Title: Internet Connection
Post by: Power-I on March 04, 2008, 07:47:41 PM
My wireless dsl connection is terrible, I mean my connection speed is fine but it constantly disconnects and reconnects. Should I call verizon about this, or is this something that I can fix on my own?

Although it may not be malicious activity causing the dropped connections
I like to rule it out

Can you first start by doing the following
Download Hijackthis Installer from HERE (http://\"http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe\")
For an alternate download location, you can try HERE  (http://\"http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/HijackThis/1071179190/1\")
SAVE it to your desktop
Double click on HJTInstall.exe to run it
Choose Install

Hijackthis v2.0.2 will open

Under Main Menu, Select
Do a system scan and save a Log file
A log will open in Notepad
Copy and Paste the Whole log back here to the forum

Have you always had continous dropped connections?
Or did this just start recently happen

Have you checked for firmware updates?
What is the exact make/model of wireless router?

Um, Yeah I've had dropped connections before but It was never this severe.. I'd really like to get rid of them or at least minimize them as much as possible. I had the phoneline switched a few weeks ago, but I talked to verizon and had them help me set up the system again.

I don't know what a firmware update is, and the wireless router is a "D-link --- Model  Dl-624"

How often is the connection dropping?
Does it drop when a cordless phone or another appliance is in use?

Post by: Power-I on March 04, 2008, 10:13:45 PM
When I'm on my laptop it doesn't occur much at all, but when I'm on my desktop its probably every 15-30 minutes. The connection is fine when the cordless phone is in use, I'm not sure of anything else that would effect it.

I don't think it's running, but are you using Norton's Firewall?
If so, can you temporarily disable it and see if you still get dropped connections
Also, can you ensure Windows Firewall is disabled as well

Norton's Firewall was enabled, I disabled that.
Its been 10-15 minutes and it seems to be running great.

I really don't know what to say, but my internet on my desktop hasn't disconnected all day. I've had the norton firewall enabled all day. Maybe it fixed itself? Idk

Maybe all Norton's needed was a kick in the butt, I'm not sure  /laugh.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

Could of been you were blocking something that needed connection, either incoming or outgoing
IDK

You can compare the logs in Nortons and see what it may be that was distrupting your connection, may be a clue
