Title: How to load in SATA Drives?
Post by: Small Shoe Magoo on October 13, 2007, 08:54:24 PM
Well, The new drive my dad got is an SATA one, while I've been running an IDE one, so the SATA drives were never loaded into the motherboard. Could you tell me where I could find this and where I would load this to?

Thanks a lot,
Matt

That's unbelieveable
During your response you never once named the model>>make of you harddrive

Or what operating system you are running
Others may want to know

Give all your detailed specs.
Others may chime in

Heh, yeah sorry about that, The motherboard is a Biostar model, heres the link http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en-us/mb/content.php?S_ID=261 (http://\"http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en-us/mb/content.php?S_ID=261\")

Harddrive is a Maxtor.. idk if that is really important.

Im running windows xp professional 32x

Im just really confused :|

It sounds as if your just adding another drive and not loading a new Operating system

You should be able to mount the new disk in the computer
Supply it with power and attach the Sata cable to motherboard
It's a bit hard to see in the pic but it looks like the Sata connectors are on the bottom left
choose Sata 1

That's about it, you may have to look in the bios to ensure Sata is enabled and the drive is recognized

There was my old thread, and once again thanks for the help.

I could just go along using my old harddrive, but it is very much infested w/ spyware etc. and I would love to just completely reformat it.

When I go to the windows xp setup, it says "setup cannot find any mass storage devices"

I disabled the SATA from the bios, but since im using a SATA one now I really need that enabled /tongue.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />

Umm, It just won't recognize my harddrive. I have already connected it through SATA 1.

Sorry for being unclear of what the problem is, and I would gladly pay for your service, might as well instead of paying some people down at compUSA xD.

You previously said I might need to load the SATA in from the f6 part of the installation? I think you meant the beginning of the windows xp installation where it says "press f6 if you want to install any third party RAID drives etc", but yeah...when pressing f6 it doesn't do anything.

Thanks again,
Matt

Do you have a floppy drive on the computer?
If not, I would use one from another computer temporarily

At the part of the installation that prompts the F6
This is where you need the floppy with the Sata drivers on them

I believe you can get the Driver from your Motherboard disk, you should of got one when you bought the new motherboard

Here's a link I found that will explain what files you need of the motherboard disk
http://cruftbox.com/blog/archives/000867.html (http://\"http://cruftbox.com/blog/archives/000867.html\")

Edit: Here's another link from biostar
http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en-us/suppor...php?search=Sata (http://\"http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en-us/support/faq.php?search=Sata\")

Edit again>> From the pdf manual
It appears that your Sata ATA chip is the VIA  VT6420

So you will want to look in this directory on the CD to look for the files to go to floppy
D:\DRIVER\SerATA\VT6420\DriverDisk

D: represents the letter of the CD
Also, ensure you enable Sata in bios, correct settings from the link I gave you to biostar
