Title: Windows Explorer Wont Start
Post by: Shibbiness on August 20, 2008, 10:55:59 PM
Well i decided to finally delete that windows.old folder that was created when i installed vista; and it backfired. For some reason when i restarted, windows explorer was messed. I mean all i could see was black in the background, and my documents folder was there. After closing the process and reopening explorer.exe (through task manager) everything came back. But I restarted twice and the same thing happened. I dont want to have to keep doing that and something is obviously wrong, but i dont know what to do.

Im getting HJT right now, but heres a picture of what it looks like when i restart.

Thanks, Shibbz.

Hi

You have to set the default value for the windows shell setting:

In the Windows Registry (open 'regedit')
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\winlogon\

Set 'Shell' variable = 'Explorer.exe'

Quoted off another site - http://forums.microsoft.com/technet/showpo...=0&pageid=0 (http://\"http://forums.microsoft.com/technet/showpost.aspx?at=7&pageindex=0&postid=1450488&siteid=17&sb=0&d=1&at=7&ft=11&tf=0&pageid=0\")

The problem was a bit different than yours, unless yours also starts explorer.exe (except shows nothing) at start.

I've read elsewhere that this could also be a malware related problem, but as you only deleted a folder I would doubt it. Who knows /biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />.

Yea when i boot up and open task manager, Explorer.exe is already in processes. I have to end process and run it again for it to work. Also, it might be a malware related problem because i downloaded something as well. However is scanned with avg and nothing came. Btw here is the registry, i dont understand what i change here tho.

I dont see the shell string value in your registry so try this in that registry.

New -> string value -> Shell -> Double click it -> Explorer.exe for the value.

xD Already added. Halo has pretty much been banned from it though, and it's not near a computer at the moment for live.

Are your problems resolved?
I did see a problem in your HijackThis log

If you want to ensure it's clean, post a fresh log
If you figure your problems are resolved, let me know and I'll lock this topic

That log looks better, I did see this entry in your first log, but it's gone now, that's good
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Config\csrss.exe

You have Ask Toolbar installed, it may have been installed with some other software
If you don't need or use it, I suggest that you close all browser windows and uninstall it from
Programs and Features
