Post by: davbaseball01 on February 01, 2008, 05:30:20 PM
Is it possible to transfer the I386 file to a CD-RW and install XP onto a Windows 98 system?

you mean I386 folder.
Typically yes if setup.exe is included, but you will need to activate the new system with microsoft. (WGA)
Have your key number handy.  Do you need help with that too?

On the system with XP installed (and has I386 folder) run "magic jellybean" it will tell you the Key used on that machine.  http://www.download.com/3001-2094_4-10664536.html (http://\"http://www.download.com/3001-2094_4-10664536.html\")
Write is down or print it.

I am assuming you are moving from one system to another.
If you are trying to use XP and same key on both machines, after installing you need to use the first 2 links in my signature below.

Get properties on the folder.  It needs to be about 550Meg or more in size.
If not, then it is junk left over from a prior operating system.

I guess the folder is incomplete.

I saw a study that put Windows 98 as only .62% of operating systems used by internet users.  This would imply that it not used much except on very old machines.

Sounds like Davbaseball01 has an OEM install XP without the original microsoft discs.  Most OEMs now charge extra for Microsoft install discs and only give a recovery disc to restore your system to the condition that you purchased it in.

Sorry for not responding in a few days. I wanted XP because I just bought a wirless network apapter for an older computer  (the one with 98), and didnt realize it needed at least 2000 *oops*. I was a bit frusterated with XP not working and ended up stumbling across an old 2000 disk. Poped it in and it runs fine now. Even though XP didnt work, i appreciate the help!
