I am working on a Dell PC that the video does not display in other than the 'normal' windows mode. When the machine boots up you cannot read the screen. Only when the Windows desktop loads can you now normally read the screen. You cannot go into safe mode because that is primitive video (640x480-16 colors). I can't even go to the bios page. PC is running Win ME.

Strange problem! So you mean windows looks OK? I would try a different monitor to rule that out. If you can't even read the BIOS screen I'd say it's a monitor, cable, port or video card problem. In other words physical.

/sad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' /> I have already switched monitors and the same problem exists. video card is on-board motherboard. This machine is full of viruses and trojans. I will land up reformatting HD and re-installing software. I will also pull cmos battery and hopefully clear bios of any viruses. Other than than I don't know what to do except call Dell.

maybu u could switch off video on board and put for a test video card to see if u see anything in boot before windows starts?

Exactly!
Switching off the on-board video and putting in my own card was my next stop.
Thanks

/dry.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'<_<\' /> I also think it's a Video card problem. Since you're using a Dell sys, & you've said that you can see video when OS loads, it's not your monitor (of course!) If you really wanna fix that problem, i can't just give you exact advises on that problem coz we need to do some further troubleshooting. To be sure, just contact Dell hardware support, i guess u already know the number for TEch support?
