Alt-OS / installation problem
« on: January 02, 2003, 03:56:59 PM »
hi guys.... i think i really need help here http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' />

that i got no idea what's wrong when i install SuSE Linux or RedHat on my other computer...

it keeps showing \"partition checks\", and get stuck there whenever i try to install it from the cd.
i have tried a \"safe mode installation\", \"text-mode\", or whatever, i always ended up stuck at that checking forever.

i currently have 3 harddisks on this new computer, and 2 harddisks on the RAID controller card, i thought it was the raid card causing problem, but
even i unplugged it(raid card and harddisks), the linux installation would still get stuck there...

the funny thing is that i've tried on both suse and redhat linux, and they all freeze at \"partition checking\" http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' />

i want to make my old windows harddisk C to be the master bootable,
and install linux on slave drive (it's a new harddisk!! and i didnt partition it), and let it dual boot when booting up.

does anyone get an idea why linux would get stuck at partition checking? http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' />:(http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' /> i think i've had this problem for over a week... http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':wacko:\' /> and i havent got the suse box hooked-up http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' />(..... (only on my old computer, but it sucks)

thanks guys...

As you will realize when you start using different distros of linux or unix, they all have their own way of doing things. RH handles things a little different from Mandrake etc...

They all use the same Linux Kernel, but its almost like how Win9x/ME/2k/NT/XP are all pretty similar, but things are done a little differently on all of them. I just did a RH 8.0 install and I think its beautfiul...but I still have to check out Mandrake 9.0 and see which one I like better.

I got word now that the consoles are in fact going to drop. Apparently it was just posted online a lil premature...according to a friend, some EBs are already matching this price....Still no 1st person experience w/ this though.

Alt-OS / BeOs
« on: November 22, 2002, 09:36:22 AM »
Yes. It was a very clean simple OS from a while back. They were bought by Palm Inc. about 2 years ago I guess and AFAIK don't have the OS up for dl anymore.....I am sure you can get it other places though. They had 2 versions of the OS, first one was free and ran \"inside\" windows kind of like VMWare does things, but you had to boot to it from windows and then you had to totally reboot to get back to windows...the 2nd version was the $50 version that was standalone....

The free version had a limited total system size of 512MB so you were kind of limited. I do know of several projects that are building on the advances of BeOS as it had some very well developed ideas in regards to the OS.

                    Your dl shouldn't totally affect my speed on dling the webpage as its uses your ul speed when sending me the page.....which may just be really slow.

Alt-OS / Which video card?
« on: November 20, 2002, 09:16:21 AM »
JT, you shouldnt need to recompile the kernel to have that nvidia card work....

DL files from here

To install from tar file, unpack each file:

 $ tar xvzf NVIDIA_kernel.tar.gz
 $ tar xvzf NVIDIA_GLX.tar.gz

cd into the NVIDIA_kernel directory. Type 'make install'. This will
compile the kernel interface to the NVdriver, link the NVdriver, copy
the NVdriver into place, and attempt to insert the NVdriver into the
running kernel:

 $ cd NVIDIA_kernel
 $ make install

Next, move into the NVIDIA_GLX directory. Type 'make install' -- this
will copy the needed OpenGL and XFree86 files into place:

 $ cd ../NVIDIA_GLX
 $ make install

Note that the \"make install\" for each package will remove any previously
installed NVIDIA drivers.

........

If you already have an XF86Config file working with a different driver
(such as the 'nv' or 'vesa' driver), then all you need to do is find
the relevant Device section and replace the line:

 Driver \"nv\"
 (or Driver \"vesa\")

with

 Driver \"nvidia\"

In the Module section, make sure you have:

 Load \"glx\"

You should also remove the following lines:

 Load \"dri\"
 Load \"GLcore\"

http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86_40/1.0-3123/README

Here is your reply....its probably because there are 3-5 active members in this forum at this time and none of us are really graphic artists.....and offering a picture of your dog is a kind of odd thing.....
