Access your Add and Remove Programs and remove DPS
Reboot the computer
Come back here and upload a couple more fresh logs from RSIT.exe

Sorry cwohayes
I was trying to enter your logs in a reply back here to the forum, so you wouldn't have to upload them
I'm getting an error when posting
Here's the last instructions I asked for
Can you do me a favor, close down all browser windows
Access your Add and Remove Programs and remove
DPS
Reboot the computer
Come back here and upload a couple more fresh logs from RSIT.exe
I just want to see how much is actually uninstalled this way, then we can tackle the rest of it
-

well deleting that file completely messed me up. It disabled my video cards so it's only seeing one of them, I can't access the NVIDIA control panel and my max resolution is 4 bit color and 800X600 Screen resolution. I had to run Norton restore to take the computer back 10 days to get to this point. bad stuff
-
Well, that was quite the mishaps you had to encounter
I'm sorry to hear that, it sounds as if it was almost unrelated
I hope
It appears that your Restore, may have taken you back to a time before this infection
How is everything running?

But, let's ensure, try the following please

How is everything running?
Can you run a fresh Hijackthis log and post it please
Also, remember, let me know how things are running
I checked this morning, no more popups and no intrusion attempts. The computer seems to be running ok but I haven't been on it a lot yet. That's a good thing and something I guess I should have tried rolling back in the first place. The Logs I uploaded last night are the most current after all the changes. DPS said it was a shared application. What exactly is DPS and how do I get it back? I'll be happy to upload fresh logs when I get to the computer this afternoon.

Actually, I edited my last response
The last logs were up to date and looked good
Except for a BHO which is leftover
Can you do the following
Navigate to the following folder
C:\Program Files\trend micro
Open it
Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis
You have older versions of Java installed, that are better remove than leave
We should update also to take advantage of Security fixes
Close down all browser windows
Access your Add and Remove Programs and remove the following
Java(tm) 6 Update 5
Java(tm) 6 Update 7
Java(tm) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
Reboot the machine, only after all 3 are removed
Back in Windows
Updating Java:- Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 10 (http://\"http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp\").
- Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 10".
- Click the "Download" button to the right.
- In the Window that opens, In the dropdown box Platform:select Windows,>>Check the "agree" box and click Continue.
- Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
- Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u10-windows-i586-p.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.
DPS said it was a shared application. What exactly is DPS and how do I get it back?
I don't think you want it back, quite sure it was responsible for installing the files and registry entries that were causing your popups
It's spyware/malware

ok done. attached is the latest log file. it didn't make an info file this time when I ran RSIT.

Looks good, how's everything running now?
Looks good, how's everything running now?
Well, there are no popups or virus attacks but I am still limited to only 4 bit color and a max screen resolution of 800X600. I have icons in the control panel for NVIDIA Control Panel and Desktop Manager but they don't do anything and the system only sees one of the two GTX 7800 video cards. This all happened when we removed DPS.
-
You may have to reinstall the updated video drivers
I believe this is your correct one
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_178.24_whql.html (http://\"http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_178.24_whql.html\")
You can double check under Products supported
Save the installer to desktop
Take note of the Driver Installation Hints
# "Download Accelerator" utilities should be disabled when downloading any drivers.
# Do not run virus protection software in the background while installing the drivers. This prevents the driver from configuring itself properly.
So ensure to disable your Norton Anti-Virus Autoprotect when installing
Reboot after the installation and see if it helps

Have you been in Nvidia Control panel and enable SLI mode?
Is there a selection to do this?

the SLI feature is only enabled if your computer detects the other video card and bridge. problem i have is that the computer does not see the second video card at all. I am going to try physically reinstalling the card later today and see if that works.

starting from when i only had 4 bit:
-uninstalled the video card in Control Panel
-rebooted
-my computer came up with full resolution but still only saw 1 card
-shut down, removed the bridge and powered back up
-the computer then saw both cards
-shut down and put the bridge back on
-powered up. the system then told me that i could use SLI and that option became available in NVIDIA control panel.
-drank beer, threw party

Just when I thought I was good to go... it's taking forever to shut down now, sometimes in excess of 5 minutes and it dumped the video cards again. I got the video back by shutting down and removing the bridge between the 2 cards. I am leaving it off for now. attached is the latest log file.

Can you delete the file found from Kaspersky
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\officedocs\DREW'S MUSIC\TOTALLY HIP TRACK (music).wma < file
Does it shut down quicker with the bridge off?
Any new software installed recently?
I see you installed a MagicJack
Not sure if it could be causing a problem
But besides the USB Magic Jack, anything else?
For a troubleshooting step, you could enter your Task Manager
Open the Processes tab, end process on anything not required for the system to run stable
Then try shutting down and see if it's quicker

I noticed that the problem started when I installed the Symantec Endpoint protection. I have uninstalled it and the system shuts down perfectly. I am going to try hooking the second video card back up and see how stable it is. Would you recommend the Kapersky virus protection over the Symantec/Norton variety? I have Kapersky on my Macbook Pro but I haven't used it long enough to judge.

What version of Norton's are you running?
Earlier versions were high on resources
I like Kaspersky, so I'm kind of bias to it
I don't have it installed on any of my machines right now, so it's only an opinion
If i had to purchase a product for AV solution
I think I would go with Kaspersky or NOD32 myself
But Norton's later version, is suppose to be less resource intensive
I haven't tried it myself however

I have access to the Symantec Department of Defense version of Endpoint which is free but apparently messing with my shutdown. I was using the Norton 2008 version which was fine but a subscription service. I haven't researched the Kapersky yet but I'm not fond of someone pimping me for an annual payment unless I have no other option. Guess you really get what you pay for.

Are you using this as a Personal computer?
Home or Office?
Are you willing to try a free AV?
I believe Endpoint also comes with Firewall>>Sygates?
Do you want to try and save that and go with a new AV?
Not sure if that's possible with Endpoint, I have never used it, but there is freeware that does a good job if willing
But that is your call

Personal home office computer. I have 3 PCs and 1 MacBook Pro. I'm running Norton 2009 on the home office now since I know it works with this computer, Kapersky on the Mac and I still have 2 more to unscrew. I'm more than willing to try freeware if it works.

Sorry, almost forgot about this post
Here's some recommendations for freeware
http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=15894 (http://\"http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=15894\")
Avast or Avira are pretty good Virus scanners
AVG as a third option>>On a computer with enough power, this is still a good scanner
Avast doesn't have a scheduled scanner, but you can set one up in task scheduler
I can give directions if needed
Only use one AV please
Same with Firewall software
Online Armor or Sunbelt has a good reputation, I don't have either installed at the moment

Guess we are both forgetful, the other significant problem I am having with this computer is the installation of Flash player. I have tried the download, no go, I downloaded the Zip file and installed it. control panel shows Adobe Flash 10 active X is installed but I don't see flash content. any suggestions? I'm going to try the firewall software you recommended on my third computer, the windows security center won't start so I have no firewall.

A clean uninstall of Flash is the best to try
I suggest that you try the following
Download the Flash Uninstall utility from this direct link
http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashpl...lash_player.exe (http://\"http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/current/uninstall_flash_player.exe\")
Save it to your desktop
Close down ALL browser windows and run the uninstaller
When done, reboot the computer
Back In Windows
Using Internet Explorer, navigate to the following page
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/?promoid=DXLUJ (http://\"http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/?promoid=DXLUJ\")
Untick Google toolbar installation
Then click "Agree and Install Now"
Allow the ActiveX component to run and Install
When done, it should prompt that Flash was installed
Let me know if that helps

just did that with the same results. I get the text
"When you see the installation completion movie above and text below, your installation was successful. The installation should only take a minute or two on a 56k modem" and that's it, no movie, no flash.
The computer that doesn't have the Security Center is older and would probably require a different post. I ran a malware scan as you directed in an earlier post and found 46 infections which i deleted. Norton found nothing but Kaperskys found quite a few things. I am going to use one of the firewalls you suggested in the interim until i can figure out how to turn the firewall on. the Security Center screen says that the security center was turned off and to reboot (done) or turn it back on. it doesn't tell you how to turn it back on though.

Does Symantec's Endpoint have any Flash blocking tool?
Can you check your Security software and ensure nothing is blocking Flash Ads
Sorry, you may just have Norton AV and/or Firewall installed
Check it's settings to ensure adblocking is disabled

I dropped Endpoint and went back to Norton Antivirus 2009. I have checked everything i can think of. i enable popups on the Google toolbar and followed the instructions on the Flash website. I have the setup the same on all of my computers and this one is being stubborn. by the way, I started a new forum for the 3rd computer. I ran multiple scanners on it and put up one of the free firewalls you recommended. Just need a look at the log file; at least until you tell me it has some sort of horrible doomsday virus embedded in it....

Can you try the following please
Try another browser
Download and install Firefox 3
From this link
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ (http://\"http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/\")
After you install it
Can you go to this link in Firefox

Save the installer to desktop
Close Firefox then run the installer
It will only take a few seconds to install
Afterwards, delete the flash installer
Reopen Firefox, try Flash sites
any luck with Firefox?

questions, is Firefox going to interfere with or mess up Explorer? is there a problem having 2 browsers resident on the computer? Am I going to uninstall Firefox once i determine if I have Flash up and working? should I uninstall Flash prior to installing it in Firefox?
-
No, Firefox will not interfere with IE
When installing if it prompts to become default browser, Select NO and have it not prompt again
You will see the selection
Consider Firefox a backup browser
and a bit safer for browsing
Don't uninstall Flash again
Just follow the instructions to install Flash in Firefox
It will be up to you to keep or lose Firefox later, personally, it's all I use
and seldom open IE
But that's my preference

Done, Flash Player works in Firefox
-
I would try all these steps again, just a triple check to ensure Flash gets installed correctly
Plus we're going to add in a couple steps
First, download the Flash ActiveX Installer for IE
From this link, you may have done this before, but let's try it all again
http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/t..._10_ActiveX.zip (http://\"http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/ts/documents/tn_19166/Install_Flash_Player_10_ActiveX.zip\")
Save this and Unzip it to it's own folder on desktop
Don't run it yet
Download again the Flash Installer for Firefox from this direct link
http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flash...lash_player.exe (http://\"http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe\")
Save to desktop, but Don't install it yet
Download and save the Flash uninstaller from this direct link
http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashpl...lash_player.exe (http://\"http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/current/uninstall_flash_player.exe\")
Don't run it yet
Some sites, while viewing Flash, need Java to go hand in hand
I know we just updated your Java, but as there was another recent update
Can you do the following
- Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 (http://\"http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp\").
- Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11".
- Click the "Download" button to the right.
- In the Window that opens, select Windows,>>Check the "agree" box and click Continue.
- Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
Don't run the installer yet
One more step
Download and Save to desktop JavaRa.zip
http://internap.dl.sourceforge.net/sourcef...vara/JavaRa.zip (http://\"http://internap.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/javara/JavaRa.zip\")
Unzip it to it's own folder on desktop
Please do the following
Open the extracted JavaRa folder and double click on JavaRa.exe to run it
In the drop down box select your language>>English

When done, you can delete this folder
Then run the Flash installer for Firefox, ensure firefox is closed
You can delete the installer when complete
See if that helps
I would try all these steps again, just a triple check to ensure Flash gets installed correctly
Plus we're going to add in a couple steps
First, download the Flash ActiveX Installer for IE
From this link, you may have done this before, but let's try it all again
http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/t..._10_ActiveX.zip (http://\"http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/ts/documents/tn_19166/Install_Flash_Player_10_ActiveX.zip\")
Save this and Unzip it to it's own folder on desktop
Don't run it yet
Download again the Flash Installer for Firefox from this direct link
http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flash...lash_player.exe (http://\"http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe\")
Save to desktop, but Don't install it yet
Download and save the Flash uninstaller from this direct link
http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashpl...lash_player.exe (http://\"http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/current/uninstall_flash_player.exe\")
Don't run it yet
Some sites, while viewing Flash, need Java to go hand in hand
I know we just updated your Java, but as there was another recent update
Can you do the following
- Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 (http://\"http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp\").
- Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11".
- Click the "Download" button to the right.
- In the Window that opens, select Windows,>>Check the "agree" box and click Continue.
- Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
Don't run the installer yet
One more step
Download and Save to desktop JavaRa.zip
http://internap.dl.sourceforge.net/sourcef...vara/JavaRa.zip (http://\"http://internap.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/javara/JavaRa.zip\")
Unzip it to it's own folder on desktop
Please do the following
Open the extracted JavaRa folder and double click on JavaRa.exe to run it
In the drop down box select your language>>English
Then click Select
Select "Remove Older versions"
Yes to the prompt, If you have IE open, close it and follow the prompts
Afterwards: Click the "Additional tasks" button
Put a tick next to the following
"Remove useless JRE Files"
and "Remove Sun Download Manager"
and that's it
Then click Go
Follow the prompts
When done exit out of there
Access your Add and Remove Programs
Ensure all browser windows are closed and remove
Javaâ„¢ 6 Update 10

When done, you can delete this folder

Done, I have Flash in Firefox and not in IE. Firefox is pretty cool by the way.

I uninstalled the google toolbar first, then uninstalled flash, reinstallled flash, got an error message, retried. there was a text window that popped up too quickly to see what it said then it continued with the installation process. no flash. i tried again and still see that popup for a brief second but no go. any way to get that window to stay open?

Do you know what that error message was?
If your positive that Norton's is not blocking ActiveX controls from running
or any other security software
It may be the permissions got messed up
We can try another step, but let me know if you know what that error message was

I can't even tell if it's an error message. it comes and goes so quickly that you can't even see any text, just the briefest flash of a rectangle. I would think if Norton was causing problems then Flash wouldn't work in Firefox would it?

If you have ActiveX content disabled in any Security tools
or in IE's security settings, it will disable the flash content

I have checked and checked again and I can't find anything that would be blocking Flash or Active X. Want to give up?

I would like to add a twist to the flash installer
First, I noticed an orphaned entry in your Hijackthis log
If the following entry is still around, let's clear it
Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:
O2 - BHO: Tunebite_WebRipPlugin Class - {AA102584-3B97-47e7-B9BC-75D54C110A7D} - C:\Program Files\RapidSolution\Tunebite\plugins\IE\TB_WebRipIePlugin.dll (file missing)
After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis
Reboot the computer
Try Flash in IE, does it work?
Probably not, but try anyways
Could you post a fresh Hijackthis log afterwards
In addition, In IE
Can you click on TOOLS>>MANAGE ADDONS>>ENABLE OR DISABLE ADDONS
In the drop down list beside SHOW
Can you run through the list (All 4 areas) and see if ANY Addons or ActiveX controls are Disabled
If so, which ones
Also, you said this earlier
the windows security center won't start so I have no firewall
What do you mean by that, when you try to start Security Center, what happens?
Any error messages?

Gee, can you guess what the one disabled add-on might have been??? How would that have happened? I've never looked at the add-on drop down before. Flash works perfectly, well done.
The Security Center problem is on the computer with only Service Pack 1 installed. I downloaded one of the firewalls and antivirus programs you recommended so I'm not going to lose sleep over it unless you just can't resist another challenge?

Well that's your problem, I think the Security Center was introduced in Service Pack 2
Why haven't you updated yet?
