Thanks for the reply mate. I've decided to cut my losses and remove NAV completely. Somebody recommended a free virus scanner called AVG from...

which I installed and am very happy with, it includes free virus def. updates and the option to upgrade to a full commercial version if required. It actually found 6 viruses that NAV missed!!

Tech Clinic / (yet another) WinXP problem

Here's a problem that is driving me mad and I can't find any reference to it on Microsoft's Knowledge Base or any of the dozen or so Tech. sites that I've searched.

I have had Norton Systemworks 2003 installed for about 6 months now with no problems, until about a week ago.

Clicking on the NSW icon brings up the program window for about 2 seconds then it closes down again. I can run the individual utilities from their own icons but the Integrator refuses to run.

The other problem, which is more serious, is that Norton AntiVirus does the same thing, so, although it loads and sits in memory monitoring my system, I can't run LiveUpdate to update my virus defs. LiveUpdate stays in memory but there's no way of getting to the update window, it just sits there doing nothing.

I've tried uninstalling (no mean feat with Norton) and re-installing several times with no improvement. I've tried clean booting. I've upgraded to the latest version of LiveUpdate, and I've also tried Norton AntiVirus 2004 and nothing makes any difference.

I've scanned the whole system for viruses scanning from my second computer on my network, and I've scanned for malicious adware using SpyBot and AdAware, still no change.

I wonder if any recently installed software has damaged a system file somewhere or sneaked a registry entry in where it's causing these programs to quit. Just in case it's relevant, WinTasks does the same thing, ie. quits as soon as it starts.

Sorry if this is a bit long winded but I wanted to give as much info as possible, does anyone out there have any idea what the problem could be or has anyone experienced a similar problem with WinXP?
