If it not one thing it is another:blink:
Remember that day went you helped me for the whole day!!! Because my PC would not open. I was getting the message:
Windows could not start because the following is missing/corrupt: Windows\system32\config\system
Well more then a few times this week upon start up it displayed this message, I rebooted by pushing and holding the start button on the tower and on all occassions the pc started with no problem. However, I want to nip this bug right now before I have to spend another whole day trying to fix it:rolleyes:
I haven't been on my computer that much, so I don't know why this happens.

If I remember correctly, we never did get Chkdsk to finish
Can you do the following, just want to double check something
Download OTL.exe (http://"http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe") by OldTimer to your Desktop.
- Close all windows and double click on OTL.exe to run it
- Under "Extra Registry" Select "Use Safelist"
- Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted.
- It will produce two logs for you, one will pop up - OTL.txt, the other will be saved on your Desktop - Extras.txt. Post both logs in this thread.
- You may need to use two posts to get it all.
-
uhhh..really dumb question. I am now only using mozilla and when I click on the OTL link another window pops up and tells me that the programs is downloaded. However it does ask me where I want to save it. WHen I was using IE and wanted to download something it would always ask me where to save it.

Here are the logs:

By default, Firefox saves to MyDocuments>>Downloads folder in XP
You can change that folder in TOOLS>>OPTIONS>>General Tab
Or have you be prompted where to save to disk
Can you please copy/paste the logs in a reply, much easier to follow along
-
Can you again try the following, we never did this to complete earlier
Open MyComputer>>Right click on your C: drive and select Properties
Run a Disk Cleanup
Let it finish calculating and then have it clean
Downloaded program Files
Temp Internet Files
Temp Files
Recycle Bin
When done Disk Cleanup
Click on TOOLS>>Select CHECK NOW under Error checking
Tick both
Fix errors and repair bad sectors
Click START>>This will run on next start, allow it and reboot
Let me know if it finds and repairs anything
-
Hi,
It found and replaced 2 bad clustered files.
1-\windows\system32\dllcache\multibox.dll
2-\windows\$ntser~3\reg00915
-
keep me updated how the computer behaves
-
will do,
thanks again bud.
-
Opened my pc and I got that same error. Closed the pc with the button from the tower...restarted the pc and everything went ok.
DO you have anymore tricks up your sleeve:)
-
Can you let me know the manufacturer and model of your Harddrive
Enter Device manager and expand on +Disk Drives
If it doesn't supply your Manufacturer of the hard drive, can you include the whole model number
-
This is what I got:
Generic usb CF reader usb device
G...........u....MS " "" " '' " " ''
G.................SD
G SM
and
Samsung SP4002H
-
Why not take the time and run Samsungs diagnostic tool for your harddrive
from the following link
http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/support/utilities/Support_HUTIL.html
You'll want the Hutil 210 ISO (For CD ROM Drive).zip
Save and extract the ISO file within
Then burn the image to an empty CD-R or CD rewriteable
You can't burn as simply Data, but rather as an Image file
Boot with it
Run only the "Self Diagnostic" test
ensure to "Scan the entire disk surface" when prompted
Let me know if it finds any errors on the drive
-
Save and extract the ISO file within
I am not too sure what you mean by extract within.
Also, should I save to my desktop or in the C drive?
Thanks
-
Save the file somewhere convienent
Extract the contents
Burn the image file
-
what's up doc!!
Ok, I think I am doing something wrong.
1-went to the site and downloaded the zipped file on my desktop.
2- right clicked on the zipped zile, and clicked on extract all.
3-another folder showed up on my desktop"unzipped file"
4-clicked on the file and in that file there was only one "thing" in it. With that icon that you need to choose the program you want to open it.
5-clicked on it, and chose burn to disk
6-inserted a cd-rom rw..When I viewed the contents of the cd, there was a file written in it.
7-placed the cd into the computer(I burned it from my laptop)
8-booted my pc, the "bios, biops..don't remember the name" stayed on for about 10 seconds, and then it went to the windows startup.
Am I missing something? because it did not ask me to run any diagnostic test.
-
What burning program are you using?
When you extracted the contents, you should have a file with a .iso extension
This is an image file
You can't just burn it as Data, as I stated earlier, you must burn it as an Image
Remember earlier, on another topic, same computer, I had you download and install
Ashampoo burning studio
When you burned the disc, you selected "CREATE/BURN DISC IMAGES"
That is what you need to do again
Now, I'm not sure what burning software your using on this laptop, but it should also allow to burn a .iso image file
-
(http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/mad.gif) I give up
downloaded ashampoo,
extracted hutil to desktop.
opened ashampoo...create/burn disk image......burn cd/dvd from a disk image....disk image path, I cliked on browse, desktop, cliked on the hutil unzipped file, then I get no items match your search. I've been fiddling with this for an hour now.
On another note, I am all out of cdrw, I do have a few dvd+r will this do?
thanks, and sorry for this irritating step!
-
Don't forget, a CDRW is a rewriteable, you can write to it many times
If you meant CD-R, than your out of luck, yes, if your recorder can record to dvd+r than you can use it
I just checked the file I had you extract
It's not really your fault your having trouble recording it
I really can't understand why Samsung named it the way they did
When you extract the file, it's called the following
Hutil210.iso(For CD ROM Drive)
Can you right click on the extracted file and choose Properties
Remove (For CD ROM Drive) from the file name field, leaving just Hutil210.iso
OK it, that should help you find the correct file with Ashampoo
-
Alright, that worked! CD burned...rebooted the computer with the cd in it...and, you guessed it more problems(http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)
It is asking my to agree to the terms. I have to press on Y from my keyboard..ain't working. I am thinking my wireless keyboard ain't going to work and I am going to need one of those old wired keyboards(http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif)
Please advice....The term says that HUTIL may erase all data on the drive and strongly recommend to backup? Should I backup, if yes, you'll have to guide me in this too. I never backup any files before. Is it as simple as copying all important files on a USB key?
-
Run only the "Self Diagnostic" test
ensure to "Scan the entire disk surface" when prompted
-
Hi guestsolo,
I haven't done the test yet because when I boot with the cd it goes to the agreement page and from there I nees to press Y or N or ESC, but my keyboard does not work when I am there and I do not have a wire keyboard.
So I need to find someone who's got one!!
-
Hello guestsolo, all is good with you?
I managed to get a wiredkeyboard, but still nothing. The cd boots to the HUTIL agreement page were I need to accept their terms by pressing on Y, but it don't work!
In the meantime the problem is getting worst, I need to restart my pc about 5 times now before it actually loads.
-
I am guessing that the harddrive is failing, just for safe measures, you should backup any important files/folders
Can you try the following, download Seatools for Windows diagnostic tool
from this direct link
http://www.seagate.com/staticfiles/support/seatools/SeaToolsforWindowsSetup-1204.exe
It's a diagnostic tools for Seagate and Maxtor drives, but shoud work with Samsung also
Run the installer, then from the desktop run Seatools for Windows
After scanning for your drive click "I Accept"
Put a tick next to your drive, then under "Basic Tests" select 'SMART Check'
Let the check finish, let me know if it passes or fails
Next, again select your Drive then "Basic Tests" select 'Long Drive Self Test'
This test can take some time, let me know if it passes the test
-
Smart check passed!
-
long self test...FAILED
-
Again, ensure you backup any personal files/folders to external drive
Since you know how to download and burn an Image file
Download and save SeaTools for DOS ISO Image
to desktop from the following location
http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=seatooldreg&vgnextoid=480bd20cacdec010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD
Burn the Image file to an empty CD-RW or CD-R, or whatever, your option
\Boot from the ISO file and run again the long DST test from dos
when done, FIX all problems
Let me know if that is any help, if you can't get it to run, think about getting a new harddrive
-
Hey bud!
I have never backed up any files before. I am thinking it is pretty easy, just copy those files onto a USB key?
Also, with mozilla is there a way to export all my bookmarks to the USB key? Or do I have to write them dowm one by one.
Thanks
-
ARGGHH.....won't run, same problem with the HUTIL, boots to the agreement page and can't accept it to continue.
So I am left with buying a new drive, or should I simply buy a new computer??? that is the question.
-
boots to the agreement page and can't accept it to continue.
That sounds more like your having a problem with you keyboard, choosing OK or Enter, is that the problem?
Can you do anything with your keyboard in DOS?
Yes, you can simply copy/paste file/folders to a USB drive if needed
To export bookmarks in Firefox, click on BOOKMARKS>>ORGANIZE BOOKMARKS>>Import and BACKUP drop down menu>>Export HTML
Choose the download location of external thumbdrive

Correct, that is the problem. That was also the same problem with the HUTIL. The only thing I could do in DOS was to violently beat the crap out of my keyboard
/tongue.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />
I thought because it was a DOS program my wireless keyboard could not function. I managed to find a wired keyboard but with that too nothing worked.
-
I usually like to try a PS2 keyboard, the connection has a purple end
Are you using a USB keyboard?
If so, you may have to ensure it's enabled in BIOS, not tough, but easier just making sure to use PS2
Are you sure you can't try another keyboard?
Can you try your keyboard in normal windows, see if it works then?
-
Yes it is a USB keyboard. Microsoft natural wireless ergonomic keyboard 7000.
I did bring a keyboard from work, wired but still usb. I very much doubt that I can find a PS2. I don't know anybody who's got a playstation2 anymore!!!!Just kidding.
Is there a way to see if me keyboard is bios enabled. I went to control panel >>printer, other hardware>>>keyboard, but there was nothing there to tell me about the bios.
My keyboard works fine in normal windows. I have been typing these posts to you from my pc. I haven't shutdown my computer since that day when I had to restart 5+ times. When I am done using it I put it in hibernate mode.
-
You may have to enter the BIOS and enable support for USB keyboard
This may be a problem, as you may need a keyboard with PS/2 connection, as you may not be able to enter bios with the USB keyboard
If you can get into the BIOS, this is the instructions
# To change the computer's Legacy USB BIOS setting, restart your computer.
# Just as your computer is booting, look on the screen for some text that says something similar to Press X to Enter Startup, where X is generally the F2 key or the DEL key.
# If you do not see this message, try pressing the F2 and DEL keys over and over right after restarting your computer.
# After pressing those keys, you should be taken into your computer's BIOS settings.
# If Windows starts and you do not see your BIOS settings, you will need to press a different set of keys to enter your BIOS. Click here for a list of other BIOS keys.
# Once in the BIOS, look for a setting in your computer's BIOS called "Legacy USB Support" or "Legacy Keyboard Device." Turn this ON. This will make your keyboard work outside of Windows.
# After making the change, save your settings and exit. This is generally done by pressing the 'ESC' key and then pressing 'Y' to save the settings.
If you can't access bios, which I have my doubts
If you can get your hands on a PS/2 keyboard temporarily, they are still readily available, you only need one for a few minutes, you can change the setting and then continue to use your USB keyboard
-
Hot dog she's working!!!! In dos with my USB legacy enabled...fired up the seatool and long test is currently running.
-
long test failed, said to contact manufacture for help
I am going to run the HUTIL and see what happens with that.
-
Ran the HUTIL test,
Agreed to the terms>>>went to the test scan test, then another popup appeared; "test loop", with the #1 under it, I pushed enter and all it did was reboot and return me to the agreement page.
-
No sense prolonging it, ensure to back up all important files/folders
Obviously you can't backup a program, only it's data base,etc...
I suspect you have a 40gb IDE drive, you can easily replace it with something bigger in size for a
fairly reasonable price, do you have backup discs?
-
So Doc, give it to me straight. she ain't gonna make it! The wounds are too deep and hit the main arteries!
/tongue.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />
Yes it is a 40gb drive. If I have to replace that, I might just go ahead and get a new computer.
BUT...if I were to only replace that piece of hardware, is it something I could install myself?
I will be going on vacation for a week, so I won't be able to log in here to reply.
See you in a week!
-
Do you have your XP install CD?
Do you know your Product key number for XP? It might be labelled on the side of the computer
I could suggest to clone the drive, but since the drive is failing, the clone would probably fail also
-
Ok last post before I go on vacation.
I now have no sound, in device manager the sound tab has many yellow exclamation points. Cloning a drive, didn't think that was possible. Let me think about it for a week and when I get back I'll look at prices for a new PC and thake it from there.
If I do buy a new one, I will be asking you for advice on getting a good quality PC. I was thinking of a Lenovo desktop.
Ok now, really I am off to the white sands and warm waters, laying under the sun!!
-
Have a great time, when you do get back, could you please answer the last questions I posted
Do you have your XP install CD?
Do you know your Product key number for XP? It might be labelled on the side of the computer
In addition, supply exact Make/model of your computer please
-
xp install cd, YES
Product key#:YES
exact name, model: it's a mutt. Had pieces changed over the years. When I get back I'll post a log from auslogic detailing what's in it!
I'm off, for real now
/cool.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'B)\' />
-
Hi,
For the Auslogic, there is alot of info and I can't copy paste everything. Since I can't give you the exact model of my pc, which parts do you need to know?
Thanks
-
I'm not familiar with Auslogics system Info
Instead, can you do the following
Download and install the latest version of Speccy from this link
http://www.filehippo.com/download_speccy
During installation, please untick the option to install the Google Toolbar
Run Speccy, after it finishes loading, click on FILE>>Save as Text file
Save a copy to your Desktop
Then in a reply back here, UPLOAD the file please
-
Hi Doc,
she's dead!!! The wife closed my computer a few days ago and I've been trying to get her to open, but all I get is the error message. I backed up most of my important files, but there are more files that I needed and did not have time to back up.
I am of course writing this with my laptop. Do you think if I repeat all the steps when I first got with this problem and you made me run, i think it was called Linux puppy, I can reopen my computer the one more time to save all my files and then I'll lay her to rest once and for all.
Thanks
-
Alright, try and boot with the Puppy disk, do you get to the main screen
I would also insert a USB external drive for backup before booting, and yes, you can backup with Puppy
Do you need more instructions?
-
I am going to follow the instructions that you gave on my first thread on how to boot from puppy. If I encounter any problems I'll post back here.
-
Got back into windows. I am not going to close it again, I will instead put it in hybernate when I am not using it!
I am now going to look for a new computer!
Is there any type/model that you like more?
Thanks
-
Hi guest solo,
Second thought I transfered all important files to my laptop and will keep this computer for minor things.
Question: My kaspersky license ran out and I went to renew it on the kaspersky web site and I upgraded to the Pure. However when I want to run the exe file I get an error message. Could the linux puppy fix somehow block, for lack of a better word, the installation of kaspersky?
I am in contact with one of their techs, so hopefuly they can figure out why it won't run.
-
Hi guestsolo,
Sorry for the long delay for the text file you asked for. Anyhow here it is.
