Ok, can't quite decide on which video card to get. I like ATI and Matrox, but since I'm going to be running Mandrake 9.0 I probably need an Nvidia card. Looking at the Geforce4 MX440 line of cards. I could get one with 128mb ram and svideo out, or 64mb ram with two vga outs and a vivo kit for about the same price. Does this sound like an ok card or should I skip that and look to something better?
Don't do alot of gaming, though an occassional game of UT and some games run under winex would be nice.

I dont know much about video card performance under linux but i do play alot of games and iv had a hell of a lot of video cards over the years.
Personaly i like ATI cards the latest radion looks superb however although i like ATI cards in my experience GEForce TI range will allways give you the best FPS rate.
If you want something that would be above average all round i would look at the radion's if you want it mainly for games i would go for GEForce TI.
As far as DVD playback and video editing goes i would go for ATI every time.
just my opinion i hope it helps.
(after thought)
The TNT cards iv used have been a bit tempromental in games.
Good luck

I'd definitely go for ATI if it was going to be a Windows box. ATI has no real support for linux, just some community-developed drivers available. Nvidia on the other hand while maybe not officially supporting linux, has made binary drivers available that work rather well. Hence the need to get an Nvidia based card.
-
Well what ever route you go we will have to have a game of UT when my adsl gets activated!
have you played startrek voyager elite force?
-
Do you have a need for the VIVO and dual vga ports? If not, then get the 128MB card w/ svideo outs....
-
How does Linux run with 3dFX intensive games such as quake III and UT is it comparable?
-
Currently I have a Voodoo5 5500 and it runs Quake3 and UT just fine. Haven't tried UT 2003 yet. I decided on getting a Geforce4 TI4200 128mb card which should be pretty good for the games, now I just have to compile a kernel to use (need a custom kernel for the nvidia driver, and also need a custom kernel for win4lin to work, so looks like I gotta do it myself). I'll let you know how it goes, but it should work just fine.
-
do you want to sell the voodo 5 card?
-
JT, you shouldnt need to recompile the kernel to have that nvidia card work....
DL files from here (http://\"http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=linux_display_1.0-3123\")
To install from tar file, unpack each file:
$ tar xvzf NVIDIA_kernel.tar.gz
$ tar xvzf NVIDIA_GLX.tar.gz
cd into the NVIDIA_kernel directory. Type 'make install'. This will
compile the kernel interface to the NVdriver, link the NVdriver, copy
the NVdriver into place, and attempt to insert the NVdriver into the
running kernel:
$ cd NVIDIA_kernel
$ make install
Next, move into the NVIDIA_GLX directory. Type 'make install' -- this
will copy the needed OpenGL and XFree86 files into place:
$ cd ../NVIDIA_GLX
$ make install
Note that the \"make install\" for each package will remove any previously
installed NVIDIA drivers.
........
If you already have an XF86Config file working with a different driver
(such as the 'nv' or 'vesa' driver), then all you need to do is find
the relevant Device section and replace the line:
Driver \"nv\"
(or Driver \"vesa\")
with
Driver \"nvidia\"
In the Module section, make sure you have:
Load \"glx\"
You should also remove the following lines:
Load \"dri\"
Load \"GLcore\"

TheSmith, I guess I could sell the Voodoo5 since I shouldn't need it anymore. I have a Savage4 32MB I could use instead on that machine.
-
ok cool how much do you want for it?
-
How much you want to give for it?

He is probably just very busy. Come to #techchat on irc.arshost.com and you can talk to JT.

I'm here, just busy...plus I'll be busy getting ready for Thanksgiving...and getting the new server up...should have some free time after New Year's...ok so exactly how much is £30?
-
About $47.10 but your damn curency is in flux.
-
Had a think about it yet?
-
I'm thinking...I really like the card, but I suppose I could sell it for $50. Where'd I be shipping it to?
-
Actualy you would be shipping to the uk so it might start getting a bit pricey to send it i work for a shipping company so i might be able to arrange that my self from here ill look into prices as i might be able to get it shipped for nothing were in the us are you ?
