Software / Slipstreaming Hotfixes
« on: October 12, 2003, 09:07:07 PM »
I am just beginning to learn about slipstreaming and hot fixes but one concern I has was a question about the service packs.  I have a oem win2k install cd and it appearently has no service packs on it.  I would like to slipstream to sp4, but I am uncertain if I need to first slipstream 1,2,and 3. I am guessing no. I can just install service pack 4.

Next concern is how can I test and see that what I have done actually works.

Pondering this second question has lead me to this possible solution.

Install a virtual PC such as virtual pc 5.2 under my current win2kpro installation and then using a virtual harddisk image. I install my slipstreamed test cd to this virtual pc.  I think I can use a virtual cd to install a test image to the virtual hard disk and wipe the hard disk and reinstall over and over to both quickly and easily test and retest untill I have it right.  Then burn the best results to a real cd-rw so than in the future as hotfixes are added I can add them to the cd-rw, after testing of course on the virtual pc.  Yes I do understand that the virtual pc, the virtual hard disk and the virtual cd will require a whole lot of space, but I have 410 gigs of storage and 768 megs of memory so it should not be a problem.

I have tested this in virtual pc 5.2 under win2k pro, by creating a win98SE image and copying it to a virtual hard disk and installing win98SE sucessfully. The documentation says you can install and run both win2k and winxp this way but I have only tested win98SE at this point.

Opinions? Ideas? welcome
