Hi there.
My friend's computer had loads of issues so we decided to format the hard drive and load windows xp SP3.
All is ok except for 2 things;
1. We cannot install any programs...any .msi install package comes up with the error "This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer package" error 1619.
2. We can't open Security or Firewall features in Control Panel.
I have done loads of research and have come to a halt as nothing seems to fix the problems.
I have done a validation check through microsoft.com and the OS shows up as 'genuine'. I just think something went wrong during installation and a file is missing or something.
Please help.

What directory are you installing from?
The whole location of the msi file
See if the other thread you posted too is related
Eg... C:\whatever.msi
Give the full name, simply right click the file and select properties to find location
I'm stepping out for a bit, I'll check back later

Hi again.
The .msi files were from 2 locations which is when I worked out the problem was particular to .msi
The first location is on a cd D:\ (I was trying to install a program) and the 2nd location was from the computer's own hard drive C:\. I forget what I was trying to run the 2nd time as it was during my many attempts to solve the problem using the command prompt..
Thanks

your not serious?
I asked you to right click on the file and give me the EXACT location of the msi file??
What are you trying to explain to me/?
Edit>>Maybe I'm not reading properly
So the directory your trying to install from is C:\?

The Exact location of the msi file is E:\SFDel6.0.20\DISK1
(My friend's computer was not connected before so I merely went by memory)

Can you try something, I'm not sure if this will work, but give it a shot
I'll assume your E: drive is your CD/DVD
Can you insert the disk
Close out the Autoplay prompt if you get one
Can you create a folder on your C: drive
Open MyComputer>>Local disk C:
create a folder there
then from MyComputer, right click on you E: drive and choose to Explore the disk
Can you copy/paste the whole contents of Disk1 to that newly created folder and try running the installer from that location
-
I forgot all about this
We can't open Security or Firewall features in Control Panel.
Do you get any error messages?
-
Hi again.
Managed to copy Disk 1 onto C: drive.
Cannot install from there either. Same error message."This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer package"
-
We can't open Security or Firewall features in Control Panel.
\
What happens when you try Opening Security Center or Windows Firewall
Any error messages?
-
Yes.
I opened Security through control panel.
When I click on the Windows Firewall link this error appears:
'Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection sharing service?"
I click yes and there is another error message " Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall/Internet sharing service."
I actually tried to start the service through Start/Run/ and typing services.msc
When I click on 'start' through this window I get this message ' Could not start the Security Center service on Local Computer. Error 1075. The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion.'
Thanks for your help.........

Can you try the following
Download/Save then extract to your desktop
Dial-A-Fix (http://\"http://wiki.lunarsoft.net/wiki/Dial-a-fix#Mirrors.2Fdownload_locations.2C_and_articles\")
We'll need it in a bit
Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad)
Hit OK
Copy the contents of the CODE box, not including the word "code"
Paste it to the empty Notepad file
In Notepad click FILE>>SAVE AS
IMPORTANT>>>Change the Save as Type to All Files.
Name the file as fix.reg
Save this file on the desktop
Ensure to copy from REGEDIT4 and down in the code box

Save the rest of these instructions to a Notepad file on your desktop
Close down all open applications, including any Browser windows that are open
Open Dial-A-Fix folder you extracted earlier
Double click on Dial-A-Fix.exe to run it
Click on the Hammer (Tools) icon on the bottom of the main window
Highlight Reinstall Windows Firewall then hit GO
This won't take long, when it's done
select CLOSE, then from the Main window of Dial-A-Fix
Select the GREEN (Select All) button on the bottom, then click on GO
Ensure Date/Time are correct when prompted then click OK
Let the tool continue, when it's done Close the main window
Then from the destop
Double click on fix.reg and allow to add/merge to the registry at the prompt
Reboot your computer
Back in Windows, try opening Windows Firewall in Control Panel
Also try Security Center
Let me know if there is any improvement

Hi there.
Firstly I saved contents of the Code Box as Rtf file type cos there was no "All Files" option (is this still ok?).
Next I had problems with opening Dial-A-Fix.
When I opened the zipped file this is the error message...."Unexpected end of archive"
And when I clicked on the Dial-a-fix.exe file there was another error message "the archive is either missing or damaged. Cannot execute Dial-A-Fix.exe"
Thanks

No, it's not OK!
Did you read my instructions?
Sounds like you have WordPad open and not Notepad>>Use Notepad
Concerning Dial-A-Fix
Try redownloading it, ensure you select to SAVE TO DISK, and do not choose OPEN
After you save the download to Desktop, then right click on it and choose to Extract All
Follow the prompts
-
Hi there.
Please ignore my above message....must have been half asleep.
I ended up downloading Dial-a-fix from another website and it was complete. And I saved the fix.reg file in NotePad (I had originally saved it in Wordpad)
ANYWAY, I did all you suggested and it all went through successfully but I still get the same error message when opening firewall.........
-
Did all this start right after you installed All windows updates?
Or after you ran Uniblue Registry Booster?
-
It all started before updates, uniblue registry booster or anything was installed...
We tried to fix it by updating and using uniblue........
I am from Australia so this is why it takes a while to get back to you... (time difference)
Thanks
-
Hi again.
After waiting for your reply, I decided to do more research.
I have fixed the SECURITY/FIREWALL problem using sharedaccess.reg
But I still cannot fix the installer problem...
Please help.
I hope all is ok at your end of the world.
-
Sorry for the delay
I have fixed the SECURITY/FIREWALL problem using sharedaccess.reg
That's strange? sharedaccess.reg is the same as fix.reg I had you try earlier, maybe you just needed to run it again? Unsure
Download OTL.exe (http://\"http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe\") by OldTimer to your Desktop.
- Close all windows and double click on OTL.exe to run it
- Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted.
- It will produce two logs for you, one will pop up - OTL.txt, the other will be saved on your Desktop - Extras.txt. Post both logs in this thread.
- You may need to use two posts to get it all.
NOTE: If you have trouble, or an error message trying to post the logs
Can you upload it to a reply box
In a Reply, select "Browse..." on the bottom right and then navigate to the file and select it
Then click "Upload"
-
Here's the OTL attachment.......
-
Here's the extras attachment.....
-
It doesnt look like it is uploading properly....I will try once more.....
It staarts to upload and then just stops. When I reply it is not attached....
Its 1.57mb. Probably too big.
My email is bizzovegEmail Removed I will send it to you via this if you email me.
I dont know how else to send it to you.
-
Do Only this part again with Dial-A-Fix
Open Dial-A-Fix folder you extracted earlier
Double click on Dial-A-Fix.exe to run it
Select the GREEN (Select All) button on the bottom,
All selections on the main windows should now be checked
then click on GO
Ensure Date/Time are correct when prompted then click OK
Let the tool continue, when it's done Close the main window
Reboot your computer
Back in Windows
Exactly what can't you install?
Only one program, or other programs as well, give examples
Edit>>Just upload OTL.txt to MediaFire, no account is necessary
Post the download link here
http://www.mediafire.com/ (http://\"http://www.mediafire.com/\")
-
Just to make sure you have my address.....
-
Did you see my last reply?
I edited it a bit, please take a look
-
OTC link......

More problems occuring with original problems....
1. Security / Firewall thing is happening again. ie; cannot start the service. sharedaccess.reg is not fixing.
2. dial a fix has errors when I click GO (after select all).
It cant seem to identify internet explorer 8 (i got this during an update i did while you were away)
It kept coming up with errors so I cancelled it.
I cant install a software Astrology Program called SolarFire. It loads fine on my computer but not my friends. We have the same windows OS.
oh dear!
-
Ok.
Have uninstalled Internet Exlporer 8.
Ran Dial a fix again.
I just tried to install a game (it uses windows installer package) and it worked fine.
I still cant install Solarfire (which uses windows installer package).
I double clicked on 2 other files on the Solarfire disk (they were applications) called instmsia and instmsiw.
Error message said "Wrong OS or OS version for application"
Is this any help????
-
Personally, if I just Clean installed Xp, and had this many problems, I would just start over
Now, let's go back to the first reply you gave
I have done a validation check through microsoft.com and the OS shows up as 'genuine'. I just think something went wrong during installation and a file is missing or something.
It's quite obvious from your OTL log, this is not a legal version of XP
That may be where all the problems are stemming from
I suggest that you, ONE: Purchase a legal version and clean install
Or just plain clean install anyways as you have to many problems at the moment
What do you think?
-
Hi there.
We thought of exactly the same thing.....we formatted the hard drive and reloaded windows xp and it had the same problem.
I think it may be too old as another computer (formatted and reload windows xp at the same time) worked!
I will recommend whole new computer!!!!!
Anyway thanks for your help....we learnt a few things along the way.
Take Care and shall talk again soon (I just know it)
