Okay, here is a problem that I found on my friend's laptop computer. They can not delete the data that is on the drive (too much MP3's and divx rips). They had ran the setup again off of the hard drive (do not know why) and it gave errors during the install and wanted to reboot. Once it rebooted it goes everytime into setup mode. Once it’s in setup mode it continues to run setup. After a bit it gives the following errors.
Warning a fatal error has occurred. Setup can’t continue.
Warning, failed to remove the product catalog IEEXCEP.cat
Warning, failed to remove the product catalog SP1.cat
Warning, failed to remove the product catalog MMI2EX.cat
Error, the signature XP Pro upgrade (it’s not the upgrade but the full corporate version) error 426.
Do you think the error is because the Windows CD has no service pack on it and the computer right now had SP1 and that is the cause of the problems? They want me to get this computer up and running without deleting any of the data other than windows.

good ol' MS kb site (http://\"http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=307153\")
original cd w/out sp1 does not make a difference, all it does is overwrite the new sp1 files with the original cd files, they would have to reinstall sp1 if their reinstall would of been successful
good luck
