Tech Clinic / newbie xp problem

I am new to xp and have the following:
I cannot see all of my programs wnen I click the "All Programs" This may seem simple: but, it's bugging me.
Also, recently when I log on and surf, I can go one place and do one thing and then everything times out and I have to log off and relogon to do anything else.
Ant ideas or advise would be appreciated.
