Title: Computer freezing when trying to capture
Post by: mengskx on May 19, 2008, 06:21:10 PM
I want to capture videos using Pinnacle Studio 8 the program I've been using for 5 years. The problem is the program freezes on my new computer when trying to capture, not only Pinnacle but other software programs that capture. In short, the capture button on any program freezes my computer, but I can edit videos.

I'm really not sure what the problem can be, maybe others have an idea
My suspicions>> Drivers for Video card,etc.. outdated

Incompatible video card
Outdated software eg>> (Pinnacle Studio 8)

You have no info on your system

Eg.. Operating system, amount of RAM
Video card and internal ram

What's running in the background

It may be best if you just give us some general info on your system

I'm not sure what you need cause I don't know what the specs mean, but I did the dxdiag command and tested my driver and looked for update and my driver but said I had the current version. I tried to capture when my computer was new before I made a mess of it but I'll give the hijack list and I'll defrag now.

I don't see anything malicious, but just to ensure, can you try the following
Delete your copy of Hijackthis

Then do the following
Download Hijackthis Installer from HERE (http://\"http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe\")
For an alternate download location, you can try HERE  (http://\"http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/HijackThis/1071179190/1\")
SAVE it to your desktop
Double click on HJTInstall.exe to run it
Choose Install

Hijackthis v2.0.2 will open
Close it afterwards, we have an updated version if we need it

Afterwards:
Download Deckard's System Scanner (dss.exe) (http://\"http://deckard.geekstogo.com/dss.exe\") to your desktop.
Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open; main.txt, which will be maximized and extra.txt, which will be minimized.

Post back just the Whole contents of Main.txt and Extra.txt

Title: Computer freezing when trying to capture
Post by: guestolo on May 21, 2008, 10:26:06 PM
I'm honestly not seeing a problem with your logs
But we could do some cleanup, just to ensure nothing interfering

Access your Add and Remove programs and remove all older versions of Sun Java
Ensure that you close your browser windows down ahead of time

This includes:

Try capturing, any luck?
I wouldn't think so, but just check to ensure

Your video drivers are a bit out of date, could use updating properly from ATI!
This means downloading new drivers from ATI
Disconnect from Internet
Uninstall old ones from add and remove programs
Reboot the computer
Install new ATI drivers
Edit>>Afterwards:Then reconnect to the Internet

I did everything but still the same problem. It really has to be the hardware since this has been a problem from day 1 and no updates have helped, don't you think? I don't know what to do now, I don't know why one function of my computer would be faulty. Any suggestions?

I'm not much into Video editing or capturing
But If you are sure you tried the latest drivers

Can you try a clean boot of the machine
This is just a test

From the Microsoft link
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353 (http://\"http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353\")
Manual steps to perform a clean boot in Windows XP
Quote
Step 1: Start the System Configuration Utility
Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.

The System Configuration Utility dialog box appears.
Step 2: Configure selective startup options
1.   In the System Configuration Utility dialog box, click the General tab, and then click Selective Startup.
2.   Click to clear the Process SYSTEM.INI File check box.
3.   Click to clear the Process WIN.INI File check box.
4.   Click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
5.   Click the Services tab.
6.   Click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box.
7.   Click Disable All, and then click OK..
8.   When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer.

Back in Windows
Try Capturing, any problems?
If no, then it may be background tasks, processes running that are interrupting

Be sure to go back to the
Steps to configure Windows to use a Normal startup state from the Microsoft link after you have tested

What source are you trying to capture from?
Do you see it in Preview before attempting the Capture?

Still not working. I cant get a preview, once I hit the button to get to the capture screen it freezes.
Capture Error (http://\"http://mengsk42.tripod.com/imagelib/sitebuilder/misc/show_image.html?linkedwidth=actual&linkpath=http://mengsk42.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/capture-error.jpg&target=tlx_new\")
I've tried 3 programs and they all freeze at the same spot.
I'm connected through a firewire.

I'll see if I can grab an image from a video.
Failed. I cant grab an image from a live video either. I am allowed to edit existing videos and watch them in the preview screen.
My computer isn't frozen though, the video capturing program isn't responding but I can go on the internet and use other programs.

As I mentioned, I don't use either of the programs
Windows Movie maker or Pinnacle Studio 8
I'll try looking around for a forum that specializes in these programs
Unless you asked others already?

Didnt even let me try to capture. When I installed the program the first thing it said when it launched was something about my device being abend. Then another error saying it failed and I cant see video preview.

Well, I'm not sure what to recommend from here
You may want to ask ppls. in video editing forums, they should have better knowledge than I
Or some may have experienced the same problems
I would try asking the guys/gals here
http://forum.videohelp.com/ (http://\"http://forum.videohelp.com/\")

There is a capturing forum
Give them as much detail as possible
eg.. Programs used
Computer specs

That site never responded so here is what I've tried. I installed a new Video Card and uninstalled the old one. The new card is working though I cant seem to find a good resolution I'm trying 1152x864 now, but its not clear picture, the words and everything are blurry. Anyway back to the original problem. I tested the capture again and still same result. I have zero ideas and apparently the other site did too, I'm willing to try anything.

Sorry you didn't get a response at Videohelp forums, I thought those guys would of been able to help

Why not, uninstall all programs you have installed lately for Capturing
Reboot the computer

I'm not sure if Pinnacle Studio 8 is still supported
But, Ensure you have the latest Video drivers for your card

Then try the guys/gals at that Pinnacle forums
They seem to reply to every thread posted

I just discovered something that may help you help me. Though my computer does recognize my firewire and I can select moviebox dv settings, when the firewire is plugged in and I press capture the program freezes and will only unfreeze when I unplug the firewire. I can hit the capture button all day without the firewire plugged in, obviously though I am unable to use moviebox dv settings. Another thing I'll mention is that I installed the firewire ports, none came with the computer.

Is it a PCI Firewire card you installed?
Can you shut the computer down and try another slot and see if the problem persists

Are you using a cheap Firewire cable, do you have another one around or borrow one of better quality and see if the problems persist

I bought a USB capture device (Dazzle DVD Recorder) and I was able to capture from my xbox. Now I got a new error which I  dont know if its from the program or what. I was looking in the folder where my captured videos go and making sure they worked and they did but when I go in the folder I get an error that makes me close the folder but I ignored it and clicked on another video then I got a blue screen error.
"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer."

I dont know if you need the error numbers but I wrote them down anyway.

That error looks like it may be related to your Nvidia drivers

Can you go to START>>RUN>>type in dxdiag

After it loads
Under the Display tab supply the following info, Exactly as found
Supply NAME>>VERSION>>DATE

Under the System tab supply Direct X Version:
and Page File:

Can you also
supply an uninstall list from Hijackthis
Open Hijackthis>>Open MISC TOOLS SECTION>>Open UNINSTALL MANAGER
Click the SAVE LIST... button
Save the list to your desktop then copy>>Paste back here the Whole contents

Looks as if you left WinAvi installed, I thought you tried uninstalling it and just going with Pinnacle at one time?

Also, I thought you removed your ATI card and installed a Nvidia, is this the route you definitely took?
I still see the following in your add and remove programs
ATI - Software Uninstall Utility
ATI Catalyst Control Center
ATI Catalyst Registration
ATI Control Panel
ATI Display Driver

Let me know the above, we might have to resort to a drive cleaner if you didn't uninstall all drivers properly

I didn't get any messages from ATI when I restarted my computer this time.

Someone from the videohelp forum suggested this:
"Your captured file is probably corrupted which causes troubles for the preview (if u know what i mean) you have to disable this option but i can't remember how now.Google is your friend.

edit:
i remember now (because i have noted it somewhere laugh.gif )

go to: start>run & type in: REGSVR32 /U SHMEDIA.DLL

hopefully that'll solve your problem"

I feel a little iffy that you have a corrupt install of your Nvidia drivers
Can you try the following

Download Drive Cleaner Pro>>Save this zip file
From the following link
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=745#download (http://\"http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=745#download\")
Extract the contents to it's own folder on desktop
Then Install it
Don't run it yet

Redownload the drivers for  your Video card from the following link and save them too desktop
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_175.16_whql.html (http://\"http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_175.16_whql.html\")
Again, don't install them yet

Print the rest of these instructions, or save them to a text file on desktop for reference

Disconnect the Internet Cable from the back of your computer, leave it disconnected till we have finished the new installation of your Nvidia drivers

Access your Add and remove programs,
Remove "NVIDIA Drivers"
Allow them to uninstall completely
Afterwards, it's important that you than reboot your computer into SAFE MODE
Once you are in safe mode, please continue with the following

In safe mode
Open Device manager and  uninstall any reference to Nvidia or ATI
Don't reboot the computer
Open Drive Cleaner pro from the shortcut on desktop

Put a tick in "Select Multiple Cleaning Filters"
Tick the following
--In the drop down menu select anything to do with ATI then click the ADD button
Continue till you have all ATI selections added
Then do the same with ONLY the Nvidia selection
After you have added all ATI and the Nvidia selection click START
YES to the prompt

When done, reboot the computer back to Normal windows
If you get a Hardware found message, just cancel it out, we'll install the drivers manually

After you have cancelled All hardware prompts,
Double click on the Nvidia drivers installer on desktop to install the latest drivers, follow the prompts
When successfully installed, shut down computer
Reconnect Internet cable
Restart computer

Back in Windows, reset screen resolution, etc...

Any problems afterwards?

Same blue screen?
I'm out of ideas, maybe the other threads you have going on the other forums may be able to help
But I really don't know why all the problems

You could try downloading an older archived driver for Nvidia and uninstall the driver you have and install the older one, see if that helps, besides that, I'll remind you, I'm not into Capturing or video software that much
Not sure how much I can really help???
