Title: Unable to install win xp
Post by: Arpan on May 30, 2009, 02:35:48 PM
I wanted to install win xp on my desktop but machine is not allowing me to boot from cd.

I have tried ordering boot sequence in many different ways, some cd/dvd option first and sometime last out of 3 possible ones.
But in none if the cases it gave the option to "press any key to boot from cd".

I have recently installed new dvd-rw and after that machine is not giving me above mentioned option. I have never faced such problem with my old dvd drive.

comp spec:
Processor: intel pentium 4 2.0 GHz
RAM: 1 GB
Motherboard: mercury kob 845gl ndsmx

Can anyone identify the reason why this is happening? new dvd-rw or something else?

Your help will be highly appreciated.

No i am facing now problem with my desktop, the other computer, which seemd to have been infected while taking backup of infected data from laptop. One of the windows file on a desktop machine got corrupted which ultimately stopped me using that copy of windows. So now i was thinking of installing fresh copy of windows. I am using my laptop now to reply.

Ok, so I take it, that log we worked on was your Laptop, correct?

When you backed up to the Pendrive, you didn't backup nothing but your Pics, did you?
You didn't backup any .exe or .scr files

Since i could see every bit of data i had that laptop, I copied data more than those  pics including few exe files on the pen drive and before taking its backup on my desktop i scanned it through avg and moved infected file to the chest.

Damn, I wish you wouldn't of backed up ANY .exe or .scr files
OK, on the laptop
Do the following:
Download and save to your desktop

Dr. Web Cureit from this link

Once it's saved to your desktop
Disable Avast protection temporarily while running this tool
Right click on Avast icon and select "Stop on access protections"

When it's been disabled
Run CureIt, the spider looking icon on the desktop
At the START>>UPDATE prompt click on START
it will run an Express scan, allow that to finish, moving/curing any infections it may find
When the Express Scan is done, select "Complete Scan"
Then click the black > to start the scan
When the scan is complete, click the button >>Select All
Then click on Cure
in addition select Move Incureable

I'll need to see a report, click on FILE>>Save Report File
Save a copy to your desktop

You can open the document with Notepad by right clicking on it and Select "Open With"
Choose to open it with NOTEPAD

Run CureIt on Laptop, let me see the results
Too confusing right now to work on both computers as your mixing both computer into 2 topics
So for now, just the log from Cureit from the Laptop

I am sorry about this mix up. My idea of starting a new topic was just because i simply wanted install windows on one of my computer
(that being a desktop, but that is not imp) and i was unable to succeed so i asked for a help. I request to again go through my first post under this topic to solve problem of booting from cd.

I am sending you the cureIt log in few minutes.

Did you do the Complete Scan?
After you start the tool. the Express scan will finish, when it's done, you select Complete Scan
Then hit the Go button, let it finish

Did you do that?

Have you ever tried booting from CD from it before?

Are the Jumper settings correct on the back of the player?
Is the DVD drive recognized in the bios?

Does that mean you threw it out? Or do you still have possession of it?

I have installed windows multiple times before. I still have older dvd drive but i am not sure system will detect it. you want me to try it???

Jumper settings are set to master and even end side of cable is attached to it. Bios does detect  it.

Was the older drive you took out also set as Master?
When did you install the new drive? When the computer was infected?

see i had done clean installation around 17-18 of this month. After that only laptop's infected data was copied to desktop. I dont think any other malicious data was copied or anyhow entered desktop.

New windows was installed through this new drive itself. But that time also this new drive was not giving the option "press any key to boot form cd" even after setting the cd/dvd as the first boot device. fter trying multiple[20-30] time different order, somehow this option came up ans i could manage to install windows. But after that it has never given me this option.

is the new drive set as Master, just like the Old one?

I'm not sure what you mean by the following

Is that an IDE connection?

What is your boot sequence in the bios?

Can you try booting with Ubuntu or Knoppix, see if you can boot from the drive

It is an IDE connection.

I just tried connecting both old and new DVD drives together and to my strange it worked. Machine started giving me the option of
press any key to boot from cd. Can you understand the reason behind this sudden change?

new- secondary master
old - secondary slave.

Do you still need answer to other questions of the previous post?

Go ahead and clean install the machine, I'm sure you have done that now, but just checking

I'm a bit confused

Your Old player was set Secondary slave before you removed it?
Did you have anything else connected to that IDE chain before removing it?
