Title: about:blank virus- help! hijackeck homepage!

Hey, I'm new to this site. I've been researching for a few hours trying to get rid of about:blank. My CPU Usage isn't high and the only problem is that my homepage is initially about:blank until i open a new tab. its still a nuisance and i read its a security risk. I want it gone, but have no idea how to do it. I didn't want to download hijackthis and do it this way, but ive tried everything else i could find and nothing has worked so i caved and downloaded and ran it. This is what i got:

Also, I went into regedt32 and went to HKEY_COCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Wubdows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows and then ewnt into AppInit_DLLs and the value was:

C:\PROGRA~1\Google\GOOGLE~2\GOEC62~1.DLL

i looked up the location of this file everywhere on my computer and it was not to be found. i renamed the data badfile.dll (again I am not sure if this does or did anything this is the first time I've ever used the registry editor and i think i read somewhere to rename it though i may have done so incorrectly)

Also, i deleted googletoolbar because i read that may also be a problem. Also tried uninstalling Internet Explorer 8 but could not.

Any help is greatly appreciated! (also i apologize in advance because i had various windows and internet windows opened when i ran the hijackthis and i just read that can make it longer and harder to read) Thanks in advance!

Can you do the following please:
download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here (http://\"http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe\") or Here (http://\"http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html\")
Save the installer to desktop

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

• Make sure a checkmark is placed next to [color=\"#006400\"]Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware[/color] and [color=\"#006400\"]Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware[/color], then click Finish.
     
  
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
     
  
• The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
     
  
• Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
      * When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
     
  
• The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
• Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply
  

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediately.

Come back here, right click on Hijackthis and select "Do a system scan and logfile

Can I see the following
Download [color=\"#FF0000\"]OTL.exe[/color] (http://\"http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe\")[/url] by OldTimer to your Desktop.

• Close all windows and right click on OTL.exe and choose to "Run as Administrator"
• Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted.
  
• It will produce two logs for you, one will pop up - OTL.txt, the other will be saved on your Desktop - Extras.txt. Post both logs in this thread.
  
• You may need to use two posts to get it all.

Before I renamed it I copied and pasted the name somewhere and after I saw changing its name did nothing I renamed it back to its exact original name. I only tried that in the first place because I had read somewhere that might help. When it didn't I renamed it back to its original name.

And yes, it is still coming up. The problem is only on Internet Explorer. Firefox everything works fine. I would just use Firefox from now on, but I like Internet Explorer and want to get rid of this. And I'd like to keep Google Desktop, but I'm open to uninstalling it and then reinstaling it. Should I try that?

It looks as if that value for Google Desktop is still corrupt
And, Google Toolbar did not get totally removed, I also believe it's what is keeping your IE set to About:Blank

Can you do the following, Spybot's TeaTimer and/or Windows Defender may
have interfered with the removal

Please disable SpybotSD TeaTimer

To disable SpybotSD TeaTimer:

Open Spybot and click on Mode and check Advanced Mode
Check yes to next window.
Click on Tools in bottom left hand corner.
Click on Resident icon.
Uncheck Teatimer box.
Click Allow Change box if prompted
Close Spybot

Window's Defender
Open Windows Defender.
Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close
Windows Defender.

After the above is done, reboot the computer

Back in Windows
Can you use Internet Explorer and download and reinstall the Google Toolbar
After you reinstall it
Can you close all browser windows
Access "Programs and Features" from with Windows Control Panel
Uninstall the following:

Google desktop
Google toolbar for IE

Right click on Hijackthis and select to "Run as Administrator"
Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:
Note: Not all may exist, but tick the ones below I have mentioned if found

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot the computer one more time, back in Windows
Again, Right click on Hijackthis and "Run as Administrator"
Do a Fresh Scan and Save logfile and post the new log

And yes it seems to have fixed it Internet Explorer loaded and went straight to Google, the homepage I had set it to. Will I get the same problem if I reinstall Google Toolbar or Google Desktop? And what programs should I run for protection (I know many are not compatible with each other)? The ones I currently have are Spybot Search and Destroy, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, OTL, and McAfee Security Center.

it has been running perfectly. i have not re-installed google desktop or google toolbar and would like to. would that cause a problem again?

Spybot's TeaTimer can be a bit tricky, and interfere with installing or uninstalling software
If you keep TeaTimer enabled, please read it's documentation in the HELP
Here's a quote from the Help file

Quote

In addition, TeaTimer detects when something wants to change some critical registry keys. TeaTimer can protect you against such changes again giving you an option: You can either Allow or Deny the change.

So make sure you are properly Allowing or Denying any entry

With that said, you should update your version of Java, to help plug security holes that can be used by Malware to infect your system
The same goes for your version of Adobe Reader

Close down all browser windows
Access Programs and Features from the Control Panel
Uninstall the following:
Java(tm) 6 Update 5
Adobe Reader 8.1.4
After removal, OTL is not a tool you need to hold onto, it only helps with identifying entries
unless you write a script to help remove files/reg. entries etc...
Right click on OTL.exe and choose to "Run as Administrator"
Click on the CLEANUP button, if prompted by Firewall/ AntiVirus, please let this tool run
Reboot the computer at the prompt

Back in Windows

• Download the latest version of  Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 (http://\"http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp\").
  
• Scroll down to where it says "JRE 6 Update 16".
  
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
  
• In the Window that opens, select Windows, beside PLATFORM:>>Check the "agree" box and click Continue.
  
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  
• Then from your desktop right-click on jre-6u16-windows-i586.exe that you downloaded, choose "Run as Admin" to install the newest version.
  

NOTE: Java may install a Quick Starter service to run on startup which is really not needed
After installation, simply open the Java icon in Control Panel
Under Advanced tab, expand Miscellaneous, untick "Java Quick Starter" if selected
Apply and Ok it, then exit the Java control panel

You can delete the Java installer after successful installation

Update Adobe Reader
Go to the following link
http://get.adobe.com/reader/ (http://\"http://get.adobe.com/reader/\")
Download and Install the latest
NOTE: When installing, if you have the option to untick any Toolbars, etc.. they may add to the installer
Choose NOT to install any, they are not needed for the A. Reader to function properly
That really goes with any free software, if a toolbar is not needed or wanted, why install it

It should be ok to install the latest versions of Google Toolbar and Google Desktop

Everything seems to be running great. I installed Google Desktop, but did not install Google Toolbar (the only reason that was on was because I had accidentally installed it with another program. I don't really need it so I figured I should not waste time or space installing it). I have been using Mozilla Firefox and when I have had to use Internet Explorer it has worked fine.
