Title: bizzare win2k problem
Post by: Dave on October 14, 2002, 11:27:58 PM
Hey guys I need some help with this realy bizzare win2k problem.
 2 days ago I rebooted my machine and it locked up at GUI screen just before the log on screen. Here are all the changes I have made since the last boot up;
  Installed Nemo Pack(a bunch of codec)
  Installed Ac3 (audio codec)
  Installed XVid (video codec)
  Installed eDonkey2000(p2p file share)
Ran it with all these for several days no problems(no reboots during this time). I rebooted and the screen locked up. I restarted in safemode and uninstalled all but eDonkey2000 (I really don\'t think that eDonkey is the cause of the problem since I know others run this program on win2k without problems). Still no luck. I then rebooted and used the bootlog on the F8 menu. I was able to boot into the machine but not able to do things like change the time on the clock, get to the display properties, device manager, or just about any thing in the control panel.I have tried all the ways there is to change or get to these things but none of them work. What it does when I try to get access is this; hour glass icon shows up for several seconds, hard drive spins up and then stops and hour glass disapears....No error messages at all.
Any Ideas where to start on this one????? Help is needed. I really don\'t want to do a fresh install.  If you have any ideas you can email me at davidr912Email Removed

Thanks
Dave

Did you try \"Last known good configuration \" in the safe mode

Yes I did try last known good configuration and it does work but a normal boot does not work. I can no longer get into most of the control panel settings (i.e. time settings, device manager, display properties, add remove hardware, add remove software, modems, mouse, keyboard......etc.) Even from safe mode.

Normally , if you press F8 , and then
Last good configuration instead of safe mode ,Most of the time you get  into win2k and everything works fine .You could also run chkdsk /f on the \"startmenue ,run\" ,restart the computer  , the last settings will then be saved and chkdisk will then run while the computer is restarting  .If the problems aren\'t gone then there\'s  really something wrong .
Could be a virus , or some real  messed up files
You can also restart the computer  with the original w2k cd and make a repair  with it .
Good luck

Thanks for your help. I ended up not doing a repair (for some reason probaly related to the problem I wasn\'t able to even get to the screen where it asked me if I wanted to do a repair on the disk)but instead reinstalling but using the upgrade not fresh (clean) install. I lost nothing doing that and everything seems to be working now. Thanks again
