With no warning signs out of no where I hear a tiny click from my tower and my computer just locks up when I load Steam up.
-
As it seems it's just Steam related
Best check out there FAQ

They have AVG listed as a program that is not compatable with steam.
-
As a troubleshooting step, go ahead and uninstall AVG 7.5 AntiVirus and Anti-Malware if installed
Reboot the computer
Back in Windows, ensure that all of AVG was removed
You can post a hijackthis log to ensure
Don't do much browsing and downloading on the internet, as you will be without AV software
We can get you another later
Try Steam, not sure if it will help, but it may
-
Well, that doesn't appear to be the problem.
I have a sneaky suspicion its a bad memory stick although its not blue screening like it did last time.
You may recall last time I was not able to get the memory test to run. Is there any type of memory test that I can burn to DVD instead. I couldn't get the cd to load or work last time.
-
Ok I got it to burn. But when I reboot my computer the dam test doesn't run.
Ok I got it to burn. But when I reboot my computer the dam test doesn't run.
I have no idea what your response is related too
Why don't you post the the Steam forums???
-
The mentest86 iso. I can't get the test to run. The forums on steam are useless.
-
Did you burn the .iso as an image file?
Did you set your computer to boot from CD first in the bios?
-
I down loaded the file. I used nero and burned it to a cd. Not sure what or how to burn it as an image file.
Yes I changed the bios to start from the cd rom.
It didn't work.
-
What version of Nero are you using?
Here's a direct link to Memtest86 ver. 3.3
http://www.memtest86.com/memtest86-3.3.iso.zip (http://\"http://www.memtest86.com/memtest86-3.3.iso.zip\")
Save it and unzip the contents to desktop
Right-click on a ZIP file and select the Extract All.
Press the Next button.
Enter the path where you would like the files to be extracted to.
After you set the location where you wish the file to be extracted to, press the Next button.
The file has now been extracted
Uncheck the box labeled Show extracted files. Then press the finish button.
Put in a CDR or CDRW, I prefer CDRW so you can reuse it later
Burn memtest86-3.3.iso to the CD
Remember to burn as an image file
Boot the computer with it, it should auto run
-
Wow it worked. Test is running!!!!!
How long does test take to run?
-
Ok it passsed. And thanks for instructions on burning. Still don't know what I was doing wrong before unless I downloaded the wrong file I guess.
-
Doesn't appear to be memory related
Can you post a fresh hijackthis log, if it's clean, I suggest you ensure you have all latest video/sound drivers for your computer
-
Ok I did install a new video card about two weeks ago. I didn't bother using the cd for the drivers. Instead I went directly to nvidia. Everytime I reboot though I still get the window pop up for found new hardware. I went to the site a few days ago and after trying to locate my card 6800 gt it said no updates were available if infact I did that right since it only said 6800 series.
Not sure where to go for ac97 to download any new sound drivers.
What about AVG? What should I use?

Ok I've done the following. I went back and installed the cd for nvidia and the latest drivers. Check
Now when it comes to the real tec AC97 is another story. So looking ac97 properties/driver details I noticed there is a list and a half in there most of which have 2004 as a date on them. And I went to real tec ac97 and I don't have a clue as what I need as drivers.
-
Look in your device manager
Do you have any yellow exclamation marks
When you installed the drivers for your video driver from Cd
Did you uninstall your other video drivers first, reboot then install new driver?
Is this the driver you downloaded from Nvidia?
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_169.21_whql.html (http://\"http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_169.21_whql.html\")
-
There are no yellow exclamation marks anywhere.
You list the correct driver. However, I did not remove the driver first. What I did was go to the site and downloaded the driver again and just copy it over. In that process the window popped up again saying found new hardware and to use the disk. I installed the disk and ran it and it completed down loading the driver again.
Now I was also looking in my add and remove just now to find that there are 2 flashmenu showing and two java showing java 6 update 3 and java 6 update 5
-
Does the game play now??
supply an uninstall list from Hijackthis
Open Hijackthis>>Open MISC TOOLS SECTION>>Open UNINSTALL MANAGER
Click the SAVE LIST... button
Save the list to your desktop then copy>>Paste back here the Whole contents
-
No sir its not working. This is what happens. I load up Steam and everything is ok. But as soon as I bring the menu up to either the friends list or game list I'll hear a small click sound and the red light stays on and then everything freezes. Occationally it will let me game if I switch to a game real fast.
I've submitted questions in Steam support but there for ever and a day to answer anything and there usually no help.
I might have no other choice but to remove Steam all together and reinstall and give that a try on the chance its a corrupted file in the loading. I hate to do that since I will probably lose my entire profile for Call of duty4 and have to start all over. I'm pretty sure we've done just about everything we can do on this end unless you have any other idea's.

Did you purposely install flashmenu?
If not remove it
Also, in add/remove programs
Remove the older version of Java
Javaâ„¢ 6 Update 3
Here's what you may want to try and see if it's any help
Go to the following link and download the latest Nvidia driver to desktop
But do not install it yet
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_169.21_whql.html (http://\"http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_169.21_whql.html\")
Disconnect the internet cable from the back of you computer
go into add/remove programs and remove NVIDIA Drivers
Reboot the computer
Back in Windows, if you get new hardware found prompt, just cancel it
Then install latest drivers from desktop
reboot the computer
Connect back to the internet
If screen resolution on your computer is set higher than 1024x768
Set to that resolution
Right click on desktop>>Select properties>Settings tab
Check your Windows firewall, ensure your allowing all of HL to access
Go into Windows firewall in control panel>>Exceptions tab
Is all of HL allowed?
Temporarily disable Windows Defender's protections
Open Windows Defender.
Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
Try Steam again, any luck?
-
I'll give it a try. Glad I waited.
-
Sigh, after loading steam and then trying to play it locked up. hmmmm now what?
-
You could ensure you have the latest sound driver
Go to the following link and download the latest

Should use download location beside
Windows 98Gold/98se/Me/2000/XP/2003(32/64 bits) for Driver only. For Windows 98 SE, DirectX®8 is required to enable advanced features. (Executable file)
Save to desktop
Again, disconnect from Internet
Uninstall Realtek AC'97 Audio from add/remove
reboot
Install latest
reboot again to ensure everything is running properly
any luck?

Little bit of a problem with those mirror sites download the ac97 driver. It timed out.
-
ok it finally down loaded the driver. Now in add and remover its just calling it real tec ac97 audio. Its not saying its a driver.
Now prior to all that I did go into add and remove and clicked on Steam amd it gave me an option to repair. I tried it. Well, it didn't run all the way. But when I reboot it does load up on start up which it hadn't done in a long time. After it ran some a window pops up and wants me to hit ok for a destination file. I hit it but it just keeps tossing a file across going nowhere.
Whats your take on that?

I am really baffled now. I removed steam completly from my computer.
Re-installed.
Same problem:(
-
Yah, I'm not that big of a Steam fan, so I'm not going to install it to see what problems may be
You may have better luck at the Steam forums
Sorry you try out the audio drivers?

Here's what I said??
Uninstall Realtek AC'97 Audio from add/remove

No problem.
I'm just so frustrated. And even though the memtest passed I'm gonna start pulling sticks of ram out one at a time. Is there any other hardware tests I can try? ie motherboard, hard drive.
-
Wow!
Found the problem boss. Memory. What I don't understand is why the memtest86.iso failed to pick up on that.
And dang it all if I didn't delete Steam and lose all my profile for COD4.
/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' /> Oh well I did back up the file and also made a copy of my profile. Just not sure once I get it all loaded up if it will work. With my luck it won't. Man if I didn't have bad luck I wouldn't have any at all.

Good work Mr. Bell, it may not be that the Ram is bad, but the 2 or more sticks may not be compatible and causing problems
I totally forgot about your AntiVirus, did you reinstall AVG?

No I haven't reinstalled AVG cause when I went to the site I didn't see any free version just the trial n.
ok with 1 gig of ram I was able to get on the game a litle bit. But when I logged off it frose once again.
Is there anyway you would be able to look at a msinfo32.info to see if there are any conflicts showing. Reason I ask is Steam responded finally and mentoned that. I would need to up load it to you.
-
Here's the link to the free AVG
http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Fre...cdlpid=10760089 (http://\"http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10320142.html?part=dl-AVGAntiVir&subj=dl&tag=button&cdlpid=10760089\")
Just delay a bit on installing it, watch what you download however
If your getting help finally at the Steam forums
Why not post them the info for msinfo32??
Go to START>>RUN>>type in
msinfo32.exe

I did sir. It will probably be days before I hear anything from Steam. But I'll hold off on things and let you know.
