Anyone know how to host you own site at home?
1)what software is needed
2)what hardware is needed
3)any websites with this sort of info?
Thanks
-
First, you need to have a static IP. If you have a dynamic IP it's still possible but much more complicated. If you have a static IP then pretty much any PC running linux would be fine, you need to do dns but you can either do that yourself, or go to a place like granitecanyon that offers free dns services. Far as software, it depends on what all you need to run. A linux box will have most everything you need, though it may take a while to get it all setup if it's your first time.
-
JT is right...dynamic is a lil complicated but it works nicely.
Hardware: I assume you will be using a 2nd linux box? Any semi-decent computer should work. You will also need a router of some sort since you will be using 2 computers on your boadband connection. This router also needs to be able to forward ports since port 80 is typically blocked for most broadband connections.
Software: Visit http://www.dyndns.org/ (http://\"http://www.dyndns.org/\") and sign up for a dynamic dns account. Then download one of the clients and install it on your windows box. This client will tell the dynamic service what your current IP is so when you go to: http://rudeboy52.homeunix.org:8080/ (http://\"http://rudeboy52.homeunix.org:8080/\") it knows what IP to use for the lookup.
Sites: Come here as many of us have setup this kind of things and we would be glad to help you out.

Thanks for the info guys.!
Basicly i just got my hands on a pIII 550mhz 128meg ram 5 gig scsi hdd
I use a thosiba 1800-400 laptop as my main computer it has an ok spec
im getting a cable line installed and they have told me i can pay for a static ip so thats what im going to do.
i have Win2K pro and Win2k server i was thinking of using 2k server if possible but i will get my hands on linux if you think that would be better.
I have also been reading up on analog x and apache its starting to make sence but i might be barking up the wrong tree completely ! lol
i was going to use the pIII as the server.
so do i need to network the 2 computers and use 1 as the server or somthing like that?
lamens terms would be good i know quite alot about computers in general and i know the basics of networking as i hat to set up my office network because my boss is so cheap and did not want to pay for someone to do it.
but as far as hosing goes im a bit wet behind the ears but im reading lots!
I intend to base the site around hosting from home and making it as siple as possible and once iv got the site up and running i would be very happy to have adds for your sites on there.
Thanks
Anthony
-
And ill try not to have so many spelling mistakes on the site!
-
If you use the laptop as your main machine then yes, you will want to setup the P3 as the server. You can setup the server as either linux or windows while most of us will probably advocate a linux server. Getting a static IP will make things a tiny bit easier. You can basically disregard the dynamic section of my post.
-
Thanks for your help once im a bit further forward on the hardware front ill sure ill have plenty more questions!
What version of linux would you recomend?
iv posted my desk top on the idle chat forum!

Hrm...I think you would do good with RedHat 8.0 or Mandrake 9.0. I personally use FreeBSD...which is actually unix and not linux. The difference being that linux was developed as a clone of unix. Unix has been around for a really long time now....linux, not so long.
Mandrake (http://\"http://www.linuxiso.org/distro.php?distro=29\")
Red Hat (http://\"http://www.linuxiso.org/distro.php?distro=7\")
The place to dl them is down right now, but...you need to dl disk one of each of those. They are iso images so you can burn them from Nero or something. Then you just boot to them cd and setup should start.
Im trying to find you mirror sites for the RH and Mandrake ISO images.
-
Mandrake would probably be the best for your first distro. I prefer Mandrake over RedHat myself anyways, but RedHat is the standard for alot of specialized webhosting apps (such as control panels) so I'll probably end up putting RedHat 8.0 on my next server.
-
Thanks ill get both and experiment with them!
Would you consider giving me a couple of meg on your server for a month just so i can experiment a bit without having to pay for a whole year! i would pay you for it of course!
np if you would rather not get involved
-
That'd be fine, the new server should be ready in about a week. Have all the parts, just have to install the OS. Also went ahead and paid our first month for colocation, so everything's set.
I plan on charging $19.95/mo for our regular hosting package, but will have specials at $14.95/mo and you're welcome to get that one.
-
thanks just drop me a mail when its ready
-
ok iv bought a domain www.tekpants.com hehe!
i have apache, a dns forwarding thing and lots of other stuff.
what would be the first step
im using win2k pro at the mo!
any guidence would be good as the dns thing says the domain does not exist?
-
We are providing DNS services only, not registration services. You must instruct your registrar to use the nameservers ns1.mydyndns.org, ns2.mydyndns.org, ns3.mydyndns.org, ns4.mydyndns.org, and ns5.mydyndns.org for your domain. (Note: If your registrar will not let you input this many servers, leave off higher numbered servers; only ns1 and ns2 are absolutely required for activation, but we strongly recommend listing as many as possible with your registrar.)
(do i need to do this even when hosting my own site ?)
-
If you have linux and are using a static IP, you can run your own DNS. You can too with win2k/xp but unless you have the server version, you have to get extra software to do that.
It sounds like you are using mydns.org for your dns servers, so you should be able to just put in your ip and within a few days it'll resolve. Now you do have to let the place you signed up for a domain know what dns servers to link to it. Basically, go back to where you bought the domain, should be some kind of manage link, look for something that says dns or nameservers, and put in the addresses mydns gave you.
Hope that helped.
-
thanks i think i need to pay $30 to dydns befor they will give me one do you know any cheaper ones?
if not ill use them.
what server do you use apache? or can you do it all in the linux os?
ill get there i guess lol i just need to sort this dns thing.
-
Yes I use apache for the webserver, it's a program that runs on linux or on windows. Bind is the name of the DNS program that I use on linux, I don't think they have a windows version (but I honestly haven't looked). You can goto www.granitecanyon.com (http://\"http://www.granitecanyon.com\") for a free dns service, but you have to learn some about dns files as it isn't point and click easy. Read the example they have, it'll help you figure out what you need to put into your own file.
-
Yeah i have apache for win2k
i think iv done the RR's right could you check it for me?
-
ok i managed to do the file and i must say i was impressed with my self! lol
iv been to register.com and added ns1.granitecanyon.com and ns2.granitecanyon.com to the dns servers but ill tell you wahts confusing me now!
1) what tells my domian tekpants.com to point at me
2) and using apache but im sure ill figure that bit out!
thanks.
btw i would like to make a donation for your help when im done just to show my thanks
-
Your DNS records should resolve your servers IP for any visitors. I am not familiar with granitecanyon, but if your IP is static then you should be able to modify the \"www\" record in your dns and it should work.

Go to Homeunix.org (http://\"http://www.homeunix.org\") and see what they have...its for dynamic or static ip service.
-
actualy brain i dont have a static i.p yet and im using win2k
actualy brain i dont have a static i.p yet and im using win2k
Don't let the domain name fool you...the client program that dynamically updates the dns is running on my WinXP box and I just have the proper ports forwarded to my Unix box. Homeunix.org is just one of the domains you could put your subdomain under...there are many to choose from.
-
its all just to damn confusing now!!! i feel stupid.
Could you give me a general step by step guide from start to finish based on the fact that a dont have a static i.p. pleeeeeez
-
Easiest way, get a static IP. That way you have your domain registrar, a DNS server, and your home PC with a webserver on it. You just set the domain to use the dns server addresses, set the dns server to your static ip, and that's it. With a dynamic IP the process is similar but there's some extra steps involved. Basically you need to find a service like mydns, use their dns servers, and run a program on your PC that auto-updates their dns server with your new IP everytime it changes.
-
1. Go to http://www.dyndns.org/ (http://\"http://www.dyndns.org/\") and sign up for an account
2. Go to the dynamic dns section of the site @ https://members.dyndns.org/nic/dyndns (http://\"https://members.dyndns.org/nic/dyndns\")
3. Select a hostname ala....Type the first part of the name in the input box, and select the second part of the name from the drop-down list. This allows you to have anything.dyndns.org, anythingelse.homeunix.com, etc
4. Go to the clients page and download one of the client programs to autoupdate your dns entry: http://clients.dyndns.org/windows.php (http://\"http://clients.dyndns.org/windows.php\")
I use DirectUpdate.
5. Install DirectUpdate on your computer.
6. You should have the following pieces of info ready:
Hostname you selected in step 3
Username on Dyndns along w/ your password.
7. Once DirectUpdate is installed, then you need to go to Launch Admin Settings. Go to the status tab and click \"Create\" to create an account.
8. Account type will be \"dyndns.org (Dynamic)\"
9. Domain will be where you type your hostname. Mine says \"rudeboy52.homeunix.org\"
10. Username and password are what you did in step 1.
Click ok and DirectUpdate should be running. It might take a few minutes for it to actually find your account, connect to your computer, and update your IP.
Now that you have that setup....we need to know if you ISP blocks port 80. I assume you have a router that does port forwarding? Forward port 80 to the computer that will be hosting the website. Post the address and we will test it for you. If 80 doesnt work then you can try forwarding 8080 and we will test that for you also.
Enjoy
-
thanks !
im getting my DSL in at the end of the month im just on dial up at the mo! so im getting everything ready now so i dont have to start this all then!
my isp does not block port 80 i asked them.
ok i signed up as tekpants.homedns.org and DU is running fine sooooooo..... now how do i tell my registra to point my domain at me?
and then i think im done apart from finishing my site of course lol.
-
http://hometown.Email (http://\"http://hometown.Email\") Removed.uk/facecomputers/cp.jpg
if that helps its my control panel.!
-
holy crap im getting there!
BUT im going to have to manualy set up PHP on apache, i think ill have a little sleep first it could take some time........zzz
-
oooops must have forgoten to sign in!
-
How's it coming along? Did you get the DNS resolved?
-

Look under the \"Change IP\" link on that control panel. If you have a static IP then you will know what is...otherwise you may need to find a way to forward it to http://tekpants.homedns.org (http://\"http://tekpants.homedns.org\")
-
ok guys im going in! ill report back when iv done it i just need to remember 1 thing \"THIS NET THING DOES NOT OWN ME I AM BETTER THAN THE NET\"
with thoes words whizzing round my brain i shall battle forth and resolve this DNS once and for all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh
-
iv only gone and f***ing done it http://www.tekpants.com (http://\"http://www.tekpants.com\") wooooohoooooo only slight problem is that my registra insists on putting a banner on my site for doing the forwarding for free and it dont quite work properly with my style sheet ho hum i can live with that just for now.
thanks guys thanks alot you have realy helpt me alot i have ordered up my 512k line so on monday 18th i should be able to set it up on the other computer i intend on using as a server reasnobaly quick.
better start writing my guide and i would like to include credits to both of you guys as well if thats ok ?
now i need to set up invision board i had it running using MS IIS as my server software but i want to run apache and you have to install php manualy on apache and its not at all easy.
but nearly there.....!!!!!!!! yey! yey! yey!
-
If you're going to run linux on the dedicated server, then PHP generally comes installed already, you don't have to do anything special. Just make sure you have apache, php, and MySQL and that's virtually everything you need (ok you need perl too, but so much depends on that I doubt you could accidentally leave it out).
-

Excellent! I think it would be ok to credit JT and I...just remember that we are here to help.
/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' /> Glad you got it all setup correctly. That banner does suck though...not sure why they would charge you and put a banner up.
-
Thanks could you actualy see the site?
i just tryed it now from work and only the stupid banner was displayed i think mabey it timed out as its only hosted on 56k at the moment and the work connection is 64k isdn LOL!
Im sure it will be fine when i hav my 512k line in (i hope)
Thanks again.

Its working as of now for me.
-
could you try it again please my ADSL is set up now and thoses stupid people cannot tell me anything about port 80 execpt the fact that its probably somthing to do with the internet (im seriouse about that btw)
-
I tryed to connect from work but it wont work i guess my isp does not allow forwarding on port 80 DAMN IT.
any suggestions that dont involve buying a router?
-
Well it works from here, so the problem is somewhere else if you can't connect from work.
-
oh thats odd its working today hmmmmm oh well i guess im happy then.
-
It was a tad bit slow coming up but it works for me still...
-
i was probably using the bandwidth at the time iv been doing alot of d/ling

Your dl shouldn't totally affect my speed on dling the webpage as its uses your ul speed when sending me the page.....which may just be really slow.
-
oh yeah i see!
i was using imesh i was uploading at the same time my upload speed is 256k
-
Ahh..well if you were uling stuff then it would definately affect the speed of the site.

I'm using SuSE Linux 8.1 pro right now (that I just installed on my other computer
/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' /> ) costed me 80 bucks for that linux box, i was trying to convince myself it's worth it, that's why i headed up to grab it
/biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />
and also it's becuz I couldn't find it anywhere else that has SuSE 8.1 pro available for download..
/wink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\';)\' /> anyways, I feel happy with what I bought
/biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />
it seems like everyone here prefers Mandrake and RH
/unsure.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />
I heard that they all have the same kernal 2.4x something...
if mandrake/RH's really better, i might wanna install it on another harddrive and try
/biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />
why is it good at anyways
/sad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' /> ?
-
As you will realize when you start using different distros of linux or unix, they all have their own way of doing things. RH handles things a little different from Mandrake etc...
They all use the same Linux Kernel, but its almost like how Win9x/ME/2k/NT/XP are all pretty similar, but things are done a little differently on all of them. I just did a RH 8.0 install and I think its beautfiul...but I still have to check out Mandrake 9.0 and see which one I like better.
-
how about checking out SuSE Linux 8.1
/unsure.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

Been away for a while i just thought i would leave a little remark saying how easy it all seams now i have had to do it quite a few times now after wiping my computers.
thanks for all your help guys.
anyhow im back online with ADSL 512kbps d/l 256kbps u/l
played soldier of fortune?
-
Long time no post. Glad to hear you got it all working. Been busy here, finally got my MythTV box working the way I like, and just installed Mandrake 9.1 on my two main systems.
-
try with dnsexit.com . They gives dynamic ip dns for free.
-
Hi,
I used to host my own site. I used xampp-lite to control.
It features Apache, MySQL, PhpMyAdmin and other goodies.
But since it took soo much bandwidth, and other net resources, i decided to move to a real host. If you want a cheap host, then i recommend T-Max hosting (http://\"http://www.tmaxhost.com\").
You'll have registrer a domain though... If you want more information on that point please pm me, k ?
-
Guys, lol whats down
-
You're a [censored]ing retard.
