Hey folks, I created a 20gb partition today on my 250gb hard drive and another for the rest. I did it because most information I found said it would be a good idea to have a seperate partition for my OS. However, none of them said why? anyone want to take a crack at it?
Thanks

Security reasons, mostly. Other then that, with partitions you can have more than 1 OS.
By the way, 20gb is awfully big for a OS. I wouldn't make one over 10.

Disk partitioning is the creation of separate divisions of a hard disk.It is used to increase the speed of the computer.

windows operating system use only one hard disk partition to install os.. if u dont make partition then it wil use whole hard disk.. n if ur system crash.. then might be u need to format hard disk or reinstall the os.. n possibly data loss.. thats why create seperate partition for os.. 20gb is sufficeint..

Purposes for partitioning:
- Separation of the operating system (http://\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operating_system\") files from user files
- Having an area for operating system virtual memory (http://\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_memory\") swapping/paging (http://\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paging\")
- Keeping frequently used programs and data near each other.
- Having cache and log files separate from other files. These can change size dynamically and rapidly, potentially making a file system full.
