for some reason my HDD crashed. now i'm using a new HDD. can i recover the data from the crashed one using this new one and how.

How did it crash, was it windows? Can you read from the drive? Does the Bios pick it up during the POST screen? Need a little more info

Hi. I also have a problem with my HD. my external harddrive is hosed. The spindle sounds broken as it makes a repeated scratching noise. I opened it up and it's an IBM Deskstar. I'm told that I can get an exact HD and move the platters to the it (dust-free as possible of course) and it may give me enough time to recover some data.

I haven't been able to find any sites with instructions or how-to guides. Can someone direct me to a good site - maybe with pictures as well?

If your already have a windows os installed on your new h.d. Are you able to hook it up to your other IDE ribbon. If so make sure the jumpers are correct then windows should be able to see the data on the drive.

yes, i did the same. connected by the IDE cable and changed the jumper settings. thats it now everything is fine. i could recover the data.
but i wonder wether i can use that said drive as an primary HDD after formating. any further guidance, pl.

What I would do is. Remave the drive you are using now and install the old one. Change the jumpers, format. Then reload the os. If all is working fine then you can use it. Good luck

i have a similar problem as well, but the bios reported a smart drive error about 5 weeks ago....i reconnected it today, and it still reported that error...its a maxtor diamondmax 9 plus sata drive...

its running kinda hot too btw, (im using a molex 4-pin power cable....didnt get a sata power cable with the drive...) /unsure.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':unsure:\' />

i have currently a 420 mb drive (from my other 486dx2 comp, anyone?) with win 98 first edition...the other drive, the maxtor 120 gigs, also has the same os on it...is it possible to get the data off of it?

When in doubt with RAID or other Server applications, check out www.itsecuritypros.com <-- They helped me when in a bind with a client.   They take Security seriously too!!

I tried everything before calling a service company.  It wasn't too expensive either (much better than I thought), I guess recovery programs can only do so much!!!

Ummm, did you see the date of the last post
May be of some help to others if it's a good program
but this user may be long done with their troubles
