Title: XP Virtual Memory

Occasionally on shut down I get a message informing me my virtual memory is too small. I had this problem some time ago and the respondant (sorry, can't remember who) then pointed me towards Intel application accellerator which caused this. I did have that installed and after removing it all was fine and I was a happy little bunny.
Now however, the same problem has come back. The only thing that has changed recently is that I've applied SP1a.
Hardware is P4 1.7 (I think) with 256mb RAM

Any help / suggestions greatly appreciated!

What are your virtual memory settings? Do you have a System Managed Size of a Custom Size. If you want to play it safe set to System Managed. /wink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\';)\' />

I find that if you set your VM to double your system memory, everything runs smooth

Try this...

1) Click on "Start"
2) Click on "Control Panel"
3) Double click on "System"
4) Click on the "Advanced" tab
5) Click on "Settings" under Performance
6) Click on the "Advanced" tab
7) Under Virtual Memory click "Change"
8) Pick "Custom Size"
9) For Initial Size enter "512" and under Maximum Size enter "512"
10 ) Click on the "SET" button (make sure you click that)
11) Click on "Apply"
12) Rebbot your system

Thanks for the replies!
The VM at the moment is system managed, I'll try changing it to 512 and let you know what happens.
Trouble is it is an intermittant problem so I may well be reposting in a couple or three weeks!

Well that didn't take long!
Changed the VM to 512 initial / 512 max still getting the problem!
I've now trying 360 / 720 but this does seem a bit excessive??

Every time that you shut down the computer, you may receive the following error message at the Windows is shutting down... screen:

Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of your virtual memory paging file. During this process memory requested for some applications may be denied.

[color=\"red\"]CAUSE[/color]
This behavior may occur if you have Symantec Norton Personal Firewall program, which is included with Norton Internet Security, installed. This behavior may occur if you have the Norton Personal Firewall file, Iamapp.exe loaded from the Startup group in the Windows registry.

[color=\"blue\"]RESOLUTION[/color]
To resolve this issue, configure the Norton Personal Firewall program to start from the Windows Startup folder instead of from the Windows registry. To do this, follow these steps:

Start Windows Explorer. To do this, right-click Start, and then click Explore.
Navigate to the following folder location, where C: is the drive on which Windows is installed:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp

On the File menu, point to New, and then click Shortcut.
In the Create Shortcut dialog box, click Browse, and then browse to the following file:
C:\Program Files\Norton Personal Firewall\IAMAPP.EXE

Note Depending on whether you have Norton Personal Firewall or Norton Internet Security installed, Norton Personal Firewall may also be Norton Internet Security Family Edition or another version of Norton Internet Security.

Type a descriptive name for the shortcut, and then click Finish.
Quit Windows Explorer.
Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
Click the Startup tab, click to clear the IAMAPP check box under Startup Item, click Apply, and then click Close.
Click Restart to restart the computer.

In the even viewer, does it show you any errors to what is the cause of the problem? Look under the system and application logs.

1) click on "start"
2) click on "control panel"
3) click on "Administrative Tools"
4) click on "event viewer"

Yo also may want to clear all logs and wait until it gives the error again then reboot your system a look at the logs again.
