Title: Windows detected spyware infection
Post by: mjamic on June 24, 2008, 08:35:45 PM
Hi,

The windows icon in the lower right corner says "Your computer is infected!" every time I move my cursor over it. I'm almost positive I have spyware on my computer. I downloaded the latest version of HiJack This and scanned. Please see the log below. Any help you could provide would be appreciated. It was such a pain last time I had to reformat. Thanks.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (dss.exe) (http://\"http://deckard.geekstogo.com/dss.exe\") to your desktop.
Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open; main.txt, which will be maximized and extra.txt, which will be minimized.

Post back just the Whole contents of Main.txt and Extra.txt

Hi Guestolo,

I did as you said but when DSS gets to the "examining event log" step, it says that "the program has encountered an unexpected error." Then it gives me the option of sending a report or "don't send" to Microsoft. Is there something else I should be doing?

Thanks,
Morgan

Try the following

Download
SDFix (http://\"http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe\")
Save it to your desktop

After that
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
In Safe mode
Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)
Go to START>>My Computer>>Double click to open the C:\ folder  I'll need to see that log later

Download this file - Combofix.exe (http://\"http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe\")
Double click on ComboFix.exe to run the program

Follow the prompts
normally this fix takes anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes
After reboot
ComboFix will run again, then continue to create a log, this can take a few minutes
Let it run uninterrupted please
I'll need to see this log later

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

By default, the location of the combofix log is located at this location
C:\combofix.txt

Post the log from ComboFix
 Post the report from SDFix
 and a fresh hijackthis log

I'll look for your reply later, I'm on holidays, so I'll check back when I can

Can you do one additional step Before you run Combofix

Temporarily disable AVG protections please so it won't interfere
Open the AVG Control Center program by double clicking it's icon by the clock
Double-click on the "AVG Resident Shield" component -> deselect the "Turn on AVG Resident Shield" checkmark and save the setting.

After ComboFix has run it's course, then reenable AVG protections

Can you do me a favor, right click on dss.exe and rename it to dss.com
Try running it again

If it won't run, and still errors
Please do the following
supply an uninstall list from Hijackthis
Open Hijackthis>>Open MISC TOOLS SECTION>>Open UNINSTALL MANAGER
Click the SAVE LIST... button
Save the list to your desktop then copy>>Paste back here the Whole contents

Nope I'm happy to say everything's running smoothly. No errors or pop-ups or windows detecting spyware. The only thing I'm having trouble with is updating AVG. It keeps saying connection error when I try to update it automatically.

Also, when I run a scan using AVG I can see the trojan and a bunch of cookies that could be a possible threat. I'm pretty sure it's just showing me the quarantine files because I haven't been having any problems.

Thanks a bunch!

If everything is running better

Please do the following:
Go to START>>RUN>>Copy and paste the next bold entry

ComboFix /u
Hit OK
This will uninstall ComboFix and it's components

download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer (http://\"http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt2.exe\").
NOTE: This procedure will also delete OTMoveit.exe from desktop

I suggest that you add SpywareBlaster to your protection software
SpywareBlaster  by JavaCool (http://\"http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html\")   After installation, Check for updates
After updating, select "Protection Status" on the Left
Then select "Enable all Protection"
"Check for updates every couple of weeks"
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"
or again, click on Protection Startus>>enable all protection

Take a look at miekiemoes site with other ideas on How to prevent Malware: (http://\"http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/prevention.html\")

Stay safe  /smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

also is ur avg still messing up on the down load? you may have to totally removes all fetures and setting from your computer and download the latest avg.
http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download-avg-an...us-free-edition (http://\"http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition\")
you have have to do some automatic up dates but other than that it should fix your problem
