Title: Can't burn DVD's
Post by: mickapoo on January 17, 2009, 09:36:59 AM
I'm trying to burn some files, some images and a movie onto a DVD-R. I'd like to be able to play them on my home DVD player, if possible, if not, no biggie.

When I want to burn a cd, I don't use any program, I just go to Windows Explorer, find the file, right click, and select "send to" and then select the cd/dvd drive. And it burns it automatically.

I've tried doing that but with a dvd-r in the drive, and I get an error message that says, "Windows encountered a problem when trying to copy this file. What do you want Windows to do?" then it has cancel and retry. It's just a 67k picture and a 3mb movie that I'm trying to burn. Neither one works.

I'm running Windows XP, home edition.

I didn't post a hijackthis log because I didn't know if it was necessary for this.

Thanks for your help!

Instead of trying the drag and drop method within Explorer
Do you have any Burning software installed other than built in?

Yes, sorry, I added this but I guess my edit didn't go through. I have Cheetah. I was looking for a freeware product and that is how I came about it.

Thanks!

Alright, I've never used Cheetah, didn't realize they had a free product, or is it trial?
I take it you can burn with it successfully?

No. It (Cheetah) said it was burning, and then it said it was done, but when I checked the dvd it didn't have anything on it.

Thanks,

I'm trying to burn movies that are mpg's, and also some jpg images. My main purpose was just to burn these files on dvd so I can store more as opposed to burning them onto a cd. But I also thought if I could watch the movies on a dvd player, that would be ideal.

Re AVI format, I'm not sure. How would I go about finding out? Searched my manual and it didn't mention it.

Thanks again.

what Make/model of home DVD player do you have?

You may have to convert the files, but if you just want a backup
Record as Data, ensure to finalize disc

I've never used Cheetah, so I can't help with it's recording setup

You can right click on a file and select Properties to ensure it's extension

Firstly, those files are too small to burn on a high capacity medium like dvd.
You will encounter error messages. For files that small i would advice to burn it on a CDR.
(it might still not let you, so get your trusty flash drive /smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />)

lol its like a waste of the computers time to put 3mb into a 4GB space.
Thats like, ridiculous.  /biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />

Secondly, even if you get the 3mb movie into the dvdr disc you wont be able to play it on your dvd player,
because the movie will not be recognized as a dvd format.

cheers mate.

I have a Sony DVP-NS57P.

What should I use to record the data onto a DVD? I've tried both right clicking and sending the files to the DVD drive, and I receive a Windows error. Then when I tried Cheetah, that didn't work either. Is there an alternate way to burn the data files (both jpg and mpgs) onto a DVD?

Upon right clicking, the videos are mpg format and the images are jpgs.

Thank you.

As far as I know, there are no stipulations requiring a specific file size in order to burn them onto a DVD.

It isn't ridiculous- who said those were the only files I wanted on there?? The whole reason I want to have them on a DVD is because of the 4GB space- that way I can add files to it every month and won't finalize it until I'm done. Normally one of my images alone will be high res and of very high file size.

Again, I never used Cheetah, if it's a free version
Why not try uninstall it
Reboot the computer afterwards

Try the next free burning software
Go to the following link
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/burningstudiofree.html (http://\"http://www.snapfiles.com/get/burningstudiofree.html\")

Download and install Ashampoo Burning Studio Free

Once installed, pop in a blank DVD
Close down any autostart
Open Ashampoo
Click on "Burn Files and Folders"
Create a new DVD Disc
Add the files to your compilation
Before writing check out the Write Options
Don't use Finalize Disc, until you have updated your disc to full status
When adding new files, you will see the option to "Update and Existing Disc"
When done updating you should be able to Finalize, makes it compatible with other DVD players
if they support the extension

It worked perfectly! Thanks! So I won't be able to view it on a DVD player unless I finalize it? I'm not sure about what extensions they support,  perhaps it is in my manual or online.

Thank you soooo much!
