Hi, I haven't heard back from you in quite a while and now I see your site is getting spam too. Watching Task Manager and trying to click around in it while things are jumping around is not solving my problem.

You've always been very helpful in the past, but lately, it seems like there is no help available. My original post is from almost a month ago and I'm still having real problems. If you're not able to help, all you have to do is say so. I'm considering posting my trouble on another site, if I can't get you to help. If you're busy doing other things and can't help, maybe you would consider suggesting an alternative site that I can use.

I'm a bit frustrated trying to go to Task Manager while the hard drive is running. So far, with no programs running and the hard drive running,  I seen Avguard.exe and SynTPLpr.exe using resources and tried End Process, but didn't see any difference. While watching Processes Tab, hard drive is running, something is accessing the internet and nothing except System Idle is showing that it's running.

Under CPU, see which is jumping up the most if the CPU Useage is spiking all the time

That usage is not consistent as far as being at 40% all the time, but it consistently spikes to 40% even with no programs running and the hard drive runs for up to 20 minutes with no programs running.

I'll keep looking at Task Manager. From what you've seen so far, are there any virus type problems?

I've always suspected Outlook because I see it's syncronizing folders quite a bit. Last time I contacted you, I found a utility that cleans up the .pst folder and it made a huge difference. But eventually the problem came back and the clean up utility had less effect.

Ok, I'll try that but I have a question. Whatever is making the hard drive run, it does not run all the time. Should I try the above Task Manager test while I'm having the problem and the hard drive is running or at any time? BTW, I've been watching the Task Manager to see if I could get a clue. I don't know if this helps, but at times the CPU usage goes up to 40% usage even though nothing is running and under the Processes tab, everything is at 0 except System Idle Process which is at 98%.

Hi, this is the same problem you have helped me with several times in the past. Something is running in the background which slows down the computer. Even with no programs open the hard drive is running. If I boot into Safe Mode everything runs very fast. Thanks in advance.

Thanks, I was able to figure this one out on my own. Maybe what I found out can help you too. If you recall, I  originally suspected Outlook was part of my overall problem with the hard drive running all the time. Although your help made my computer run faster, there was still something running at times. Then Outlook crashed and wouldn't open at all and I found out that the my profile became corrupted and that's why the program wouldn't open. When I created a new profile Outlook opened. After half of the day yesterday reading support items, I eventually found an Inbox cleaning tool that is located within Outlook. It scanned the data file and fixed the errors. Immediately after running it, I noticed that my hard drive went quiet and everything was running way faster. That made a huge difference in performance. Here's the link, hope it helps

I finally got around to doing these last instructions.  There was also an update for Java which I ran.

I had to get a new computer a couple of months ago because this one became unstable, so fixing this one was not a top priority. I'd still like to get it working again.

I have a new problem now with Outlook crashing and not willing to open. Is that something you can help with? Should I start a new thread for that?

Brief discription. Outlook encounters an error when trying to open. Message says it will open in Safe Mode. When I click ok, it encounters another error and offers to do Detect and Repair. After I run that, it  says there are no problems found.

After running Combo Fix, everything seems to be running faster. I haven't seen the 'background' program running, but I haven't used this computer very much yet. I noticed that g2mdlhlpx.exe was removed, maybe that was it.

Ran TFC and it removed 64 mb

Malwarebytes give error when I click on "Check for Updates" Error 732 contact support team.

I've tried running GMER in Safe Mode several times. It starts, it scans for quite a while, then the computer locks up and I have to reboot. No log is produced that I can tell.

I'm not having any luck with GMER. The first time I ran it, the computer rebooted on it's own after I started the scan. The next 2 times I ran it, after scanning for a bit it locked up at \Device\0000009b. The entire computer was locked up and I had to restart it.

Please advise.

Sorry if I sound thick. Here's the part I'm not clear on. One of the next steps on that link says:

"If not, repeat the process for each of the Process Win.ini File, Load Startup Items and Load System Services check boxes in turn, until the problem does re-appear occurs. The last item that you selected will be the source of the problem and therefore the subject of further investigation."

Re the part in bold, how would I know if the problem reappeared? I never know when the background program is going to run and I can't make it run on command. When would I know to check the next box in turn?

While in safe mode with networking I followed the first couple of steps and changed the General and Services tabs per the instructions, under msconfig then rebooted. Upon reboot the "background" program began running immediately. When I looked at the tabs under msconfig again, the Load System Services and the Load Start Up Items check boxes are checked in gray. I unchecked Load Start Up items. Under the Services tab, some are checked and some arent.

I'm not clear if I should proceed with the rest of the instructions right now and uncheck Load Syetem Services, etc. and reboot again. How would I tell if the problem still existed? I have no idea when the background program is going to run again and it looks like its done for tonight.

FYI, I kind of have that program that's running in the background trapped right now because I'm using the computer in Safe Mode. It's my only choice when I have to work. So if I reboot right now into normal start up, the background program will run for about 20 minutes and nothing else will work.

Will I be able to run the above while in Safe Mode? Or should I reboot into normal mode and run it? Also, is there any way we can tell what the program is while it's running? Right now, I can get it to start at anytime by rebooting into normal mode.
