Hi, I got infected with win32.p2p-worm.alcan.a when I downloaded something from limewire. Ad-aware found this worm, and after i removed it, it continued to be found every time i performed a scan.
In my C:\Documents and settings\michelle(otherwise "owner")\shared folder, thousands of zip files appear. I just got done deleting over 18,000. They appear to be program zip files. I think this is linked to the virus.
I've tried finding a solution to getting rid of this virus but I find that this requires some expertise. I'd appreciate any help anyone could offer. Thanks.

So when I ran combofix my icons and task bar disappeared. When it was done with the scan, the log popped up, but my icons and taskbar never came back, so I had to force my computer to shutdown. Combofix said that my clock settings were changed, but that after the scan its normal settings would be reset... but it hasn't reset. Right now it's military time, and I don't see an option to make it go back to normal time. I'm sure there's probably some simple solution to this, and it's probably right under my nose, but I don't know how to change it back.
-
nevermind i figured it out!
-
Did you leave Spybot's Teatimer enabled during the fixes?
I would hope you wouldn't as it can interfere
I see this entry in your combofix log
G:\Autorun.exe
It may be related to a Flash drive infection
Can you do me a favor
If you have a USB Flash drive or similiar
whatever it is that represents your G: drive
Can you insert to your computer, but HOLD DOWN the SHIFT key on your keyboard when inserting so it Won't Autostart
Afterwards,
go to this link
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html (http://\"http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html\")
Copy and paste the following bold line to the space next to 'Upload a File'
G:\Autorun.exe
Then use the SEND FILE button
Let it finish scanning
Could you post back the results this scan back here please
-
When I did the scans I didn't have anything in my USB ports besides maybe my printer. After you mentioned the G drive
I checked "my computer" and there was no G drive. But I hooked up my external harddrive to do what you said and
this was the result of the scan:
0 bytes size received / Se ha recibido un archivo vacio
I also tried putting in my thumb drive and the result was the same.
I did go into spybot and unchecked teatimer before I ran combofix. When my computer restarted, I saw that the teatimer process was running,
and opened spybot, and it was checked again. So I don't know what the deal is with that.
-
Please disable TeaTimer once again, then download the [color=\"red\"]OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer[/color] (http://\"http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt2.exe\")[/url].
- Save it to your desktop.
- Right-Click on OTMoveit2.exe on desktop and select Run As Administrator
- Copy the file paths below to the clipboard in BLUE by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
==============================================================================
[color=\"#0000FF\"]C:\WINDOWS\system32\rar.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\BTCPatcher.exe
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer\run\\System Patcher[/color]
==============================================================================
- Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List Of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the [color=\"yellow\"]yellow[/color] bar) and choose Paste.
- Click the red [color=\"red\"]Moveit![/color] button.
- Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
OTMoveIt would of created a log at this location
C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log
I'll need to see it later
I see no installed AntiVirus on this computer
I suggest that you install one of these free versions
ONLY INSTALL ONE
AVG 7 by Grisoft (http://\"http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5\")
OR
Avast Home Edition by ALWIL (http://\"http://www.avast.com/eng/down_home.html\")
OR
Avira AntiVir Personal Edition Classic (http://\"http://www.free-av.com/antivirus/allinonen.html\")
Each has a Free version
Once installed, ensure it is updated and run a complete scan of your system
Including your external drives
When done, reboot the computer
Leave your new AntiVirus installed
Come back here and post a fresh hijackthis log and let me know how things are running please
Also post the log from OTMoveit
Edit>>I modified the instructions with OTMoveIt a bit, if you have already started, not to worry, we'll deal with the changes later
-
Here are the results of OTMoveit:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\rar.exe moved successfully.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\BTCPatcher.exe moved successfully.
< HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer\run\\System Patcher >
Registry value HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer\run\\System Patcher deleted successfully.
OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer - Version 1.0.4.1 log created on 04082008_220414
I'm downloading Avast Home edition right now. As soon as I get to run it and do a scan I'll send you a fresh hijackthis log.
Thanks so much for all your help.

I don't know why but teatimer starts all by itself, and even though I uncheck it when I go back to it after my computer has restarted, it is rechecked...

Can you explain to me please the EXACT steps your trying to disable TeaTimer
Just in case
Also, Please supply an uninstall list from Hijackthis
Open Hijackthis>>Open MISC TOOLS SECTION>>Open UNINSTALL MANAGER
Click the SAVE LIST... button
Save the list to your desktop then copy>>Paste back here the Whole contents
-
Okay, so I open spybot. It's in the advanced mode. And I click on "tools" then click "resident." I uncheck "resident teatimer" and then I close spybot. So if I open it again, and click tools, then resident, teatimer will still be unchecked. It becomes checked again when my computer has been restarted.
Should I just uninstall spybot?
Here is the uninstall list:

I don't know what this is, but it pops up for a split second every couple minutes. I've only noticed it for the past couple days. I was hoping you might know what it is.
-
I'm not sure what that Icon in the Start bar is related too
I don't know what this is, but it pops up for a split second every couple minutes. I've only noticed it for the past couple days. I was hoping you might know what it is.
when it shows in the task bar, can you right click on it and select ABOUT
Will it give information
If not, can you open Task Manager and see what runs every couple of minutes?
I am going to suspect smARTupdate
In add/remove programs, but that's only a suspicion
Since this has happened since the last few days, can you remember ANY software you updated or installed?
-
I do have smartupdate actually. I'm unable to click on it because it comes and goes way too fast, and I can't catch it in task manager. It's literally there for just a split second.
The only things I've installed are the things you've told me to install.
So how was the hijackthis uninstall list?
Should I do anything else with the infections avast found?
And what about teatimer? Should I uninstall spybot?
-
Can you do the following
Not sure why TeaTimer won't disable
Can you close it down again, then uninstall it fro Add/remove programs
Reboot the computer
Back in windows, uninstall smartupdate
Reboot the computer, does the icon show by the clock?
-
icon is gone now, thanks, it was pretty annoying.
So how is my virus situation? Am I all set? Can I remove the viruses avast found?
-
Yes, you can enter Avast virus chest and remove everthing in there
In addition, you should also do the following
Go to START>>All Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>System Restore
Select>>Create a New restore point
Give it a name, any name,
and click Create
Windows will prompt when it was created successfully
When that's done
Go to START>>RUN>>type the following
cleanmgr
Hit OK
Let if finish calculating
Select the More Options tab
and click Cleanup.. under 'System Restore'
This will clear all later restore points except for the one you just made
Ok the prompts, it may take a few seconds to remove old restore points
Ok again after it's ready and let it finish cleaning
Go to START>>RUN>>copy then paste the next entry in bold
ComboFix /u
Then hit OK
This will uninstall combofix
You should remove all older versions of Sun Java, keep only the latest
Access your Add/remove programs and with all browser windows closed Remove
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
Javaâ„¢ 6 Update 2
Javaâ„¢ 6 Update 3
Javaâ„¢ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
Leave ONLY
Javaâ„¢ 6 Update 5 installed
You can also open Malwarebytes Anti-malware and open the Quarantine section and removal all
Optionally, Uninstall Malwarebytes from add/remove
Or leave it installed and occassionally update and run a scan
Go to START>>RUN>>type the following
cleanmgr
Hit OK
Let if finish calculating
Select the More Options tab
and click Cleanup.. under 'System Restore'
This will clear all later restore points except for the one you just made
Ok the prompts, it may take a few seconds to remove old restore points
Ok again after it's ready and let it finish cleaning
OTMoveIt2
- Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
- Click the Cleanup! button
A list will be downloaded>>Allow it Internet access if prompted by your Firewall
Don't change anything in this list
- Select Yes at the prompt
Wait for the confirmation box to open to reboot the computer
Don't mouseclick during the wait as you may cause the tool to stall
- Select Yes to reboot Now
NOTE: This procedure will also delete OTMoveit.exe from desktop
I suggest that you add SpywareBlaster to your protection software
SpywareBlaster by JavaCool (http://\"http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html\") *Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates
After updating, select "Protection Status" on the Left
Then select "Enable all Protection"
"Check for updates every couple of weeks"
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"
You can go ahead and reinstall Spybot 1.5.2.20 from
HERE (http://\"http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Spybot_Search_and_Destroy/1043809773/1\")
Since you had trouble with the TeaTimer, you may want to uncheck that option when installing
But keep all other defaults
In addition, utilize the Immunzation of Spybot
After every update, click on IMMUNIZATION>>Immunization at the top green cross
To that after every update
Occassionally, after updating, Check for problems and remove everything in RED
Hope that helps

oh my goodness! I caught the icon popping up again! I wish I knew what it was...
And OTMoveit isn't working for me for some reason, even though I leave it alone and don't touch my computer, it kinda just freezes and does nothing.
-
So when it pops up, can you right click on it and select ABOUT and see what it's related too
Are you checking your email at the same time this is happening?
Can you ensure you close down what you don't need running in Task Manager
and see what it may be related too?
-
I kept outlook express open and watched and it makes the icon pop up when outlook sends/receives (I have it set to do it automatically every couple minutes). It never did that before and I can't remember doing an update or anything. But anyways, now that I know what it is, I think I'm all set.
But OTMoveit still isn't working...
-
Going back to your screenshot you posted
(http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h228/mchll9898/icon.jpg)
The icons in your system tray
The 2 set by Avast are the round icons with the
i and the a
If you don't want the i visible
Just right click on it and merge it with the main icon
Ensure you have registered your free copy of Avast
Which includes copy>>pasting the license key emailed to you into Avast
When your version expires, in about 14 months, no need to reinstall
Just reregister, and copy>paste new license key emailed
Can you do me a favor
Can you delete your copy of OTMoveit2.exe on desktop
Then RIGHT CLICK On the AVAST (a) icon by the clock and
Temporarily STOP ON ACCESS PROTECTIONS
OK the prompt
Then redo this step
download the [color=\"red\"]OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer[/color] (http://\"http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt2.exe\")[/url].
- Save it to your desktop.
If it still won't work, don't worry, we'll manually delete folders/files
If you didn't get a prompt to reboot
and/or OTMoveIt2 still won't run the Cleanup
Go back and START ON ACCESS PROTECTIONS
Note>The protections should reenable after a reboot, but double check that they're running
I kept outlook express open and watched and it makes the icon pop up when outlook sends/receives (I have it set to do it automatically every couple minutes). It never did that before and I can't remember doing an update or anything. But anyways, now that I know what it is, I think I'm all set.
Silly me, it makes sense now why you see that Icon
It's probably Avast Internet email scanner
If you DOUBLE CLICK on the Avast a icon by the clock
The On-Access Scanner window opens
Click on MORE DETAILS
Under the Installed Scanners list
Highlight "Internet Mail"
Then select "Customize" on the right hand side
Click on the ADVANCED tab
You should see a selection "Show tray icon when scanning mail"
You can leave it selected or unselected, your option
-
i did what you said, but OTMoveit still isn't working. So what files should I remove?
-
Thanks for retrying the automatic removal with OTMoveit2
From desktop, manually delete OTMoveIt2.exe
Also remove
ComboFix.exe
Find and delete these folders
C:\Qoobox
C:\_OTMoveIt
If you haven't done the remainder of the instructions in Post #21, do so now
If everything is running ok, let me know, I'll lock this topic
-
I can't find either of those files... maybe OTmoveit worked and just didn't show me the results?
Anyways, thanks so much for all your help. My computer seems to be virus free. My shared folder isn't flooded with thousands of zip files. I owe it all to you. Thanks!
