Title: EA Download Manager Won't Install
Post by: The_Iceman on September 15, 2008, 06:55:59 PM
If anyone can help me with this problem I would be very grateful. I bought the Pre-Load of Spore online through the EA Store a few days before the game was launched but was unable to install the Download Manager. When I try to install, it gets to the point where I specify where to install on the hard drive and then two error messages pop up.

First: "CreateCacheDir(): Couldn't grant full access to: C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\EADM\chache"

Then: "Couldn't set CachePath reg key!"

I'm using XP and tried all the suggestions customer service e-mailed to me (empty TEMP, end processes, turn off security software, run spyware scans, etc...)

Any advice would be great.

I've seen a workaround posted somewhere, I'll try and find it again
In the meantime, are you positive you are clear of malware?

Just to be safe, can you do the following please
Download Hijackthis Installer from HERE (http://\"http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe\")
For an alternate download location, you can try HERE  (http://\"http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/HijackThis/1071179190/1\")
SAVE it to your desktop
Double click on HJTInstall.exe to run it
Choose Install

Hijackthis v2.0.2 will open

Under Main Menu, Select
Do a system scan and save a Log file
A log will open in Notepad
Copy and Paste the Whole log back here to the forum----It is all important!

It appears that your running at least 3 different AntiVirus software on your computer
This is not that good, I suggest that you stick with ONLY one

Having more than one actually can cause system instabilities and decrease system performance
I've never heard of Vidéotron Security Services
Is this supplied by your ISP?

Yes, it's a variation on Freedom Anti-virus.  The reason I have AVG also is because I've had problems in the past and wanted a little more coverage.  I don't think that is what is causing my install error, because I even tried installing the EA Download Manager with all the security software turned off and I get the same error messages.  It seems most likely a Registry conflict or cache issue based on the error I received.

Okay, here's the problem
This is the troubleshooting guide for EA Games downloader
One step is disabling Security software
You have multiple security programs installed, sometimes just disabling them isn't enough

Now, here is a Note on installing AVG 8 from one of the FAQ database
Quote
Remove possible conflicting applications
If you are using an application which might be in conflict with AVG, please disable it or uninstall it completely before running the installation. In general, AVG may conflict with such application, that provides similar or same functionality as one of the AVG components. This is especially important for other programs with one or more of these features:

    * real-time protection against viruses (same as AVG Resident Shield)
    * monitoring or control of network traffic (same or similar to AVG Firewall)
    * checking or filtering of e-mails (same or similar to AVG E-mail Scanner)
    * checking of websites, web content filters (same or similar to AVG Web Shield)

I suggest that if your going to keep Freedom from your ISP
You uninstall AVG 8 then reboot your computer

Afterwards:
I also see the following in your Add and REmove programs
Authentium AntiVirus SDK - 2
Is this part of your ISP AV?

I don't think so as I see the following which are probably related
Radialpoint Security Services
RPS Ad Blocker
RPS AntiFraud
RPS AntiSpyware
RPS AntiVirus
RPS App Detector
RPS AsRealtime
RPS Backup
RPS Burn
RPS Diagnostic Utility
RPS Firewall
RPS ParentalControl
RPS Performance Tool
RPS PopupBlocker
RPS Privacy Manager
RPS RpsCore
RPS Security Cleanup
Vidéotron Security Services
Vidéotron Service Agent 1.5.13

You can check multiple other AV scanners and read FAQ and see the recommendation of installing more than one AV
Here's a quote from a reputable company
Kaspersky's
Quote
Please remove any previous Anti-Virus/ Spyware software from your computer. Failure to do so will cause system instabilities.
Kaspersky's actually does a check for incompatible software, and will prompt you to uninstall it before installing it's software

Here's a quote from the popular Avast free
Quote
Should I remove other anti-virus programs (Norton Antivirus, McAfee, AVG, Kaspersky Antivirus etc.) before installing avast!?
Answer

Yes. Using two or more antivirus programs can cause problems and the operating system may become unstable. For many products there is uninstall utility available on vendor's website.

What I was hoping is that you would decide to Only keep one AV installed and uninstall the others
Rebooting
Come back here and post a fresh hijackthis log
Then we can clean some leftovers from your log and see if that helps

Let me know what you decide

I`ll take your advice and uninstall AVG (since the Videotron Security Service is part of my cable package) when I get home from work.  However, today I received an e-mail from EA support mentioning that I should check to make sure that I`m set as admin because that may be why it says something about couldn`t grant access in the error message.

I really appreciate the help and I`ll let you know if those tips help.

Title: EA Download Manager Won't Install
Post by: The_Iceman on September 17, 2008, 06:18:07 AM
I realized that I must have already installed the EA Download Manager in the past since I downloaded the Spore Creature Creator.  So I followed the support site instructions and manually uninstalled any signs of the old installation including the registry items.  Could I have missed something which is causing a conflict

This is the latest advice EA Support sent me:

"If you have any other applications that may prevent your registry from being edited, you will need to disable them before installing the EADM."

Ok what applications might these be?(http://www.gamingsteve.com/blab/Themes/Gaming%20Steve/images/icons/modify_inline.gif)

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgssie.dll (file missing)

Remove
Javaâ„¢ 6 Update 3
We'll update this in a bit

Reboot your computer

Back in Windows
Updating Java:I would like a double check to see if there are any leftover malware residuals
download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here (http://\"http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe\") or Here (http://\"http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html\")
Save the installer to desktop

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post back all the following please

1. Post the log from MBAM
2. Post a fresh hijackthis log

Then we'll try an alternative to installing the download manager
