Software / Slipstreaming Hotfixes
« on: August 19, 2003, 07:03:59 PM »
I think he's talking about doing this. It's quite involved. I spent some time automating the process and compressing the files like the originals in the i368 folder are as this makes it easy to overwrite them without having to search and delete the old ones. I posted a detailed guide in another forum that deals with bootable cds, and asked for comments or improvements but no-one bothered, but it works for me  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />

Software / Start menu item won't go
« on: August 17, 2003, 06:40:30 AM »
This is a first, for me anyway. I installed a zoom adsl modem and it added it's folder to start menu > all programs as usual. I moved this into another folder I have called 'system' within all programs. All well and good. Except everytime I reboot or start the computer, it reapears on the root of all programs, no matter how many times I delete it.

I just find this really annoying that zoom can be so arrogant as to think that they know best how to organize my computer. Does anyone know of a way to stop this please?

Software / $oem$ $1 $$
« on: June 22, 2003, 09:35:41 AM »
This has been bugging me for ages. I just can't seem to get it clear in my mind. If anyone can help that would be great. I'll try and be clear.

I want an xp cd with intergrated hotfixes. I understand how to get most of them to work by using the svcpack directory in i386 on the cd and using a svcpack.inf file etc. I've done that and it works.

I now want to install the other type of hotfixes for ie6 etc that don't work this way.

From all I've read, I understand you need a $oem$ directory at the ROOT of the cd. I've also read that you need a $1 folder inside $oem$ with the hotfixes in. Elsewhere I've read you need a $$ folder inside $oem$ with the hotfixes in. It's all a bit confusing.

I've read that the files get copied to the hard drive. but do they get installed as well? If so, do the files get deleted from the hard drive afterwards or are they sitting there taking up space and needing to be deleted after the setup?

If anyone who's done this can just clear this up that would be very nice!

Software / XP home -- intergrating non 'Q' hotfixes
« on: June 18, 2003, 07:48:53 AM »
Most hotfixes seem to be the q123456.exe type (with the plain white and blue icon) which can be intergrated into a cd no problem. How do you intergrate the others that are for java. ie patches. directx etc (with the 'setup' icon)?

I've read all sorts of sources that explain things like making a $oem$ folder with a $1 or some say $$ folder inside it, but I've never manged to get it to work.

Can anyone explain how to do this?
Many thanks.

Software / Make your own windows PE
« on: June 01, 2003, 01:25:22 PM »
Found out that the problem is with the STARTNET.CMD file.

I have these lines in it:

regsvr32 /s netcfgx.dll
factory -minint
netcfg -v -winpe
net start dhcp
net start nla
a:\floppy.cmd

@gosh
Did you put any of these in or are they the standard settings?

If anyone can explain to this newbie what they are for and whether any are necessary, I would be pleased. I deleted the lot and the CD seemed to boot fine. There was no XP splash screen so I assume one of these commands is for that. I would have thought the 2nd one. I can't understand the last line which seemes to want to read a file from a floppy.

Many thanks.

Software / Make your own windows PE

Gosh,
Any idea how to get rid of that error message or to disable network trying to load? My xp home sp1 cd is oem by the way.
Thanks.

At the end of building the winpe directory, the command prompt displays:

1097 files were copied from 1113 files
failed to copy all the required files for winPE

I assume this is because I'm using home edition. Is this the reason for my failed to install network adapter check winbom error do you think? Would these be mainly network files that are missing?

I got it to work in the end but when it loads I get this message:

failed to install network adapter check winbom

Any idea how I can get rid of that? I don't need a network.

Also, when building the temp folder, are any settings taken from the installation you're working from? Any reg settings etc?

Software / Any sites for WindowsPE ?
« on: May 31, 2003, 06:48:56 AM »
@gosh

Microsoft asked bart to remove pe builder from his site as it contained copyrighted files.

But putting that aside, are you saying that you can make a winPE type disc like bart's program does, without a copy of winPE?

UPDATE:

it's OK, I've just seen your other post about this.

Software / XP keeps forgetting things
« on: May 29, 2003, 12:50:07 PM »
A while ago, my XP install kept forgetting things. For instance, if I pluged my DV camcorder in, a box would come up with a suggestion as to which program to open, or you can choose to not open a program and not get asked again. Well, you check the box about not being reminded but if you unpluged the camera and pluged it in again, you got the same thing again.
The other strange thing is that it kept accessing the floppy drive at the welcome screen.

I re-installed XP recently and all was OK. now, for no reason I can think of, both those problems have started again. I haven't even installed any apps that I can think of that would do this.

Does anyone have any ideas or know of any microsoft articles about it? I can't find any, but I'm not sure what words to search for.
Many thanks.

Software / $OEM$ folder, where??
« on: May 16, 2003, 11:27:58 AM »
I keep re-visiting this $OEM$ business thinking I'll get it right if I really read about it, but end up giving up. I can't get anything to copy or install from this folder at all. I wanted to install the intel chipset inf install files for my motherboard, but even the documentation that was supplied from intel on how to add this to the $OEM$ folder gets so far then gives wrong information about what files are inside it's own extracted folders. I've tried to pre-install directX9 and nothing happened. A lot of advice given -- even on forums like these -- presume you know a fair bit to start with.

I've managed to work out how to pre-install hotfixes but that's it. I haven't had any answers as to how to add hotfixes that aren't the 'Q' one's if you know what I mean. It would be good to have a step-by-step guide as to how to pre-install things from an $OEM$ folder on a CD. When to use the $1 or $$ folders. It would be good to know whether this will work with home and oem versions also.

But why should I or anyone else expect someone to spend time doing this?

It is frustrating though.
