Desktop>>Laptop?
Operating system?
Are you going to post back?
Have you considered disabling Hibernation and Screen Saver options
And just have the monitor shut down after a 5 minute interval?

If I let my computer run too long the fan starts to make a loud noise it's an old gateway desktop I have to leave the sleep feature on the fan gets too loud

it's an old gateway desktop
How old?
What's the spec's of this desktop?
Is it Vista compatible?
Have you checked the advanced settings of the power options and altered the sleep options?

Could it be that you have installed Vista into this poor machine? Uninstall it ASAP, lol.
Needing that sleep feature on seems to me like a temporary patch for a real overheating problem.
Vista is a resource hog, and it seems your pc wont last very long running it, from the way it sounds.
Either you downgrade to XP or get a new pc, which is much less of a headache than actually trying to troubleshoot this problem, because in my opinion we would have to begin from .. "what are the specs of your motherboard?" e.t.c.
cheers.
