Software / Unwanted shortcuts in start menu

when i open the start menu above the "progams" entry, (where the windows update is) i have a bunch of entries like cookies (which show all the cookies) and desktop (which shows all the junk i have in my desktop). they are shown as menus and submenus. they are just some of the entries in that are the dir. C:\Documents and Settings\user not all the files show up.
If i just try to delete them, itll delete the file or folder and send it to the recycle bin. i dont know what caused this it just happened one day. can someone help.
