Apparently, Jagex has owned a few of the domain named for MechScape since 2003, indicating it has been in progress for more than a few years.
I just read up a little on it, and it seems to be pretty much exactly like RuneScape, but space-based instead of medieval. the graphics do look a lot better, especially for a java-based MMORPG.
Here is an example of the basic MechScape character model:

Supposedly, it is going to be a sequel to the 1999 "CyberWars", another space-based MMORPG by Jagex.

Seems to me that the way they are handling RuneScape (crappy updates, upsetting the members at every turn) combined with the release of a new similarly designed game with better graphics would not result well for RuneScape...
What do you guys think?

Release date is set for some time in 2008, but it has been in secret development for 5 years.

It has to be the weirdest game concept Ive ever heard. And they could have at least used textures. Those models must be about 100 polygons... :S

I think that Jagex will put so much effort into MechScape that RuneScape will die, and then MechScape will end up sucking too. So, Jagex will shut down and all of the developers will be forced to kill themselves.

i just hope jagex doesnt keep ruining runescape with these worthless updates >.<
