Tech Clinic / Accessing My Docs Remotely

Can anyone help?
I am trying to access "My Documents" folder on my Desktop PC from my laptop via a wireless router but can't find a way to do it other than sharing the folder with other users (i.e. my son has a laptop linked into the home network accessing the net).
I have been to the security tab (in Safe mode) and tried to set permisssion there but it only sees the users on the Desktop.
Is there a way to give permission to myself only on my laptop via the wireless router?
I am not a complete novice but am delving into unknown territory here!
