If the school is small, you mite try asking the Network admin
for a power users account with a bit more control over the
desk top,  (S)he may let you have more control !
Maybe ask for a roaming account also,
this account will follow you as you logon to the network !
Your going to have to prove you need this kind of account
if you get it, so be smart Turbo !

Software / win xp and sp1 upgrade

I would make a new bootable XP cd with SP1 slipstreamed.
This is what i have done,
or you can just slipstream SP1 and dont make it bootable.
The use the slipsteamed XP to Upgrade your running
install of XP you have now,
