Tech Clinic / Cannot install any programs
« on: November 07, 2009, 04:20:28 PM »
Hi there.

We thought of exactly the same thing.....we formatted the hard drive and reloaded windows xp and it had the same problem.

I think it may be too old as another computer (formatted and reload windows xp at the same time) worked!

I will recommend whole new computer!!!!!

Anyway thanks for your help....we learnt a few things along the way.

Take Care and shall talk again soon (I just know it)

Have uninstalled Internet  Exlporer 8.

Ran Dial a fix again.

I just tried to install a game (it uses windows installer package) and it worked fine.

I still cant install Solarfire (which uses windows installer package).

I double clicked on 2 other files on the Solarfire disk (they were applications) called instmsia and instmsiw.
Error message said "Wrong OS or OS version for application"

Is this any help????

It cant seem to identify internet explorer 8 (i got this during an update i did while you were away)
It  kept coming up with errors so I cancelled it.

I cant install a software Astrology Program called SolarFire. It loads fine on my computer but not my friends. We have the same windows OS.

It all started before updates, uniblue registry booster or anything was installed...

We tried to fix it by updating and using uniblue........

I am from Australia so this is why it takes a while to get back to you... (time difference)

Thanks

Hi there.
Please ignore my above message....must have been half asleep.

I ended up downloading Dial-a-fix from another website and it was complete. And I saved the fix.reg file in NotePad (I had originally saved it in Wordpad)

ANYWAY, I did all you suggested and it all went through successfully but I still get the same error message when opening firewall.........

Hi there.

Firstly I saved contents of the Code Box as Rtf file type cos there was no "All Files" option (is this still ok?).

Next I had problems with opening Dial-A-Fix.

When I opened the zipped file this is the error message...."Unexpected end of archive"
And when I clicked on the Dial-a-fix.exe file there was another error message "the archive is either missing or damaged. Cannot execute Dial-A-Fix.exe"

Thanks

Yes.
I opened Security through control panel.
When I click on the Windows Firewall link this error appears:
'Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection sharing service?"
I click yes and there is another error message " Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall/Internet sharing service."

I actually tried to start the service through Start/Run/ and typing services.msc
When I click on 'start' through this window I get this message ' Could not start the Security Center service on Local Computer. Error 1075. The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion.'

Thanks for your help.........

Cannot install from there either. Same error message."This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer package"
your not serious?
I asked you to right click on the file and give me the EXACT location of the msi file??
What are you trying to explain to me/?

Edit>>Maybe I'm not reading properly
So the directory your trying to install from is C:\?
The Exact location of the msi file is E:\SFDel6.0.20\DISK1
(My friend's computer was not connected before so I merely went by memory)
What directory are you installing from?
The whole location of the msi file

See if the other thread you posted too is related

Eg... C:\whatever.msi
Give the full name, simply right click the file and select properties to find location

I'm stepping out for a bit, I'll check back later
Hi again.
The .msi files were from 2 locations which is when I worked out the problem was particular to .msi
The first location is on a cd D:\ (I was trying to install a program) and the 2nd location was from the computer's own hard drive C:\. I forget what I was trying to run the 2nd time as it was during my many attempts to solve the problem using the command prompt..
Thanks

Tech Clinic / Unable to install anything which uses MSI files

Hi There.

I have exactly the same problem.....ie; "unable to install anything that uses msi files".

I know you solved it by "It was a space in the pathname - never been a problem before but apparently it is now."

But where do i find the pathname ????? Is it in the registry somewhere?

Please help me if you can remember...

Thanks

Hi there.

My friend's computer had loads of issues so we decided to format the hard drive and load windows xp SP3.

All is ok except for 2 things;
1. We cannot install any programs...any .msi install package comes up with the error "This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer package" error 1619.

2. We can't open Security or Firewall features in Control Panel.

I have done loads of research and have come to a halt as nothing seems to fix the problems.

I have done a validation check through microsoft.com and the OS shows up as 'genuine'. I just think something went wrong during installation and a file is missing or something.

Please help.

Hi there.
Since swapping our internet provider, we cannot use our laptop using a wireless connection with our landline computer.
We have done the settings numerous times and the wireless icon shows its connected but we cannot view the Internet Explorer page (Or Mozilla) which means we cannot browse the net. It has actually downloaded updates to AVG so we know the connection is valid.
What do we check, renew, reload, delete, or mainly fix the problem?
We have restarted both computers, wireless connection, removed earlier details and refreshed data etc
Please help
Liz

Hi there.

When the computer crashes it just turns off. I need to restart by turning the power off at the wall and back on again.

I have unticked 'Automatically restart" as suggested.

Will post again when it crashes again.

Thanks
