What kind of card do you have. Try updating the driver for you MOBO and card. Also if it is pci. Try different slots. You may have to go into device manager and remove the NIC card first. Good luck.

I could be the firmware update caused problems with the Ide drivers. Try uninstalling your update. If that doesn't work try to clear the cmos and reset settings. Or try to reinstall your ide drivers.

If you do junk it . Remover the hard drive and beat it with a hammer. You do not want anyone to get any kind of info from it. Reformating will not be safe enough. Good luck on your new computer. Go with AMD.

Go ahead on install the memory. If it doesn't work just return it. It the memory you are buying recommended by Gateway ? The psu and other parts are always cheap an Dell's compaq Gateways etc. That is how they can sell a neww P4 for $599.00. Here the old saying . You get what you pay for. Does the computer start in safe mode with the new memory?

You may want to up date the bios on this. How old is it. Gateway does have a 90 watt power supply. They even use it on P4's.

Is the key board working this time. Xp is very funny when you change any hardware. Reinstall the ram them get to your cmos and see if it reads the256. If not you may have bad ram or your computer will only allow you to install the Gateway ram. Look under the support for your computer to see what memory it excepts. Also try removing the 256 and start in safe mode see if it boots. Good luck

Hardware / CD ROM drive not responding
« on: September 14, 2003, 10:54:19 AM »
It all depends on what is wrong with the drives. Have you tried them in another computer? Also losing 2 drives means there is a underlaying problem. Also download the right driver for your drive. Normally this doesn't matter. But win me is funny like that.

It could be a short on your mobo. It could happen from Vibration , or a slight jar that you do not know happend. This is just a theory. Is there any other problems you are having?

What I would do is. Remave the drive you are using now and install the old one. Change the jumpers, format. Then reload the os. If all is working fine then you can use it. Good luck

If your already have a windows os installed on your new h.d. Are you able to hook it up to your other IDE ribbon. If so make sure the jumpers are correct then windows should be able to see the data on the drive.
