\") to your desktop.
Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open; main.txt, which will be maximized and extra.txt, which will be minimized.

Post the contents of  main.txt and extra.txt

How is everything?
Have you installed any new software lately, think hard!
Title: Computer running extremely slow

Its still running slow. I installed a few demos and I recently renewed my subscription to McAfee security centre and I reinstalled battlefield 2 I think thats all ive done in the past couple of days. I also cant uninstall some things because I keep getting a notification that setup.exe has stopped working and sometimes windows explorer needs to be restarted after a prompt!

Try removing the demos that you installed
If you get an error message trying to uninstall them
Give me the Exact error message

I managed to remove the crimson skies demo but when i try the others i get this message, setup.exe has stopped working, a problem caused the program to stop working correctly Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

Which exact demos did you recently install, you have so many I can't be sure

Can you try removing them in safe mode

Try this, I'm not using Vista yet, but this may work

Use the Windows key + R keys to bring up the Run command

Type in
cmd
DON'T hit OK
Instead use the following key combination
Ctrl+Shift + Enter keys

This should allow you to use the command prompt as Admin
If you get a User Control prompt, you can close it by using the Alt+C keys

At the command prompt, copy>>paste the next entry in bold
below

RunDll32 C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\INSTAL~1\PROFES~1\RunTime\110\Intel32\Ctor.dll,LaunchSetup "C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{40298771-B565-4FDD-B14E-26BA989AE00B}\setup.exe" -l0x9 -removeonly

Hit Enter, will it uninstall?

"C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{40298771-B565-4FDD-B14E-26BA989AE00B}\setup.exe" -l0x9 -removeonly

I chose installed correctly.
So you told it to do nothing it appears, choose the other option and see what happens
Something is causing a mess I suspect

I find info about Blazing Angels Squadrons of WWII Demo
Recommendation for OS is Only Windows XP, nothing mentions Vista

Out of the following games, which have you recently installed before the slowdowns
Look closely, you have many demos installed, are they all Vista compatible, I'm not going to look them up individually
I'll leave that up to you

I tried the command again and got no message this time but it still appears in add/remove. The demos that I downloaded almost all of them worked and the ones that don't I just delete (sega rally) but that was about a week or two before the slowdown started.

I downloaded these just before the problems started and some others but they are no longer on the computer.

Well, the only other thing you may want to try is a system restore to a point before the slowdowns
See if that's any help
Here's a link explaining
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vis...system-restore/ (http://\"http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/using-windows-vista-system-restore/\")

Take note of the recommendation of running it in Safe mode!

I tried the system restore point but the oldest one was five days and still the same problem. I think I got it sorted out though its running fine for now I reformatted the hard drive using windows factory image restore (at least I think thats what its called) and it seems ok. Thanks for your help /biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />

Well, that was probably going to be the next step anyways  /biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />
It appears that some software was causing problems, careful in what you install
Ensure to get your security software installed and updated

Do you still have your subscription to McAfee's?
Or do you need a free alternative?

Will do i'll be more cautious in what i install in the future!! /rolleyes.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />  I have McAfees, just renewed the subscription last week for a year so hopefully it will prevent this from happening again! Thanks again  /biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />
