does anyone know how to remove items for the open with menu in win 2k/xp ... got a buggy video player in the lits for txt files somehow and I'm trying to remove it
so anyone got any ideas?

It could be in a number of different places in the registry, the first place to look is
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.txt
(where .txt is the extension that is having the problem with extra \"Open with\" entries)
There might be a subkey named \"OpenWithList\" under this key, look in there and if the video player is listed, delete it.
Another subkey that might hold the info is the \"OpenWithProgIds\" key, again delete any bad entries.
IIRC there is somewhere else in the registry that also can hold this info, but those two locations are the primary suspects...

checked there and no joy
/sad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' />
I trhink I'm gonna do a reg troll looking to the program entry name and see if i can root it out like that

Never edit the registry directly if there's a user interface that does what you want. In this case, it sound like the following is what you want to do:
In Windows Explorer, click Tools, Folder Options. Select the File Types tab.
Scroll down the list of registered file types and either edit or delete your offending program from the list.
Be sure you leave something associated with .txt when you're done.

not therer .... it one of the cases were with a full reg backup you have to go \"cleaning\"
/wink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\';)\' />
and telling someone not to do something makes them more likely to do it ... andd Ive been registry playing for years ... and only killed one system as the backup I had was bad

this is usally simple...very simple flames. sometimes though..i had apps i never found.
first place to look is NOT HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.txt but
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers
you looked there??? check all around in that area first
also...man i cant remember but there is a actual directory
in your WINNT dir somewhere that can store some of these
as .lnk's (from waht i remember)...nevemind taht is
?:\WINNT\ShellNew
forget that
if you cant find it i will track down the info for you...again not
all things are in the same spot..usually they can be found..but
some hide :-(
search for winnt shell extension or something close to that

o btw if you get a book i believe that is called \"Windows 2000 registry\"...its big and black...it will show you pretty much all the possibilites within the first
few chapters. after that it gets into other stuff..but like ch1 or ch2 goes into
it from what i remember..it was towards the begining since it is very basic....good book to read if your into 2k/xp registry. Its only like ~600 pages but alot of info.

I didnt find the key to remove the offending entry .... but a \"friend\" of mine decided to test some warez on my pc insted of his .... and even tho it wasnt a virus, it did make windows totally unusable... so I formated and re-installed.
now I have a new User Name and P/W ... that should stop him!

To change the \"open with\"
On win2k open \"my computer\"
go to \"tools\"
open \"Folder options\"
Click on tab \"File types\"
on the list scroll down to the extension you want to change to \"open with\"
and change it to the program you want to use to open that type of file.
