Title: new HD install probs
Post by: robk on November 12, 2002, 12:04:40 PM
posting this for friend....thanks for any help in advance

I have a major problem with my computer, it doesnt recognize the 80 gig hard drive I installed (well, it does, but it only sees it as being 7 Gigs)...obviously this must get fixed right now. I\'ve done everything from partitioning and formatting through windows, and using the software that came with the hard drive as well....no matter what, it only sees 7 gigs.

I\'m guessing this is a BIOS problem...so I went to my motherboard manufacturer\'s site (ASUS). I have a P4T board (it\'s about 1 year old, 1.8 Ghz), and my BIOS is currently v0006, the upgrade is v1006. I followed all of the instructions on how to upgrade BIOS here:

http://usa.asus.com/inside/flash_mb.htm (http://\"http://usa.asus.com/inside/flash_mb.htm\")

...very simple quick directions.

I did the first part with the boot disk, copying the AFLASH.EXE file from the CD-ROM to the a: floppy. This gave me the error message \"NTLDR is missing. Press any key to restart\". After that, I put the NTLDR file onto the A: (it\'s an extensionless file on the c drive). I rebooted....now I get the error message \"Invalid BOOT.INI file. booting from c:winnt. NTDETECT failed.\" After that, it crashed.

I can\'t contact ASUS because they want the serial number from the box of the motherboard, which I dont have. If anyone could help or if you could forward this to someone who can help....please do, I\'d really appreciate it! If you think that this is NOT a BIOS problem, let me know.

PS-- I\'m running Windows 2000. I dont know why it\'s giving error messages that look like they pertain to Windows NT

You must first make a  DOS bootdisk in w2k by putting the w2k cdrom into your computer , go to Valueadd folder , then open the 3rdparty folder , ca-antiv folder and put a floppy in A: then  execute makedisk.bat . When the disk is ready delete all the files on it exept :
command.com -io.sys-drvspace.bin and
msdos.sys .Copy aflash.exe and the bios file on it and restart your computer .
with the floppy in A (don\'t forget to take your w2k  cd out first  ). You will enter DOS and drive A:  then follow instructions to install the bios .
