Software / being watched by microsoft
« on: May 13, 2003, 08:57:55 AM »
OK, how about this:

M$ does not track down individuals, they will track down companies that are not using the licenses properly, and give then an opportunity to make it right before going to court. Next up they will track down anyone selling pirated software.

There are way too many people out there are running on OS’s that are pirated, and for MS to track them down and follow them around on the internet, HUMMM I don’t think so.

But just as a warning, if you ever plan on doing any programming and selling that, you better be FULLY legit. Programmers are constantly being checking for piracy.

Hardware / Restart troubles.
« on: May 08, 2003, 10:18:59 AM »
What OS are you running?

so far this still could be a software based problem.

in windows XP, right click on my computer > properties > advanced > startup and recovery settings > uncheck the auto reboot, and set it for a complete memory dump.

This will give you more information on the issue that you are really having, then we may be able to help out more with it.

Hardware / router

there should be a reset button on the router, hold that in for about 10 seconds while it is one, then put is through a power cycle.

Software / Windows PE Questions
« on: May 06, 2003, 01:01:25 PM »
try this web site out:

http://www.microsoft.com/LICENSING/program...a/sam/winPe.asp

for the most part it is there just to help in starting an installation of an OS. I found it not to be worth.

if you are looking for a bootable cd that will help in recoverying a broken system, look into ERD commander 2002, i found this one to be a great help.

Have fun,

Does it start happening right away, or after working on the system a while?

off the bat it sounds like a virus, or a nice little program called Xupiter.

Software / Missing Windows Xp File
« on: April 23, 2003, 10:06:42 AM »
With something like this, it could be a bad cd, or possible bad ram in the system.

Try swapping out the ram in the system then try it again.

Software / windows 2000 on a new HD
« on: April 11, 2003, 08:14:21 AM »
Hummmm good one, try this. when you are on the desktop with no icons opened up press CTRL-SHIFT-ESC this will open up the task manager, goto file then new task and run c:\winnt\explorer.exe -- note you must put in the full path. if that then opens up an explorer window i would check to see if there is an explorer.exe in the c:\winnt\system32 folder, if there is you have a virus.

there is also the option to try this. use task manager just like above and open up regedit then delete the key of: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices -- then restart and the key will be re-built for you.

Good luck, and have fun.

Software / f8 wont work
« on: March 17, 2003, 12:01:36 PM »
do you have an MS office keyboard that you need to press the F lock first on before the F8 button works?

try a different keyboard.

OR just turn off the system before it is fully booted up, that should give you the option to boot into safe mode.

Software / WinXp Upgrade?
« on: March 14, 2003, 02:17:59 PM »
you can preform a clean install with the upgrade cd, BUT you MUST have a past OS on cd in order to get by with the upgrade version. the XP install will ask for the cd then continue on with the installation.

I also agree with The Space Between on XP home. it is very limiting as far as what you can and can not do with the system.

and FYI you can join XP home to a workgroup but you can\'t join it to a domain. and there are tons of tools and features that are just not there to use.

Software / Saving WinXP Settings
« on: March 09, 2003, 02:22:07 PM »
you can do a system state backup with NTbackup, if you are running XP Home then you will need to install it off the CD, it is somewhere in the support folder.

after you install it take it out of the wizzard mode then work with it.

with a system state backup it will backup all of the registry, also all of the contents of the system32 folder, this means you will have all of your updates.

there is a lot more information on the MS KB about the system state backup, but don\'t limit the search to just XP.
